Instead of focusing on punishment, our system should focus on rehabilitation. This book argues that reducing recidivism is possible through education availability, rehabilitation and cognitive behavioral therapy, employment programs, reentry initiatives, faith-based instruction, along with social capital provided by family and friends.
Download or read book Brokering Access written by Mike Larsen and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the business of public officials any of the public’s business? Most Canadians would argue that it is – that we citizens are entitled to enquire and get answers about our government’s actions. Yet, on a practical level, there still exists a struggle between the public’s quest for accountability and the government’s culture of secrecy. Drawing together the unique perspectives of social scientists, journalists, and access to information (ATI) advocates, Brokering Access explores the history of ATI law and supplies multiple examples of its contemporary application at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels. From restrictions to access of airport security data post-9/11 to censorship under the Access to Information Act to the difficulties of obtaining details on streetscape video surveillance, this book reveals the legal and bureaucratic obstacles citizens face when trying to access government information.

Download or read book Also Serving Time written by Rosemary Ricciardelli and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Also Serving Time informs readers about the realities of provincial and territorial prison work in Canada. Exploring the nuances of the job, Rosemary Ricciardelli shows how officer orientations and attitudes toward prisoners are interconnected and foundational in shaping their prison experiences as well as that of those in custody and in managerial and administrative positions. Drawing on interviews with 100 correctional officers from a range of provincial prisons and with experience working in territorial prisons, Ricciardelli provides theoretical and applied explorations of officer orientations, interpretations, and risk propensity to show how perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs--both at the individual and structural levels--shape prison practices. Also Serving Time unpacks how gender informs the actions and self-presentation of correctional officers and informs readers about the officers' experiences when working with male and female adult prison populations. Ricciardelli confirms that tasks of daily living underpinned by pervasive risk potential shape prison work. Through the officer accounts presented, she provides an opportunity for readers to explore how punishment and 'rehabilitation', gender, and the hierarchical structure of prison management shape officers' daily realities.
Download or read book Prison Librarianship Policy and Practice written by Suzanna Conrad and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prisoners are in a grey area regarding library services. Prison libraries violate many tenets of librarianship, with the justification of maintaining order. The field is de-professionalized--many positions are filled by persons without degrees in library science, and corrections administrators often write policy for services. Critics cite the need to implement public library service models despite practical difficulties. This book investigates state, national and international policies on prison libraries, reviews literature on the topic and describes partnerships between prisons and public libraries. Results from a national survey and follow-up interviews are included, providing a full narrative of policy outcomes in U.S. prisons.
