Book The Oxford Handbook of Danish Politics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Danish Politics written by Peter Munk Christiansen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Danish Politics provides the most comprehensive and thorough English language book on Danish politics ever written. It features chapters by 50 leading experts who have contributed extensively to the field they write about. Why is Denmark an interesting topic for a Handbook? In some respects, Danish political institutions and political life are very similar to that of other small, North European countries such as the other Scandinavian countries and Netherland. However, in other respects, Danish politics is interesting in its own right. For instance, Denmark has a world record in minority governments. According to standard scholarly knowledge, this should result in unstable governments and a bad economy. This is not the case, however, since Denmark has a rather stable political system and a strong and robust economy among the strongest in Europe. How? The Danes have continued reservations towards the EU despite close to 50 years of EC/EU membership, and the Danes rejected the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. Still, the EU issue is handled in ways that do not call for large political battles. How? A third example is that Denmark used to be known as a tolerant and liberal society; its Jews were almost all saved during German occupation during WWII, Denmark was the first country to free pornography, and the first country to formally register same-sex couples. Yet recent Danish politics has also been associated with xenophobia and anti-Muslim sentiments. Why?

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), course: Viadrina Model United Nations 2006, language: English, abstract: Before the actual session we forwarded an official policy statement to the Secretary of the UN. All other delegations produced as well these so-called policy papers. In this paper we explained our point of view, as agreed with our department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Beate Schneider Position Paper of Denmark Andreas Lorek Honourable Delegate of Denmark Honourable Delegate of Denmark Denmark is an active contributor to and participant of the international system. Our country has always taken its place among the world community concerning political challenges and tasks. It has supported the fight against terrorism since its beginning and will not give up securing a safe and just environment. The Islamic Republic of Iran is one country in the world threatening freedom and democracy and therefore Denmark, together with its allies, has to find a peaceful solution to this problem. In the past couple of months Denmark has experienced a never-experienced wave of violence following the publishing of comics with an Islamic topic in a Danish newspaper. The publisher of these comics has clearly not thought about the consequences its actions would have. The concerned Danish newspaper has offered its apology to all Muslims for the offence caused by the drawings. Denmark is a very tolerant country which enables its citizens to live according to their cultures and believes. We tolerate the feelings and ways of living of all inhabitants of our country. In Denmark there is a genuine respect for the religious feelings of other people. However, there are certain values that we are willing to defend against people that threaten them such as democracy, freedom and safety for our and other innocent citizens.

Book Britain and Denmark

Download or read book Britain and Denmark written by Jørgen Sevaldsen and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1815, Denmark and Britain have lived in peace with each other. From the last half of the 19th century, massive British imports of Danish agricultural products gave Britain a central role in the Danish economy, likewise in the 20th century, British efforts in the two world wars became of crucial importance to Denmark's position in relation to Germany and, later, the Soviet Union. In the same period, the emergence of English as the first foreign language in Denmark facilitated the increasingly closer human and cultural contacts between the two countries. Britain and Denmark, written by Danish and British historians, constitutes the first attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of the roles that these two neighbouring countries have played in the lives of each other during the last two centuries. They are different in size and have had very different global and regional orientations. So, naturally, Britain has always loomed larger in Danish life and politics than the other way round. In many areas, however, relations have been close. The book covers contacts relating to trade, security policies and social and political theory, but also touch on mutual influences within the areas of literature, music, design etc. Most treatments of Danish political and cultural relations with the outside world in this period concentrate on Germany for the period up to 1945, and on the Soviet Union and the USA in the post-war world. In the same way, works on British contemporary history rarely devote much space to relations with the Nordic countries. The aim, therefore, of this book is to provide a supplement, and perhaps corrective, to the existing literature on the international positions of Britain and Denmark in the modern world.

Book Denmark Greenland in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Denmark Greenland in the Twentieth Century written by Axel Kjær Sørensen and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2007-11-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces Danish-Greenlandic relations in the period 1900-2000. The main trend is the development from a colonial situation in 1900 with a state owned company runnig nearly all business to an open economy with steadily growing self-government for Greenland short of full independence. The Danish policy can be described as benevolent, but financially the budget was tight until after the second World War, the philosophy being that Denmark should neither lose nor gain. After the war there was heavy investment to bring Greenland nearer to standards of living comparable to Denmark and substantial subsidies were given make that happen. The Greenlanders attitude towards Denmark developed along lines familiar from other examples of decolonisation. The first phase of accepting the coloniser was long over, now seeking equality with the coloniser was the main aim in their endeavours. From 1911 two provincial councils woiced speaking the Greenlanders views and their political influence steadily grew. In 1953 Greenland got representation in the Danish parliament. The third phase of doing without the coloniser began in the early 1970s when Greenlanders sought home rule status, obtained in 1979. In the following twenty years the Home Rule Authority gradually took over nearly all lawmaking and administration and from 2004 a committee has explored ways of giving Greenland a more independent voice in foreign affairs. In 2003 the ultimate goal was declared to be full independence.

Book National Identity Politics and Postcolonial Sovereignty Games

Download or read book National Identity Politics and Postcolonial Sovereignty Games written by Ulrik Pram Gad and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greenland views itself as being on the way to sovereignty. This image – and the tensions involved in it – structure the triangular relation between the EU, Greenland and Denmark. The central Other of Greenland has for a couple of centuries been Denmark, the colonial overlord. The national identity discourses of Greenland and Denmark both idealize national homogeneity. A central condition for a continuation of Rigsfællesskabet, the 'community of the realm' including Greenland and Denmark, is the idea that Greenland still needs external assistance in its development towards independence - and that this idea can be formulated in a way which does not infantilize Greenland metaphorically. As part of the postcolonial diversification of Greenland's dependency, the bilateral relation between Denmark and Greenland has gradually been opened up to involve 'other others'. Meanwhile, a discourse prognosticates that climate change is opening up the Arctic to minerals extraction and commerce. In these circumstances, the triangular relation with the EU is played out as a series of rhetorical and practical 'sovereignty games', in Nuuk, Copenhagen and Brussels. Particularly, a number of strategies are employed to minimize the apparent role of Denmark for the Greenlandic relations to the EU. The book approaches these changes in national identity discourse and practical foreign policy in five analytical steps: The core concepts organizing Danish and Greenlandic identity are identified in discourse analyses. Political debates are read as political identity negotiations. The practical diplomatic management of clashing identity discourses is uncovered via qualitative interviews with key actors (politicians, diplomats, and civil servants from Greenland, Denmark and the EU). Legal texts are approached as the 'frozen' outcome of rhetorical and practical sovereignty games. Finally, the book develops scenarios for the future and concludes by pointing out how the continuation of the community of the realm may have a better chance if conceived as an 'ever looser union'. One way for Denmark of facilitating this image would be to employ its diplomacy in the service of diversifying Greenland's dependence - following the example set in relation to the EU.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive study analyzes in detail the evolving political, economic, and diplomatic relationships between China and Denmark since their first contact in 1674. It is an important contribution to the growing literature on China's relations with the West since the beginning of the modern period. Non-Danes will be interested in how the unique nonimperialistic Danish approach to China has shaped a relationship quite different from the patterns of domination and conflict that have characterized the relations between the Middle Kingdom and the traditional great powers of the West.
