Book excerpt: A murder in Tucson on the 4th of July leads to a deadly Arizona crime ring in this “expert police procedural with plenty of quirks and twists” (Kirkus). Tucson Homicide detective Sarah Burke is just getting used to living with her boyfriend, her fragile mother, and her hard-charging niece Denny, when a baffling murder case consumes their entire household. A man seen fighting in his home during a Fourth of July parade is later found murdered. There’s surprisingly little evidence in the house to identify who he was—apart from a gun and large sums of cash. Burke and her team of detectives begin to suspect that the victim had been involved in a money laundering scheme. But was the murder a matter of black market business, or something tragically personal? As an ICE investigator follows the money to an international drug cartel, Burke uncovers a trail that lead unsettlingly close to home

Book The White Book

Download or read book The White Book written by Ken Mansfield and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2007-10-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through exclusive photos and personal stories, former US manager of Apple Records and Grammy Award winning producer Ken Mansfield offers a compelling memoir that delves into his life in the 1960s and '70s and his unique partnership with the Beatles and other musicians who orbited their world. As observer, friend, and colleague, Mansfield sat in their recording sessions, partied in their swimming pools, took their irate calls, and publicized their successes. Entertaining, historically accurate, and illuminating a side of the Fab Four known only to a few like Mansfield, The White Book shines fresh light on the true characters behind the cultural phenomena that revolutionized a generation. As the former Head of Apple Records International, Jack Oliver, has said of Ken, "He is one of the few insiders left that bore witness to the highs and lows of those insane days when we ruled the world." "Ken has a unique gift. He can take you in the room and have you sit with the folk he knows and make you one of the gang, part of the plan. and considering these folk include the Beatles, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, the Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, David Cassidy and a whole host more that is some doing. I really enjoyed sitting in on his world and I respect the affection he has for our game, and what he brought to it, will get you." ANDREW LOOG OLDHAM Rolling Stones Manager and Producer "Ken Mansfield brings us a new and closely personal perspective not only on the Beatles, but on a whole cast of musical characters from Brian Wilson to Don Ho. An observant and perceptive man in the centre of the storm; a contradictory man, both ambitious and spiritual, but at the heart of the record industry during its most exciting years and enjoying every minute of it. I lived through those years with Ken and we became friends. It is a pleasure to experience so much of it all again through the accuracy of his story telling and the clarity of his memory." PETER ASHER Peter and Gordon/A&R Chief Apple Records/Producer-Manager (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King et al) "Journalism is normally a very inexact science. Many of the countless books about the Beatles have been written by researchers-not by people who were actually there. Everyone has experienced reading a book or article where one's own inside knowledge about a particular person or event shows up inaccuracies on the part of the writer that totally distort the truth. This book is an exception-I know because I was there for some of it myself. Ken Mansfield and I unknowingly shared the experience of the famous Apple rooftop session where I was nervously adjusting mikes and cables for the sound recording of that unforgettable day. Ken was not only working for the Beatles through their heyday, he was also their trusted friend. There is no one better equipped to tell the Beatles' story-truthfully-and more importantly-factually, from the inside." ALAN PARSONS Engineer to the Beatles/Pink Floyd, Multi Platinum Producer, Alan Parsons Project "Unlike many people claiming a Beatles connection, Ken Mansfield doesn't have an agenda or try to elevate his role or importance. Ken comes across as a man who knows how lucky he was to be where he was and enjoys sharing his stories with us. Ken was there and that is why The White Book is informative, fresh and entertaining without being ego-driven." BRUCE SPIZER Author, Beatle Historian

Book excerpt: Like many other pioneering North West Mounted Police officers, Cecil Denny was a colourful, independent man with a career full of conquest and controversy. He and his comrades played key roles in the taming of Canada's wild and woolly west, and in this compilation of selected writings from his books The Law Marches West and The Riders of the Plains, we get that story straight from the horse's mouth. Denny relates the fascinating saga of the newly formed police force's 800-mile trek west in 1874 to deal with outlaw whisky traders, then gives us a first-hand account of the challenges and adventures they experienced bringing law and order to this "great lone land." Denny's Trek features an illuminating new introduction to this observant writer, providing fresh insights into the times and the character of a steadfast man who helped shaped Canada's West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Legal Compliance Handbook, Third Edition, provides the knowledge necessary to implement or enhance a compliance program in a specific company, or in a client's company. The book focuses not only on doing what is legal or what is right--the two are both important but not always the same--but also on how to make a compliance program actually work. The book is organized in a sequence that follows how to approach a compliance program. It gives the compliance officer, consultant, or attorney a good grounding in the basics of compliance law. This includes such things as the rules about corporate and individual liability, an understanding of the basics of the key laws that impact companies, and the workings of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. Successful programs also require an understanding of educational techniques, good communication skills, and the use of computer tools. The effective compliance program also takes into account how to deliver messages using a variety of media to reach employees in different locations, of different ages or education, who speak different languages. Book A Lawyer s Life

