Book Inside Job

Download or read book Inside Job written by Tom Orent and published by . This book was released on 2012-06-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I've been to the dentist several times, so I know the drill. Author unknown Over the years, dentistry has changed and so has technology. As we move deeper into the new technological age, we learn how to better care our 'pearly whites' so they will serve us for a lifetime. One thing that we do know is that it's impossible to put a value on a smile. When compared with yesteryear, the utilization of modernday dental technology (including the use of lasers, digital applications, sedation techniques and other treatments unknown even ten years ago), makes a visit to the dentist a far more pleasant experience today. As dentists have learned more and more about the chemistry and physics of the mouth and jaws, they advise and teach us the care and preventive techniques that we need in order to keep our teeth for a lifetime. The Celebrity Expert Dentists in this book draw our attention not only to the health of our gums and teeth, but as importantly, to their relationship with our overall physical and mental health. A correlation between dental health and good general health has now been well-established. Regardless of age or activity- level, the Celebrity Expert Dentists in this book would like to share with you the importance of their dental specialties and experience. Much of this knowledge will be a revelation. It could change your life for the better....And remember that a great smile is indicative of a great Inside Job. A smile is a curve that sets everything straight. Phyllis Diller

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incisive and startling international review of the evolution of dentistry from the Bronze Age to the present day, presented in a gorgeous package This achingly fascinating book follows the evolution of dentistry throughout the world from the Bronze Age to the present day, featuring captivating, grim illustrations of the tools and techniques of dentistry through the ages. It charts the changing social attitudes toward the purpose and practice of dentistry from the crude and painful endeavors of early civilizations to the fluoridated water, cosmetic surgery, and heightened expectations of today. Organized chronologically, The Smile Stealers interleaves beautiful and gruesome 3D objects, technical illustrations, and paintings from the Wellcome Collection’s unique medical archive of material from Europe, America, and the Far East with seven authoritative and eloquent themed articles from medical historian Richard Barnett. Including previously unseen illustrations, this comprehensive review of the development of the trade and discipline of dentistry covers topics as diverse as the very first dentures, the smile revolution in eighteenth-century portraiture, and the role of dentistry in forensic science. The Smile Stealers is guaranteed to appeal to those who see the beauty in medicine and biology as it probes the growth of dentistry.

Download or read book Teeth written by Mary Otto and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of 2017 "[Teeth is] . . . more than an exploration of a two-tiered system—it is a call for sweeping, radical change." —New York Times Book Review "Show me your teeth," the great naturalist Georges Cuvier is credited with saying, "and I will tell you who you are." In this shattering new work, veteran health journalist Mary Otto looks inside America's mouth, revealing unsettling truths about our unequal society. Teeth takes readers on a disturbing journey into America's silent epidemic of oral disease, exposing the hidden connections between tooth decay and stunted job prospects, low educational achievement, social mobility, and the troubling state of our public health. Otto's subjects include the pioneering dentist who made Shirley Temple and Judy Garland's teeth sparkle on the silver screen and helped create the all-American image of "pearly whites"; Deamonte Driver, the young Maryland boy whose tragic death from an abscessed tooth sparked congressional hearings; and a marketing guru who offers advice to dentists on how to push new and expensive treatments and how to keep Medicaid patients at bay. In one of its most disturbing findings, Teeth reveals that toothaches are not an occasional inconvenience, but rather a chronic reality for millions of people, including disproportionate numbers of the elderly and people of color. Many people, Otto reveals, resort to prayer to counteract the uniquely devastating effects of dental pain. Otto also goes back in time to understand the roots of our predicament in the history of dentistry, showing how it became separated from mainstream medicine, despite a century of growing evidence that oral health and general bodily health are closely related. Muckraking and paradigm-shifting, Teeth exposes for the first time the extent and meaning of our oral health crisis. It joins the small shelf of books that change the way we view society and ourselves—and will spark an urgent conversation about why our teeth matter.

