Book The Science and Art of Dental Ceramics Volume I

Download or read book The Science and Art of Dental Ceramics Volume I written by John W. McLean and published by Quintessenz Verlag. This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a no more rewarding experience in restorative dentistry than to duplicate to perfection the colour, texture and surface anatomy of the human tooth. Dental porcelain is the closest match to tooth enamel of all our restorative materials but is perhaps the most difficult to use in dental practice. A study of the science of dental porcelain will enable the dentist or technician to perfect his art since it develops an increasing awareness of the fundamental problems in construction. Preparation design, the stresses developing in porcelain restorations, the influence of opaque backgrounds on colour, surface reflectivity and light transmission in crowns are some of the complex factors that influence the success of a porcelain veneer restoration. A survey of metals, bonding systems, cements and impression materials will enable the clinician to select his materials with greater confidence. New research on the shoulder preparation for the veneer crown also sheds light on the controversy of the bevel versus the butt joint. The author has attempted to rationalise the use of both metal and alumina reinforced ceramics and to show how no ingle system can be applied universally if optimum aesthetics is to be achieved.

Book Advanced Ceramics for Dentistry

Download or read book Advanced Ceramics for Dentistry written by Simon Jegou Saint-Jean and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feldspathic porcelains, leucite, and lithium disilicate glass-ceramics are important materials used in restorative dentistry for their biocompatibility, excellent aesthetic properties, good mechanical strength, and relative ease of use. As a general rule in clinical practice, the choice of material should be dictated by the specific clinical situation. It depends on the space available to build the aesthetic and functional restoration, but also on the nature of the underlying tooth or restorative structure. The best aesthetic results are obtained with feldspathic porcelain restorations directly resin-bonded to the tooth, whereas the best function is obtained with the stronger and tougher fully anatomical or veneered glass-ceramic crowns and bridges. The main limitation with these ceramics is their insufficient strength for use as posterior crowns and bridges. Possible means to obtain aesthetically pleasing and long-term performing posterior restorations are the development of stronger glass-ceramics, the use of translucent colored zirconia, or the use of the new class of more elastic hybrid polymer-ceramic materials.

Book Recent Advancements In Dental Ceramics

Download or read book Recent Advancements In Dental Ceramics written by Yadav Ravi Shankar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental Ceramic materials are best able to mimic the appearance of natural teeth. Metal ceramic restorations have been available for more than three decades.metal ceramic restoration has gained popularity from its predictable performance and reasonable esthetics. Despite its success, the demand for improved esthetics and the concerns regarding the biocompatibility of the metal has lead to the introduction of all-ceramic restorations. Recent advancements in ceramic processing methods have simplified the work of the dental technician and have allowed greater quality control for ceramic materials, which has increased their mechanical reliability.

It also discusses the development of experiments to test ceramic designs, how to select the appropriate material according to the specific clinical application, as well as evidence regarding adhesive mechanisms for bonding ceramic restorations. Through examining clinical failures, the book also aims to improve clinical performance through the suggestion of improved materials, structures and designs. The ultimate aim of this book therefore is to provide the reader with the knowledge to be able to select the appropriate ceramic material and bonding technique for each clinical application.
