Book excerpt: Deolali was mesmerised by two exceptionally handsome young guys who rode in one fine day on their mean chugging machine. They were fresh recruits to be trained by Dad. Their sole ambition was to migrate to London for most Brits were heading home as the Empire’s rule was about to end. And the matrimonial route was not ruled out possibly via Col Browns toothy daughters! It was a period of migrations – the Muslims to a new nation being carved out for them, sometimes leaving behind loved and unloved ones; the white man to his homeland, not without trepidation at the impending loss of luxury and an influx of refugees to various parts of India, armed with their grit and dreams to succeed again. In all this melee, Deolali Days has a lot of comic characters who willy-nilly get involved with each other. To top it all, a dazzling yet intimidating woman entrepreneur, seemingly from a royal background, is ready to seize the moment. But adding the most colour is Poppat baba, a parrot whose predictions are mysteriously correct to the dot, driving the heroes nuts! Who is who in this utter chaotic confusion? What happens to them? Deolali Days is a bubbling narrative of those magical times.

Book An Odyssey In War And Peace

Download or read book An Odyssey In War And Peace written by Lt. Gen J.F.R. Jacob and published by Roli Books Private Limited. This book was released on 2011-01-31 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jews who have made India their home have flourished without adverse discrimination. Of this, the Baghdadi Sephardic community is very small in number but has produced one of India's greatest contemporary soldiers, Lt Gen. Jack Jacob. This is his fascinating story. As a small boy, Jacob, who was from a business family, was sent to a residential public school in Darjeeling along with his two brothers. When the Second World War broke out, Jacob without informing his family joined the army in 1941 to fight against the Nazis! After Independence, Gen. Jacob became a gunnery instructor for some time and subsequently was trained in an advanced Artillery and Missile course at Fort Sill in the US. A quick learner, he commanded infantry and artillery brigades, headed the artillery school, and finally the Eastern Army. Rubbing shoulders with some of the stalwarts who strode the Indian political and military arena in those times, Gen. Jacob sometimes fell foul of his bosses and twice came close to resigning. But he stuck on and the pinnacle of his career came in 1971, when he planned and oversaw operations leading to the fall of Dacca and obtained an unconditional public surrender, the only one in history, of Gen. Niazi and his army of 93,000. Written lucidly, this autobiography comes to life as a historical document recapitulating some of the most important events of the 1960s to the 90s - from the defeat of the Naxalites in West Bengal, to the problems of Nagaland and Sikkim and the politics of Goa and Punjab. This is not only the story of the life of one great soldier, but provides glimpses of some of the most influential and colourful personalities who wrote the history of those tumultuous times.

Book Jack of All Trades

Download or read book Jack of All Trades written by Peter Inchbald and published by Guy Inchbald. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into privilege, Peter Inchbald was an intellectual who spent the latter part of World War II as an Army Captain and the sole white man for miles around in the foothills of the Karakorums and the Himalaya. He became a minor artist of the postwar era before becoming an equally minor industrialist who helped bring modern design to the silverware and cutlery trade. Later in life he published a series of detective stories. There are really three books in here. The first is a personal memoir, the second a family history - an Appendix provides several family trees. The third is a serious record, full of fascinating historical detail. Inchbald wrote his memoir for many kinds of reader, from those who knew him intimately to distant cousins who had never heard of him and people, some not yet born, to whom he is a dim figure from the past.

Book My Darling Wife Or How I Passed the Time of Day Between 18th April 1940 and 5th November 1945

Download or read book My Darling Wife Or How I Passed the Time of Day Between 18th April 1940 and 5th November 1945 written by Harry Berry and published by Authors On Line Ltd. This book was released on 2004 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed account, told mainly in the form of the true letters and dairy notes of one young man s experience of World War II from the day he was called up to the day he returned home almost five years later. There are no heroics, no sex, and any drama is hidden between the lines. The letters to his wife, Gwen, are matter-of-fact, at times almost naive, but often with a touch of humour. They were written in uncomfortable and sometimes primitive conditions from barrack rooms in England, India and Malaya, from the crowded decks of troopships and as censored postcards and letters from Japanese POW Camps in Singapore, Taiwan and Japan. They appear exactly as written. Nothing added, nothing taken away. Parts of the Diary and other notes written during the first 19 months of captivity were confiscated by the Imperial Japanese Army in Tokyo. The remainder were hidden and brought safely home. Harry Berry's wife Gwen, never gave up hope even though it was 18 months from the fall of Singapore before she received news of her husband. She kept all his letters, without which this small insignificant slice of 20th century history would never have been preserved for posterity! "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a soldier without a gun. It is personal, yet universal. It is the story of what is left behind when the battles have been fought and the war has moved on. To the Australian Army, Private Lawrence Nicholas Kennedy was NX21854, a soldier who served for 1907 days with the 2/4th Australian Army Field Ambulance in Australia, the Middle East, the Kokoda Track and New Guinea during World War II. With older brother, Bill by his side, the Kennedy boys experienced the adventure and the joy, the loss and the despair of war – like too many others before and since. To those who knew Nick Kennedy after the war, he was a dedicated and professional psychiatric nurse. To the author, he was her gentle Uncle Nick, remembered as a kind, funny and generous man who seemed older than his years. The small diary he kept during World War II helped her understand why that was so. Kennedy’s words and photographs tell the harrowing and compelling story of one young man who went to war – not to kill the enemy, but to save his fellow soldiers – only to return home forever changed by the challenges, hardships and tragedy he experienced. All the Broken Soldiers provides a rare insight into an aspect of war fought by soldiers equipped with little more than a basic medical kit and a Red Cross armband … those who cared for the broken soldiers that war leaves behind.
