Book Understanding Dental Health

Download or read book Understanding Dental Health written by Francis G. Serio and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking into your mouth is like looking under the hood of your car. Both are dark and mysterious places. Unfortunately, unlike your car, your mouth did not come with a guide to operation and repair. This book can serve as an "owner's manual," for it was written for those who hope to understand the mouth and how to keep it healthy. It will introduce what is in the mouth and how to take proper care of it. From its outline of the anatomy of the mouth to its discussions of contemporary dental research and technology, this book offers insight into the processes that determine dental health. It details daily oral hygiene and maintenance aimed at reducing the occurrence of common oral maladies. Also explained is the dentist's role in prevention and treatment, as well as the costs of dental care. Virtually all persons are affected by dental diseases of some sort. Many dental problems, especially bad breath, gum disease, and cavities, are almost entirely preventable. Whether it is for bleeding gums, cavities, crooked teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, stains, a host of other problems, or just a periodic checkup, nearly everyone will spend time and money at the dentist's office. For those who are concerned about appropriate care of the mouth and the teeth this clearly written book will be useful. The principles of dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, and select technical innovations in dentistry are discussed and clearly explained. Also, a helpful list of dental schools that provide low-cost care and a list of resources for further information are included. Although this book is not meant to be comprehensive, it offers the firm foundation for having informed discussion with your dentist and for maintaining oral health for a lifetime.

Book Advancing Oral Health in America

Download or read book Advancing Oral Health in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though it is highly preventable, tooth decay is a common chronic disease both in the United States and worldwide. Evidence shows that decay and other oral diseases may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. However, individuals and many health care professionals remain unaware of the risk factors and preventive approaches for many oral diseases. They do not fully appreciate how oral health affects overall health and well-being. In Advancing Oral Health in America, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) highlights the vital role that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) can play in improving oral health and oral health care in the United States. The IOM recommends that HHS design an oral health initiative which has clearly articulated goals, is coordinated effectively, adequately funded and has high-level accountability. In addition, the IOM stresses three key areas needed for successfully maintaining oral health as a priority issue: strong leadership, sustained interest, and the involvement of multiple stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. Advancing Oral Health in America provides practical recommendations that the Department of Health and Human Services can use to improve oral health care in America. The report will serve as a vital resource for federal health agencies, health care professionals, policy makers, researchers, and public and private health organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of maintaining cleanliness of one's mouth and keeping it germ-free is called oral hygiene. Dental and gum diseases which affect oral hygiene include dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. The common and effective methods to maintain oral hygiene and to prevent oral diseases include routine tooth brushing, flossing and the use of tongue scrapers. Flossing is a technique used to remove plaque from the space between the teeth. Tongue scrapers are used to remove the debris built up on the tongue. It traces the progress of this field and highlights some of its key concepts and applications. Book The Scientific Basis of Oral Health Education

Download or read book The Scientific Basis of Oral Health Education written by Ronnie Levine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this classic text appeared in 1976 with the aim of refining and standardising the advice given to the public and to ensure that such advice was scientifically sound and evidence-based. It was written not only for members of the dental professions and those involved in general healthcare including medical practitioners, school nurses, health visitors, midwives, dieticians, pharmacists and public health practitioners, but also those who influence health in the wider community, such as teachers, child carers and peer educators. While originally written for a UK readership it became clear that it was used in other countries and that a new international edition was needed. To ensure that this new edition would reflect a consensus of international expert opinion and be relevant to a much broader readership, a panel of eminent experts was enlisted from as far afield as Japan, Singapore, Denmark, Switzerland and the USA. The text is consistent with current evidence and guidance from the WHO, and includes comparative guidance from other countries and systematic reviews of research evidence from the Cochrane Collaboration database. It provides information and advice on the main aspects of oral health, including the cause and prevention of dental caries, periodontal disease, dental erosion, oral cancer and dental problems in children under five, and older people. Throughout the book, key points are given at the beginning of each chapter, with an indication of the strength of supporting scientific evidence using a simple scheme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tooth Health Beginners Guide Oral health is not solely about preventing bad breath or cavities; it is a vital aspect of maintaining the proper functioning of our entire body. Our mouth is the gateway to our body, and the state of our oral health can have significant implications for our overall health. Numerous studies have shown a strong link between oral health and various systemic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory infections, and even adverse pregnancy outcomes. One of the key reasons oral health matters is that the mouth is teeming with bacteria. While most of these bacteria are harmless, some can contribute to the development of dental issues like cavities and gum disease. Proper oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and visits to the dentist, help control the growth of harmful bacteria and prevent these issues from escalating. Beyond the physical aspect, oral health also has psychological and social dimensions. A healthy smile can boost self-confidence and improve social interactions. On the contrary, oral health problems can lead to embarrassment, reduced self-esteem, and even social isolation. This highlights the impact oral health can have on our mental and emotional well-being. The digestive process begins in the mouth, where enzymes in saliva initiate the breakdown of food. Healthy teeth enable efficient chewing, which aids in proper digestion and nutrient absorption. A healthy mouth allows us to enjoy a diverse range of foods, including fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Painful teeth or gum issues can limit food choices, potentially affecting our nutritional intake. Teeth play a crucial role in forming sounds and speech. Well-maintained teeth enable clear and effective communication, contributing to social and professional interactions. Dental problems can cause significant pain, affecting our ability to focus on daily tasks. Toothaches or discomfort can lead to disrupted sleep and reduced quality of life. Book Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations

Download or read book Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-22 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to oral health care is essential to promoting and maintaining overall health and well-being, yet only half of the population visits a dentist each year. Poor and minority children are less likely to have access to oral health care than are their nonpoor and nonminority peers. Older adults, people who live in rural areas, and disabled individuals, uniformly confront access barriers, regardless of their financial resources. The consequences of these disparities in access to oral health care can lead to a number of conditions including malnutrition, childhood speech problems, infections, diabetes, heart disease, and premature births. Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations examines the scope and consequences of inadequate access to oral health services in the United States and recommends ways to combat the economic, structural, geographic, and cultural factors that prevent access to regular, quality care. The report suggests changing funding and reimbursement for dental care; expanding the oral health work force by training doctors, nurses, and other nondental professionals to recognize risk for oral diseases; and revamping regulatory, educational, and administrative practices. It also recommends changes to incorporate oral health care into overall health care. These recommendations support the creation of a diverse workforce that is competent, compensated, and authorized to serve vulnerable and underserved populations across the life cycle. The recommendations provided in Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations will help direct the efforts of federal, state, and local government agencies; policy makers; health professionals in all fields; private and public health organizations; licensing and accreditation bodies; educational institutions; health care researchers; and philanthropic and advocacy organizations.
