Book Departing Radically in Academic Writing

Download or read book Departing Radically in Academic Writing written by Elizabeth Mackinlay and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Departing Radically in Academic Writing (DRAW) seeks to show qualitative researchers that there are ways to embrace creatively alternative approaches to writing, whilst fulfilling the demands of an academic tenure system. Putting forward playful, arts-based and creative writing/fiction approaches to writing up research, the contributions in this book demonstrate how theorisation can happen in different ways, particularly, for younger career scholars struggling with their thesis submissions. Some of the contributions in the book come from those who have successfully defended a "DRAWn" thesis. Whilst this is not a handbook or "how to", it does show DRAW and radical departure work can work in practice without disadvantaging the researcher. Each chapter includes Author's Notes on the chapter and Radical Writing Prompts to stimulate creative thinking. Drawing on the work of Sara Ahmed, Ruth Behar, bell hooks, Helene Cixous, Virginia Woolf, Laurel Richardson and other literary and creative feminist, qualitative thinkers, Departing Radically in Academic Writing will appeal to graduate students and researchers in Education, the social sciences and humanities who are interested to advance critical thinking through radically departured work.

Book Departing from Deviance

Download or read book Departing from Deviance written by Henry L. Minton and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The struggle to remove the stigma of sickness surrounding same-sex love has a long history. In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its diagnostic classification of mental illness, but the groundwork for this pivotal decision was laid decades earlier. In this new study, Henry L. Minton looks back at the struggle of the American gay and lesbian activists who chose scientific research as a path for advancing homosexual rights. He traces the history of gay and lesbian emancipatory research from its early beginnings in the late nineteenth century to its role in challenging the illness model in the 1970s. By examining archival sources and unpublished manuscripts, Minton reveals the substantial accomplishments made by key researchers and relates their life stories. He also considers the contributions of mainstream sexologists such as Alfred C. Kinsey and Evelyn Hooker, who supported the cause of homosexual rights through the advancement of scientific knowledge. By uncovering this hidden chapter in the story of gay liberation, Departing from Deviance makes an important contribution to both the history of science and the history of sexuality.

Book Doing Good Departing from Evil

Download or read book Doing Good Departing from Evil written by Carole J. Lambert and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing Good, Departing from Evil: Research Findings in the Twenty-First Century emphasizes that goodness must be actively enacted, not abstractly discussed, that evil is present and must be fought, and that in-depth research into problems provides wisdom to proceed with that battle in the new century. Eleven scholars investigate problematic topics and offer potential guidance about racism, propaganda, marital tensions, educational inequities, college dropouts, elders' depression, neglect of the disabled, and even peacemaking between faith-based and secular social work agencies as well as Israelis and Palestinians. This collection offers no easy answers to complex problems, but points the way to potentially positive modes of mending the world, and invites readers to share in this challenging task.

But all's not well in vibrant Camden Town, as Kennedy investigates a death just outside a diplomatic compound, and finds his investigation immediately stymied by the invocation of diplomatic privilege. The deceased, an actress of a different sort, hostess and social media influencer Gabriella Byrne, left behind a world of mystery, where even those who knew her best did not know her well. As Kennedy interviews witnesses and checks alibis, his investigation brings him from London's hallowed palaces of power to seamy gentlemen's clubs, each with smoke and mirrors of their own. Along the way, he discovers just how far some people will go to protect their darkest secrets, in this, the 11th DI Christy Kennedy mystery. "Well-crafted, sensitive, literate, sharply observed...deeply enjoyable."--Kirkus Reviews.

