Current problems include: poor drainage, thaw degradation, narrow usable road width (1 land only), poor gradation of surfacing that is slippery when wet, snowdrift accumulation in shallow cuts, two awkward ferry crossings (roll on, reverse off), requirement for two winter ice bridges creating temporary loss of access during freeze up and spring thaw, road potentially incapable of sustaining heavy truck traffic loads with increasing volume for the future without major maintenance upgrading cost. Yukon Territory Section: The minimum upgrading investment required to provide a safe all weather two-way road is $37.5 million in 1981 order of magnitude costs. Current problems include: poor drainage, thaw degradation, lack of adequate surfacing causing extremely harsh ride over boulder rock fills, river erosion of fills and lack of adequate protection, snowdrift accumulation in shallow cuts, 74 km of curvilinear narrow road alignment (km 44 YT to km 118 YT), 6 temporary single land bridges to be replaced, road potentially incapable of sustaining heavy truck traffic loads with increasing volume in the future without a major maintenance upgrading cost"--Leaves 1-2.

Book excerpt: The impact of improper culvert design and effects on the hydrology and fish biology of Frog Creek, N.W.T. are discussed. Fish migration discharge design, as required by Fisheries and Marine Service for northern highway culverts, is defined. Bank erosion downstream from the culvert caused retreat of the river bank at a rate of 15 cm per day. Siltation of the stream resulting from construction was evident, but apperaed to be insignificant. High water velocities within the culvert blocked the spawning migration of approximately 600 northern pike and appeared to block movements of some broad whitefish. It was estimated that only a small proportion of the total pike population of the Frog Creek drainage was blocked by the culvert. No physiological effects of the culvert delay on ripe pike were evident.
