Book Life and Cult of Cnut the Holy

Download or read book Life and Cult of Cnut the Holy written by Steffen Hope and published by University Press of Southern Denmark. This book was released on 2019 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: n 1986, to mark the 900th anniversary of the murder of King Cnut IV in the Church of Saint Alban in Odense, the Book of Cnut (Knuds-bogen) was published. The volume shed light on different aspects of the life and cult of Cnut as king and saint. Since then, archaeological excavations in Odense, as well as recent national and international research on the cult of Saint Cnut, have provided scholars with new information about the life and times of Cnut. Furthermore, recent scholarship within medieval studies has resulted in a range of studies which allow for innovative comparisons with the Cnut material. With the interdisciplinary seminar behind the present publication, we brought together both national and international experts. The aim was to bring forth new aspects of Cnut's life and afterlife and to put these in a wider, international context. By doing so, we aimed to lay the basis for future research about Cnut and to form the basis for further dissemination of the latest discoveries pertaining to Cnut and his time.

Book Hymn to Delos

Download or read book Hymn to Delos written by Callimachus and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive commentary on Callimachus' Hymn to Delos, its immediate predecessor being Cahen's concise work of 1930. The Introduction proposes a new interpretation of the Hymn's purpose and background, and further discusses the date of its composition, its vocabulary, several of its stylistic aspects, and its metre and prosody. The Commentary, which follows Pfeiffer's text (Oxford 1953), presents parallels from relevant Greek poetry (mainly epic and tragic) to illustrate tradition and originality in Callimachus' style, offers some new interpretations and examines old ones, and indicates possible allusions to contemporary events in Egypt and elsewhere. Textual problems are treated where necessary and emendations are also occasionally proposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jordanes, an active writer in the 6th century, penned 'The Origin and Deeds of the Goths' as a crucial piece of early Gothic history. Written in a straightforward and informative style, this book provides a detailed account of the origins, culture, and conquests of the Goths. Jordanes draws upon various sources, including the works of Cassiodorus, to narrate the history of this influential Germanic tribe in the context of the declining Roman Empire. His work serves as a valuable resource for scholars of both Gothic history and late antiquity literature. Jordanes' meticulous attention to detail and unbiased presentation make this book a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the complex interactions between barbarian and Roman societies in the 6th century. Overall, 'The Origin and Deeds of the Goths' is a compelling read that sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of ancient history and provides valuable insights into the world of the Goths.

Book Myths of Northern Lands Narrated with Special Reference to Literature and Art

Download or read book Myths of Northern Lands Narrated with Special Reference to Literature and Art written by H. A. Guerber and published by Becker Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Book Christianization and the Rise of Christian Monarchy

Download or read book Christianization and the Rise of Christian Monarchy written by Nora Berend and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2007 text is a comparative, analysis of one of the most fundamental stages in the formation of Europe. Leading scholars explore the role of the spread of Christianity and the formation of new principalities in the birth of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Bohemia, Hungary, Poland and Rus' around the year 1000. Drawing on history, archaeology and art history, and emphasizing problems related to the sources and historiographical debates, they demonstrate the complex interdependence between the processes of religious and political change, covering conditions prior to the introduction of Christianity, the adoption of Christianity, and the development of the rulers' power. Regional patterns emerge, highlighting both the similarities in ruler-sponsored cases of Christianization, and differences in the consolidation of power and in institutions introduced by Christianity. The essays reveal how local societies adopted Christianity; medieval ideas of what constituted the dividing line between Christians and non-Christians; and the connections between Christianity and power.

Book excerpt: A detailed history of our particular branch of Grahams descending from the Lower Mearns of Kincardineshire Scotland. It traces Grahams and extended relatives from Scotland to America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. And even yet, there are gaps, mysteries and loose threads that may yet yield other relations to the earliest Grahams in and around St. Cyrus parish on the north east coast of Scotland. While there are only 166 Grahams in our family tree, their history and dispersion from the lower Mearns offers engaging insights into the hard lives that must have existed in the 18th and 19th centuries.