Book The Most Interesting Dentist in the World

Download or read book The Most Interesting Dentist in the World written by Dds Jack Von Bulow and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So, believe it or not, this is my third book. I've written a weekly column for local rags since 1998. And prior to my early monthly spots for our local Chamber publication, I can honestly confess I never saw twenty years of published writing coming. For the last twenty years, family has remained my story, my mission, and my passion. Every day has been all about learning, growing, and doing my best to honor my family, my dental team, and every patient we serve and see as our mom, dad, brother, sister, or child. You'll notice my writing is very personal and opinionated, even though for the most part it looks at dentistry, health, and relationships from the lighter side. The book is comprised of stories I've written for our local online and hard copy newspapers. When I reread the pieces during the publishing process, it seemed like there was always a sentence or two that touched my feelings. You'll read about my team because they've become my family. You'll read about sports because those stories take me back to my mom, dad, brother, and the childhood I wouldn't trade for the world. You'll get virtual interviews with the Dalai Lama, politics, and my takes on pop culture. Sometimes the connection to health will be obvious; there are other times when you might need to use your imagination. Every day I vow to be powerful, positive, and fearless and I warn you; some days I fail and sometimes I overdo it. After practicing dentistry for over 40-years, I can still reach par-5s in two and roll the wheels off stationary bikes. But I was never that flexible and Dental Assistants Kolleen and Dani have occasionally inferred my filter has become slightly more transparent. I hope you enjoy the stories. I guess my theme is visits to the dentist can be a little scary but we're intent on listening, understanding, and being interested. We want you to feel safe and we want to help you become your own best healthcare advocate. We're on your side. We like you. We want the best for you. Why not practice effective business, healthcare, and dentistry within a culture of love, humor, and compassion?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Kourosh Maddahi, DDS has been a pioneer in Cosmetic Dentistry for close to 3 decades, and now, with his new guide to the all-new sub-field of Anti-Aging Dentistry, he's continued the trend. Dr Maddahi reveals in his first book ever; Anti-Aging Dentistry, Restoring Youth, One Smile at a Time, some of the great mysteries associated with aging in the lower 1/3 of the face, not just inside the mouth, but in the lips, cheeks, and jaw. He walks the reader through a step-by-step analysis of these largely misunderstood abnormalities that have been previously regarded as unfixable by medical or cosmetic procedures, and explains how it is expertly placed porcelain veneers and crowns that can rectify them, not injectables and facelifts. These revolutionary procedures have caught fire in the press and medical industries alike, and are now laid out for anyone to understand and gage the value of them, by the leader in the field. This clear, concise manual is just what the doctor ordered in the road to understanding what it is that changes our faces as we age, and how we can prevent or reverse what we've been told is inevitable; looking older.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As recently as fifty years ago most people expected to lose their teeth as they aged. Few children benefited from braces to straighten their teeth, and cosmetic procedures to change the appearance of smiles were largely unknown. Today, many Canadians enjoy straight, white teeth and far more of them are keeping their teeth for the entirety of their lives. Yet these advances have not reached everyone. The Smile Gap examines the enormous improvements that have taken place over the past century. The use of fluorides, emphasis on toothbrushing, the rise of cosmetic dentistry, and better access to dental care have had a profound effect on the oral health and beauty of Canadians. Yet while the introduction of employer-provided dental insurance in the 1970s has allowed for regular visits to the dentist for many people, a significant number of Canadians still lack access to good oral health care, especially disabled Canadians, those on social assistance, the working poor, the elderly, and new immigrants. At the same time, an attractive smile has become increasingly important in the workplace and in relationships. People with damaged and missing teeth are at a substantial disadvantage, not just because of the pain and suffering caused by poor oral health, but because we live in a society that prizes good teeth and warm smiles. The first history of oral health in Canada, The Smile Gap reveals that despite the gains made, too many Canadians go without any dental care, with damaging consequences for their oral health, general physical health, and self-image. To complete our health care system, it is time to close the gap.
