Download or read book Your Career As a Dental Hygienist written by Institute for Career Research and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DENTAL HYGIENIST IS ONE OF THE most challenging healthcare careers. It is both physically and emotionally demanding and also requires a high level of intelligence. At the same time, it is a highly rewarding profession, providing the dental hygienist with opportunities to help many children and adults on the path to better health. To excel as a dental hygienist you must have stamina, dexterity, and intense concentration. You must be a skilled visual observer and also a good listener, able to pay attention to detail and sort out the important data. In addition, you must be able to interact well with both colleagues and patients and, with the patients, have the ability to explain what you are doing when treating them and what they need to do to maintain their own dental well-being. This educational aspect of the work is viewed by many dental hygienists as the most important component of their work. In fact, dental hygienists are in some ways the most important health educators with whom many people ever come in contact. Above all, you must have an empathetic nature, understanding that the patients you see are often in pain. You must be able to put them at ease, to the greatest degree possible under the circumstances, and proceed with your work with the utmost delicacy and care. For many patients, the problem is not pain as much as it is fear, not necessarily of you, but of simply being in a dentist's office and in the treatment chair. These patients require your compassion. Their fears may not reflect the reality of the experience, but they are nonetheless real for those patients. This is a career that offers independence, even when working under the auspices of a dental practice. Hygienists work alone, usually in their own treatment rooms. While many states in the US still require that a hygienist work in a dentist's office, in recent years most states and many Canadian provinces have decided to allow them to work out of their own offices, or in clinics or other healthcare settings without the presence of a dentist. Many dental hygienists are extremely excited about these changes. They note that the public in general is strongly in favor of having increased access to healthcare professionals, especially those working with under-served populations. It is a promising development for these communities to have access to easy, convenient, affordable dental care. As these changes take place, the availability of dental hygiene in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and programs such as Head Start, can lead to a fundamental change in the overall health of the nation, with the cost of dental care reduced because of the preventative work that is being done. All of this makes it a great time to be joining the dental hygiene profession! It is possible that there will be a shortage as the demand for dental hygienists will be high in the coming years. Dental hygienists tend to make more than other healthcare professionals with similar levels of education and responsibilities. Of course, there will be differences from state to state, and between urban and rural regions. Even with the demand, you may not find exactly the right job the first time you look, but with so much happening in the profession, it is a great time to be looking for that perfect fit.

Book excerpt: Fifty Years - Two Careers Thinking of a career change? 30% of the American workforce does it yearly, and job losses during a pandemic have made it even more likely. Take a journey with the author and watch a kid interested in science, math, biology, and medicine enter a career in mechanical engineering, designing computers at IBM Corporation. A quarter century later in the early 1990s, portions of the computer industry underwent a major upheaval, causing the author to seriously investigate a complete career change. His casual interest in medicine and dentistry took on an entirely new meaning, as he spent months pondering whether he could make such a drastic career detour into the medical field. He decided to take the plunge and set sail into uncharted waters, learning a new language - that of the human body. Once again, he did it at Broome Community College, in Binghamton, New York, where his first quarter century career began. Follow him through his half century of two completely different careers, and see how his lifelong interest in dentistry led to a new career as a male Registered Dental Hygienist. His book has been written to be an enjoyable read for everyone, because the stories are all true, interesting, and down to earth. People dealing with a career change will certainly enjoy it. Dental hygiene students and new dental hygienists will gain valuable insight into their chosen career, and medical and dental office staff will undoubtedly find some of the stories similar to theirs. Both males and females will gain insight into a career change where their gender doesn't typically enter a career dominated by the other gender. After over a half century of allowing males into the dental hygiene profession, male dental hygienists are becoming more common; but still make up only about 6% of all dental hygienists. His stories cover the gamut; from the humorous to those that show the satisfaction a dental hygienist receives by being part of a team of professionals that help make a real difference in their patient's lives. Never boring, his stories of life as a Registered Dental Hygienist will give everyone hope that such dramatic career changes are possible.

  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Homeless Hero written by Mike Tapscott and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homeless Hero: Understanding the Soul of Home considers the human mission to know the soul and navigate life experiences. When pain and emptiness show up in life, only those who undertake the hero's journey grow into a place of understanding where they can then flourish. Mike Tapscott was watching a movie at a resource center for homeless people when he developed the idea for this book. The movie workshop at Lodestar Day Resource Center in Phoenix, Arizona, teaches life's lessons through the magic of cinema. The lessons manifest through a series of dramatic events: hearing a call to adventure; refusing the call; crossing a threshold; encountering tests, allies and enemies; being unable to turn back; soul searching; finding reward; returning with the story; and experiencing resurrection. These events are what life is all about. The hero's journey through homelessness--just one symptom of the challenge of overcoming emotional pain--is one way to help change individuals and then change tracks, patterns, and less-than-constructive behaviors. Here is a compilation of experiences from Tapscott's 36-hour experimental journey into life on the streets, his own volunteer work and through interviews with employees in the social service system, other volunteers and homeless individuals. Homeless Hero is a case study, an experiment, an adventure, and a multi-layered examination of American society that seeks to help you understand the moving picture of your own hero's journey.
