More and more individuals are attending college in today’s society. College students are, however, a vulnerable population and increasing rates of serious psychological problems within this population have been noted (Erdur-Baker, Aberson, Barrow, & Draper, 2006; Parcover, Mays, & McCarthy, 2015; Yorgason, Linville, & Zitzman, 2008). In spite of the increasing rates of mental health concerns on campuses, utilization of psychotherapy as treatment for mental health concerns remains low (Gallagher, 2014; Ketchen Lipson, Gaddis, Heinze, Beck, & Eisenberg, 2015; Yorgason et al., 2008). If left untreated, there are several serious implications for college students struggling with mental health concerns. These consequences include a decreased sense of well-being and academic concerns, such as lower grade point averages (Choi, Buskey, & Johnson, 2010; Douce & Keeling, 2014; National Alliance on Mental Illness [NAMI], 2015). Students with untreated mental illnesses are also more likely to drop out of school and have a less satisfying college experience (Salzer, 2012). There are several barriers prohibiting students from accessing professional care for mental health problems. These include stigma of mental illness (Miranda, Soffer, Polanco-Roman, Wheeler, & Moore, 2015; NAMI, 2012; Yorgason et al., 2008) and lack of mental health literacy (Miranda et al., 2015; NAMI, 2012; Nordberg, Hayes, McAleavey, Castonguay, & Locke, 2013; Yorgason et al., 2008). It is important to reduce and eliminate these barriers to treatment on college campuses in order to improve access to mental health care. Outreach activities on college campuses can assist in reducing stigma and increasing knowledge regarding psychotherapy as treatment for mental health concerns (NAMI, 2012). What is lacking is efficient, easy to implement outreach that informs students, faculty, and staff about mental health, the purpose of psychotherapy, and how to access counseling services. The goal of this dissertation is to create an outreach manual and materials to be utilized by college counseling centers. Hopefully, the outreach program will provide all members of the campus community with an increased awareness of mental health concerns and psychotherapy as an effective treatment.
