Book Measurement and Characterization of Fear and Avoidance in Dental Anxiety

Download or read book Measurement and Characterization of Fear and Avoidance in Dental Anxiety written by Laura Jeanne Dempster and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental anxiety is the most common psychological condition encountered in dental practice. Gaps exist in our understanding of its epidemiology and characteristics due to a lack of consistency in the way studies have defined and measured it. The aim of this research was to develop a more comprehensive understanding of dental anxiety in the general population by investigating the prevalence and correlates of fear and avoidance. Specifically, the relationship between these cognitive and behavioural dimensions of dental anxiety was the focus of examination. A new test, the Dental Fear and Avoidance Scale (DFAS), was developed and its reliability and validity tested. Test-retest reliability of the DFAS showed an intraclass correlation of 0.87 for both fear and avoidance dimensions of the scale, demonstrating high reliability suitable for research purposes. The validity of the DFAS was tested by comparing fear and avoidance scores on the DFAS with responses to fear- and avoidance-related questions in a self-report questionnaire. Significant differences (p & le; 0.01) were noted between: mean scores for low and high DFAS fear categories and Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) scores, and questions regarding dental treatment, having a needle in the mouth, and various evoking stimuli; and between low and high avoidance DFAS categories and questions about avoidance behaviours, the frequency of dental visits and when subjects last saw a dentist. A correlation of 0.60 confirmed fear and avoidance as related but distinct entities. The DFAS categorized subjects (n=1184) as 62.7% low fear/low avoidance, 14.4% high fear/low avoidance, 6.3% low fear/high avoidance, and 16.6% high fear/high avoidance. Significant differences (p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioral Dentistry, Second Edition, surveys the vast and absorbing topic of the role of behavioral science in the study and clinical practice of dentistry. An understanding of social sciences has long been a central part of dental education, and essential for developing a clinician’s appreciation of human behavior as it affects efficient dental treatment. This book gathers together contributions from leading experts in each of the major subspecialties of behavioral dentistry. Its aim is not merely to provide the student and clinician with a comprehensive review of the impressive literature or discussion of the theoretical background to the subject, but also with a practical guide to adapting the latest techniques and protocols and applying them to day-to-day clinical practice. This second edition of Behavioral Dentistry discusses biobehavioral processes, including the psychobiology of inflammation and pain, oral health and quality of life, saliva health, and hypnosis in dentistry. The book goes on to examine anxiety, fear, and dental and chronic orofacial pain, and then reviews techniques for designing and managing behavior change. It concludes with a section on professional practice, including care of special needs, geriatric, and diabetic patients, and interpersonal communication in dental education.

Book Assessment of Dental Fear and Anxiety

Download or read book Assessment of Dental Fear and Anxiety written by Anju Rajwar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excessive fear of dental treatment is frequently encountered in children, and has several negative consequences. It can be very stressful for both dentist and child and may result in irregular or no visits to the dentist at all, which bears a negative impact on the child's oral health. Dental fear can also interfere with rendering effective dental treatment for the child. In children, dental fear is often the main reason of behavioural management problems. Other negative consequences of dental fear include avoidance of the dental situation and subsequently deterioration of oral health. This eventually may start a vicious circle of avoidance, creating feelings of shame, guilt and inferiority, further maintaining this negative spiral by reinforcing one's fear and avoidance behaviour. A wide range of instruments were proposed and applied to identify and quantify dental anxiety/fear. The use of these measures helps to identify fearful individuals and take necessary steps to modify treatment plan in accordance with the needs.

Book An Examination of Constructs Associated with Dental Anxiety and Avoidance Among Adults Seeking Dental Care

Download or read book An Examination of Constructs Associated with Dental Anxiety and Avoidance Among Adults Seeking Dental Care written by Dina Gordon Kinner and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental anxiety and the avoidance of dental treatment serve as substantial barriers to dental care and are associated with a range of maladaptive behaviors and outcomes. However, many important psychological constructs that may increase our understanding of anxiety and avoidance in relation to dental care and hence our ability to properly intervene have been poorly examined or neglected in the literature. The present study examined the prevalence of dental anxiety, specific phobia of dental procedures, and avoidance of dental care among dental patients presenting for routine (n = 78) and emergency (n = 42) care using self-report questionnaires, clinician-administered interview, and 6-month follow-up dental appointment data. We investigated correlates of dental anxiety, dental phobia, avoidance of dental care, and oral-health related quality of life (OHRQoL). It was expected that emergency patients would exhibit significantly greater impairment that regular care patients across several variables, with a similar pattern expected for patients with a specific phobia relative to those without the diagnosis. Further, it was hypothesized that emotion regulation, distress tolerance, experiential avoidance, and mindfulness would moderate the anxiety-avoidance and anxiety-OHRQoL relationships. Additional models tested the moderating roles of pain, optimism, and re-experiencing symptoms related to a prior traumatic dental event on the relationship between social appearance anxiety and avoidance of dental care. Dental anxiety, severity of phobia, and OHRQoL correlated with social appearance anxiety, pain experienced at the last dental appointment, re-experiencing symptoms, and blood-injection-injury fears, among other variables; however, there was no evidence that they were related to emotion regulation, and limited relationships emerged with experiential avoidance, distress tolerance, and mindfulness. Avoidance of dental care was unrelated to dental anxiety, other forms of anxiety, OHRQoL, pain, pessimism, and several other constructs related to emotion dysregulation, and difficulties with mindfulness. Our hypotheses that emergency patients would have a higher prevalence of dental phobia, longer avoidance, and greater pain at the last dental appointment than regular care patients was supported, although the groups did not differ on dental anxiety or remaining variables. As expected, patients with specific phobia (n = 26) scored higher than those without a diagnosis (n = 94) on dental anxiety, OHRQoL, social appearance anxiety, re-experiencing symptoms, and pain, but these groups did not differ on avoidance or other constructs. Our moderation hypotheses had minimal support: Dental anxiety was most strongly associated with avoidance of a dental appointment among those reporting the greatest experiential avoidance and the least mindful awareness, and dental anxiety was most strongly associated with OHRQoL among those demonstrating the greatest mindful observing. Implications of these findings are addressed, followed by a discussion of study limitations and directions for future research.

Book Dental Fear and Anxiety in Pediatric Patients

Download or read book Dental Fear and Anxiety in Pediatric Patients written by Caroline Campbell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive guide to pediatric dental fear/anxiety (DFA) and phobia that will provide practitioners with a full understanding of the etiology, prevalence, assessment, and management of these conditions. The coping styles of children when under stress are explored, with discussion of their relevance to the assessment visit and treatment allocation. Practical treatment techniques are comprehensively covered, from non-pharmacological behavioral strategies relevant for children with no or mild DFA to those approaches more appropriate for children with severe DFA/phobia. The importance of the use of language and communication skills to build rapport and allay anxiety is explored. Relaxation and hypnosis techniques are described, with guidance on how to introduce these to patients and their parents/carers. Techniques that help children cope when receiving injections are detailed, including systematic needle desensitization ; these provide practitioners with options to help resolve DFA and phobia regarding needles. Intravenous sedation, including the challenge of cannulation, is covered comprehensively. Furthermore, cognitive behavioral therapy is presented, with suggestion of practical self-help material when appropriate. The closing chapter looks to the future, discussing the barriers to and the changes required for the creation of more child-centered DFA services.
