Written for all analytical scientists but particularly thoseinvolved in atomic spectroscopy and in environmental, geochemical, clinical or food analysis, this timely and informative book will bean essential reference in their use of inductively coupled plasmasto achieve their own scientific goals.

Book A Comparison of Continuous Pneumatic Nebulization and Flow Injection direct Injection Nebulization for Sample Introduction in Inductively Coupled Plasma mass Spectrometry

Download or read book A Comparison of Continuous Pneumatic Nebulization and Flow Injection direct Injection Nebulization for Sample Introduction in Inductively Coupled Plasma mass Spectrometry written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dilute nitric acid blanks and solutions containing Ni, Cd, Pb, and U (including two laboratory waste samples) were analyzed eighteen times over a two-month period using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Two different sample introduction techniques were employed: flow injection-direct injection nebulization (FI-DIN) and continuous pneumatic nebulization (CPN). Using comparable instrumental measurement procedures, FI-DIN analyses were 33% faster and generated 52% less waste than CPN analyses. Instrumental limits of detection obtained with FI-DIN and CPN were comparable but not equivalent (except in the case of Pb) because of nebulizer-related differences in sensitivity (i.e., signal per unit analyte concentration) and background. Substantial and statistically significant differences were found between FI-DIN and CPN Ni determinations, and in the case of the laboratory waste samples, there were also small but statistically significant differences between Cd determinations. These small (2 to 3%) differences were not related to polyatomic ion interference (e.g., 95Mo16O), but in light of the time savings and waste reduction to be realized, they should not preclude the use of FI-DIN in place of CPN for determination of Cd, Pb, U and chemically.

Book Liquid Sample Introduction in ICP Spectrometry

Download or read book Liquid Sample Introduction in ICP Spectrometry written by José-Luis Todoli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inductively coupled plasma atomic or mass spectrometry is one of the most common techniques for elemental analysis. Samples to be analyzed are usually in the form of solutions and need to be introduced into the plasma by means of a sample introduction system, so as to obtain a mist of very fine droplets. Because the sample introduction system can be a limiting factor in the analytical performance, it is crucial to optimize its design and its use. It is the purpose of this book to provide fundamental knowledge along with practical instructions to obtain the best out of the technique. - Fundamental as well as practical character - Troubleshooting section - Flow charts with optimum systems to be used for a given application

Book Jet impact Nebulization for Sample Introduction in Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry

Download or read book Jet impact Nebulization for Sample Introduction in Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry written by Michael P. Doherty and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel, simple device for the production of liquid aerosol has been constructured and evaluated. In operation of this device, a sample solution is forced under pneumatic or mechanical pressure through an orifice of 25-60 micrometers in diameter. The resulting high-velocity stream of solution is directed onto a solid surface, thereby generating a fine aerosol. Details of nebulizer construction and operation are discussed and factors affecting nebulizer performance are examined. The utility of this nebulizer as a sample-introduction device for inductively coupled plasma spectrometry is explored. When coupled with an ICP, the jet-impact nebulizer compares favorably with a conventional pneumatic nebulizer in terms of precision, linearity, detection limits, and efficiency. Moreover, aerosol production is independent of any gas flow, making the device potentially useful in low-gas-flow plasmas. However, clogging of the nebulizer orifice with particulate matter can be a problem unless solutions are pre-filtered. (Author).

Book Sample Introduction Using the Hildebrand Grid Nebulizer for Plasma Spectrometry

Download or read book Sample Introduction Using the Hildebrand Grid Nebulizer for Plasma Spectrometry written by Timothy J. Brotherton and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hildebrand grid nebulizer is evaluated for use with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS) detection. Limiting aspiration rates for various organic solvents were determined for the grid nebulizer with a mini-pyrex spray chamber, a cooled spray chamber and a conical spray chamber. Detection limits and linear dynamic ranges were determined for various species. Indirect solvent transport efficiencies were determined as a function of spray chamber, flow rate, temperature and solvent. A comparison was made between the grid, cross-flow, concentric and glass frit. Three interfaces for volatile organic solvents used to couple Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) with ICP-OES detection were evaluated. Detection limits, linear dynamic ranges, precision, and peak width were determined for elements in methanol and acetonitrile solutions. Theses. (mjm).

Book Discrete Sample Introduction Techniques for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Discrete Sample Introduction Techniques for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry written by D. Beauchemin and published by Elsevier Science. This book was released on 2000 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book starts with a detailed description of ICP-MS, including quadruple-based, sector-based and time-of-flight instruments. Instrumentation from existing manufacturers is described and compared to show their similarities and differences. Also, a review of the ICP-MS literature is carried out to outline both the strengths and limitations of the technique, whatever its brand, as well as what it can currently accomplish in terms of applications. Then, the book demonstrates how these limitations can be reduced and/or eliminated by combining various techniques with ICP-MS. Great detail is provided on each technique so that the reader can get a good understanding of it before carrying on to the instrumental requirements for its hyphenation to ICP-MS, and the resulting impact on the operation of the hyphenated instrument. Since this book is concerned with the ICP side only, which is fairly similar in all the instruments from the different manufacturers, the information should be useful to all ICP-MS users. The features and limitations of each technique are thoroughly discussed and illustrated with a review of the ICP-MS literature. Approaches which could be used but have not yet been tried with ICP-MS are also suggested. This is particularly true of flow injection techniques which are extremely flexible and have been used extensively in atomic spectroscopy and spectrophotometry. Many of the features of the technique have not yet been combined to ICP-MS, and one purpose of the book will be to point out potentially beneficial combinations.