Book excerpt: “[A] quiet, powerful novel” of a young woman caught in the chaos of Argentina in the mid-1970s, when speaking against the government could mean death (Publishers Weekly). March 23, 1976. Berta watches horrified as her lover, a union organizer named Atilio, is thrown from a window to his death by soldiers. The next day, Colonel Jorge Rafael Videla stages a coup d’état and a military dictatorship takes control of Argentina. And even though she was never a part of Atilio’s union efforts, Berta is on a list to be “disappeared.” Fleeing to relatives in the countryside, she becomes part of the family she knows only from old photographs: Aunt Avelina, who blasts music from an old record player; Uncle Nepomuceno, who watches slugs slither in the garden every afternoon; and Uncle Javier, who sits in his tiny grocery store day and night. But soon enough, Berta realizes she must run even further to save her life—and those she has come to love. With a prose that is light yet penetrating, Gloria Lisé has written “a beautifully simple, poetic story of solidarity and love, with memorable characters painted in the tender strokes of a watercolor” (Luisa Valenzuela, author of Black Novel with Argentines).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have described the development of a new micro-payment system, NetPay, f- turing different ways of managing electronic money, or e-coins. NetPay provides an off-line, anonymous protocol that supports high-volume, low-cost electronic trans- tions over the Internet. We developed three kinds of e-wallets to manage coins in a NetPay-based system: a sever-side e-wallet allowing multiple computer access to- coins; a client-side e-wallet allowing customer PC management of the e-coins, and a cookie-based e-wallet cache to improve performance of the client-side e-wallet c- munication overhead. Experiences to date with NetPay prototypes have demonstrated it provides an effective micro-payment strategy and customers welcome the ability to manage their electronic coins in different ways. Book Departing from Tradition

Download or read book Departing from Tradition written by Jay Bidal and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English language teaching methods and language learning styles have changed dramatically over the past decade in Asia and the surrounding regions. Huge efforts are being made by teachers from the K-12 system, as well as at the tertiary level, to move away from the traditional Grammar-Translation Method towards more communicative approaches to teaching and learning, including the use of project – and task-based learning and technology-enhanced language learning, just to name a few of the more frequently used methodologies. In this book, the authors shed light on the changes in ELT in Asia and the region over the past 10 years or so as seen in the wider context of language policy, which puts greater value on the acquisition of English and the new directions in learner-centered classrooms which encourage student autonomy and voice and place students as active decision-makers in the learning process. With the title of “Departing from Tradition: Innovations in English Language Teaching and Learning”, this book showcases some of the innovations in ELT that are currently happening in this rapidly growing field. Given the growing importance of English and the enormous energy and enthusiasm in the region for learning the language in both formal and informal contexts, ELT will continue to flourish. This volume will offer insights into the tremendous changes that have been made in secondary and university English language classrooms across the region.

Book Departing Tong Shaan The Organization and Operation of Cantonese Overseas Emigration to America 1850 1900

Download or read book Departing Tong Shaan The Organization and Operation of Cantonese Overseas Emigration to America 1850 1900 written by Douglas W. Lee, PhD and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Later nineteenth-century large-scale Chinese overseas emigration to America is generally well-known, where masses of poor desperate Chinese people (mostly young men) left home in Southern China to seek economic opportunities in America and elsewhere. Despite this fact, it has long been a mystery why both research specialists and interested readers alike have seldom, if ever, asked such critically important questions such as: If later nineteenth-century Chinese emigrants were so poor and desperate... then “How did they know where to go? How did they arrange to get there and back? and perhaps most importantly, How did they pay for their long journey?” This book is the fourth volume of the new series, entitled The Gum-Shaan Chronicles: The Early History of Cantonese-Chinese America, 1850-1900. It is the first scholarly work to examine “the nuts and bolts” of the complex technical process orchestrating Cantonese Chinese overseas emigration. It examines in detail the various financial, technological, logistical, demographic, geographical, political-economy, and historical constructs supporting and guiding later nineteenth-century Cantonese overseas emigration from British Hong Kong to America. About the Author Douglas W. Lee, PhD is a second-generation Cantonese-Chinese American, trained as a historian of Modern China, with a special research interest in early Chinese American History. He earned a BA at Lewis and Clark College, Portland, Oregon (1967); an MA at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1969); a PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1979); and JD from Lewis and Clark Law School, Portland, Oregon (1988). In 1979-1980, Lee was the cofounder and first national President of the National Association for Asian American Studies. In 1981, he was cofounder of the Chinese Historical Society of the Pacific Northwest, and the first editor of its journal, The Annals of the Chinese Historical Society of the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Washington). This book is the result of forty-five years of research and writing.
