Book Demystifying Social Finance and Social Investment

Download or read book Demystifying Social Finance and Social Investment written by Mark Salway and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social finance and social investment are not challenging concepts to grasp. They use commercial-style investment tools to create a social as well as a financial return. The application, however, is not always as straightforward. This book begins in the wider field of social finance but focuses primarily on social investment as a tool. The reader is helped to understand this from different angles: introducing social investment, discussing social investment and taking a "deep-dive" into it to bring it to life. This unique book takes the reader on a journey from first principles to detailed practical application. This book examines the policy context and asks why social investment has only recently become so popular, when in reality this is a very old concept. This is linked to the agenda of making charities more "business-like", set against the changing face of investment, as charities can no longer rely on donations and grants as guaranteed income. The work they do is more important than ever and social investment, used with care, offers a new opportunity that is further explored in this text. Mark Salway, Paul Palmer, Peter Grant and Jim Clifford will help readers understand how a small amount of borrowing, or a different business model focused away from grants and donations, could be transformational for the non-profit sector.

Download or read book Demystifying Wall Street written by Bruce Fleet and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book that Wall Street doesn't want you to read. It's a book about my experiences, my insights, and my take on the brokerage business. As a top-producing Wall Street stockbroker for 20 years at some of its largest firms, I had the opportunity to see everything the junkets, the incentives, the sales strategies, the product preferences, and most of all how customers are treated. Demystifying Wall Street begins with some of my personal experiences, how I went from being a car salesman (and musician) to joining one of Wall Street's biggest brokerages. And then it explains how I discovered that car dealerships and brokerages operate in very much the same way: by incentives. More compelling, the book reveals a perspective that is often lost on consumers: Salesmen, whether of stocks or cars, are paid to sell products. They work, at the end of the day, for the manufacturers of those products and therefore their interests are never aligned with buyers. Those buyers on Wall Street are you. This is the flaw in the Wall Street business model that is at the crux of Demystifying Wall Street. Despite the bull, the advertisements, and all of the lip service, stockbrokers can never be the trusted advisers they portend to be. If they were, and put clients' interests ahead of their own, they'd be broke. Yet, the average income of stockbrokers is several hundred thousand dollars and can stretch up into millions of dollars. I explain how this then translates into a lifestyle trap for Wall Street stockbrokers, how they have to produce, produce, produce, to keep up their means. It shows how bigger and better EVERYTHING is rewarded by brokerage firm management. Managers want brokers to get nicer cars, buy bigger houses. They hold out carrots at the office too corner offices, secretaries, and trips all in a design to keep brokers in the firm's nest. Rife with information, including charts, tables, and graphs, Demystifying Wall Street is meant to be used as resource guide, a resource guide, mind you, that tells a story. My personal experiences and anecdotes are meant to grab readers' attention and engage them. But the book itself is full of easy-to-understand financial lessons.

Book Demystifying China s Innovation Machine

Download or read book Demystifying China s Innovation Machine written by Marina Zhang and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's extraordinary economic development is explained in large part by the way it innovates. Contrary to widely held views, China's innovation machine is not created and controlled by an all-powerful government. Instead, it is a complex, interdependent system composed of various elements, involving bottom-up innovation driven by innovators and entrepreneurs and highly pragmatic and adaptive top-down policy. Using case studies of leading firms and industries, along with statistics and policy analysis, this book argues that China's innovation machine is similar to a natural ecosystem. Innovations in technology, organization, and business models resemble genetic mutations which are initially random, self-serving, and isolated, but the best fitting are selected by the market and their impacts are amplified by the innovation machine. This machine draws on China's multitude manufacturers, supply chains, innovation clusters, and digitally literate population, connected through super-sized digital platforms. China's innovation suffers from a lack of basic research and reliance upon certain critical technologies from overseas, yet its scale (size) and scope (diversity) possess attributes that make it self-correcting and stronger in the face of challenges. China's innovation machine is most effective in a policy environment where the market prevails; policy intervention plays a significant role when market mechanisms are premature or fail. The future success of China's innovation will depend on continuing policy pragmatism, mass innovation, and entrepreneurship, and the development of the 'new infrastructures'.

Book NBER Macroeconomics Annual 2015

Download or read book NBER Macroeconomics Annual 2015 written by Martin Eichenbaum and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year, the NBER Macroeconomics Annual celebrates its thirtieth volume. The first two papers examine China’s macroeconomic development. “Trends and Cycles in China's Macroeconomy” by Chun Chang, Kaiji Chen, Daniel F. Waggoner, and Tao Zha outlines the key characteristics of growth and business cycles in China. “Demystifying the Chinese Housing Boom” by Hanming Fang, Quanlin Gu, Wei Xiong, and Li-An Zhou constructs a new house price index, showing that Chinese house prices have grown by ten percent per year over the past decade. The third paper, “External and Public Debt Crises” by Cristina Arellano, Andrew Atkeson, and Mark Wright, asks why there appear to be large differences across countries and subnational jurisdictions in the effect of rising public debts on economic outcomes. The fourth, “Networks and the Macroeconomy: An Empirical Exploration” by Daron Acemoglu, Ufuk Akcigit, and William Kerr, explains how the network structure of the US economy propagates the effect of gross output productivity shocks across upstream and downstream sectors. The fifth and sixth papers investigate the usefulness of surveys of household’s beliefs for understanding economic phenomena. “Expectations and Investment,” by Nicola Gennaioli, Yueran Ma, and Andrei Shleifer, demonstrates that a chief financial officer's expectations of a firm's future earnings growth is related to both the planned and actual future investment of that firm. “Declining Desire to Work and Downward Trends in Unemployment and Participation” by Regis Barnichon and Andrew Figura shows that an increasing number of prime-age Americans who are not in the labor force report no desire to work and that this decline accelerated during the second half of the 1990s.