Download or read book A Lawyer s Life written by Johnnie Cochran and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most famous lawyer in America talks about the law, his life, and how he has won. Johnnie Cochran has been a lawyer for almost forty years. In that time, he has taken on dozens of groundbreaking cases and emerged as a pivotal figure in race relations in America. Cochran gained international recognition as one of America's best - and most controversial lawyers - for leading 'the Dream Team' defense of accused killer O.J. Simpson in the Trial of the Century. Many people formed their perception of Cochran based on his work in that trial. But long before the Simpson trial and since then Johnnie Cochran has been a leader in the fight for justice for all Americans. This is his story. Cochran emerged from the trial as one of the nation's leading African-American spokespersons - and he has done most of his talking through the courtroom. Abner Louima. Amadou Diallo. The racially-profiled New Jersey Turnpike Four. Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. Patrick Dorismond. Cynthia Wiggins. These are the names that have dominated legal headlines - and Cochran was involved with each of them. No one who first encountered him during the Simpson trial can appreciate his impact on our world until they've read his whole story. Drawing on Cochran's most intriguing and difficult cases, A Lawyer's Life shows how he's fought his critics, won for his clients, and affected real change within the system. This is an intimate and compelling memoir of one lawyer's attempt to make us all truly equal in the eyes of the law.

Book Letters from Thistle Hill and Denny s of the Gods

Download or read book Letters from Thistle Hill and Denny s of the Gods written by Kacey Carlson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-12-29 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series of essays created concerning this journey were published, and then picked up and re-published several years later, in two different Pagan-themed magazines, Hole in the Stone, based in Denver, Colorado, and The Rune, published in Kansas City, Missouri. When possible, I have copied the essays as they originally appeared in one or the other of the magazines and others are printed out of my own archives. The illustrations printed in Hole in the Stone, and reproduced here, are by Steven Clark. Photographs in the articles are by George Moyer. The essays represent my evolution as both a spiritual being and as a writer over the years between 1994 in 2000. Requests for reprints of the essays have inspired me to publish the collection in bound form. I have now lived on Thistle Hill for 22 years and consider it one of the most powerful forces for evolution I have ever encountered. I would not be who I am without the story and context of this sacred space

Book excerpt: A restaurant critic can tell you about the chef. A menu can tell you about the farm-sourced ingredients. Now who's going to tell you about the people preparing your meal? From 2015 James Beard Leadership Award winner Saru Jayaraman, Forked is an enlightening examination of what we don't talk about when we talk about restaurants: Is the line cook working through a case of stomach flu because he doesn't get paid sick days? Is the busser not being promoted because he speaks with an accent? Is the server tolerating sexual harassment because tips are her only income? As most corporate restaurants continue to set low standards for worker wages and benefits, a new class of chefs and restaurateurs is working to foster sustainability in their food and their employees. Forked offers an insider's view of the highest--and lowest--scoring restaurants for worker pay and benefits in each sector of the restaurant industry, and with it, a new way of thinking about how and where we eat.

Book Women and the Law of Property in Early America

Download or read book Women and the Law of Property in Early America written by Marylynn Salmon and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first comprehensive study of women's property rights in early America, Marylynn Salmon discusses the effect of formal rules of law on women's lives. By focusing on such areas such as conveyancing, contracts, divorce, separate estates, and widows' provisions, Salmon presents a full picture of women's legal rights from 1750 to 1830. Salmon shows that the law assumes women would remain dependent and subservient after marriage. She documents the legal rights of women prior to the Revolution and traces a gradual but steady extension of the ability of wives to own and control property during the decades following the Revolution. The forces of change in colonial and early national law were various, but Salmon believes ideological considerations were just as important as economic ones. Women did not all fare equally under the law. In this illuminating survey of the jurisdictions of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and South Carolina, Salmon shows regional variations in the law that affected women's autonomous control over property. She demonstrates the importance of understanding the effects of formal law on women' s lives in order to analyze the wider social context of women's experience.
