Book Demonstration of Wavelet Techniques in the Spectral Analysis of Bypass Transition Data

Download or read book Demonstration of Wavelet Techniques in the Spectral Analysis of Bypass Transition Data written by Jacques Lewalle and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of wavelet-based techniques for the analysis of experimental data are developed and illustrated. A multiscale analysis based on the Mexican hat wavelet is demonstrated as a tool for acquiring physical and quantitative information not obtainable by standard signal analysis methods. Experimental data for the analysis came from simultaneous hot-wire velocity traces in a bypass transition of the boundary layer on a heated flat plate. A pair of traces (two components of velocity) at one location was excerpted. A number of ensemble and conditional statistics related to dominant time scales for energy and momentum transport were calculated. The analysis revealed a lack of energy-dominant time scales inside turbulent spots but identified transport-dominant scales inside spots that account for the largest part of the Reynolds stress. Momentum transport was much more intermittent than were energetic fluctuations. This work is the first step in a continuing study of the spatial evolution of these scale-related statistics, the goal being to apply the multiscale analysis results to improve the modelling of transitional and turbulent industrial flows.

Book excerpt: The idea of "e;ondelettes"e; or "e;wavelets"e; started from the investigation of time-frequency signal analysis, wave engendering, and examining hypothesis. One of the principle explanations behind the disclosure of wavelets and wavelet changes is that the Fourier change analysis does not contain the neighborhood data of signals. So the Fourier change can't be utilized for examining signals in a joint time and frequency area. In 1982, Jean MorIet, in a joint effort with a gathering of French designers, first presented the possibility of wavelets as a group of capacities built by utilizing interpretation and expansion of a solitary capacity, called the mother wavelet, for the analysis of nonstationary signals. Wavelet analysis is an energizing new technique for taking care of troublesome issues in science, material science, and building, with present day applications as various as wave spread, information pressure, picture preparing, design acknowledgment, PC illustrations, the location of air ship and submarines, and change in CAT filters and other restorative picture innovation. Wavelets permit complex data, for example, music, discourse, pictures, and examples to be deteriorated into basic structures, called the central building hinders, at various positions and scales and in this manner remade with high accuracy.

Book excerpt: This long-awaited update of Meyer's Wavelets : algorithms and applications includes completely new chapters on four topics: wavelets and the study of turbulence, wavelets and fractals (which includes an analysis of Riemann's nondifferentiable function), data compression, and wavelets in astronomy. The chapter on data compression was the original motivation for this revised edition, and it contains up-to-date information on the interplay between wavelets and nonlinear approximation. The other chapters have been rewritten with comments, references, historical notes, and new material. Four appendices have been added: a primer on filters, key results (with proofs) about the wavelet transform, a complete discussion of a counterexample to the Marr-Mallat conjecture on zero-crossings, and a brief introduction to Hölder and Besov spaces. In addition, all of the figures have been redrawn, and the references have been expanded to a comprehensive list of over 260 entries. The book includes several new results that have not appeared elsewhere.

Book Wavelet Transforms and Time Frequency Signal Analysis

Download or read book Wavelet Transforms and Time Frequency Signal Analysis written by Lokenath Debnath and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-02-08 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last fifteen years have produced major advances in the mathematical theory of wavelet transforms and their applications to science and engineering. In an effort to inform researchers in mathematics, physics, statistics, computer science, and engineering and to stimulate furtherresearch, an NSF-CBMS Research Conference on Wavelet Analysis was organized at the University of Central Florida in May 1998. Many distinguished mathematicians and scientists from allover the world participated in the conference and provided a digest of recent developments, open questions, and unsolved problems in this rapidly growing and important field. As a follow-up project, this monograph was developed from manuscripts sub mitted by renowned mathematicians and scientists who have made important contributions to the subject of wavelets, wavelet transforms, and time-frequency signal analysis. This publication brings together current developments in the theory and applications of wavelet transforms and in the field of time-frequency signal analysis that are likely to determine fruitful directions for future advanced study and research.

Book Spectral Analysis Techniques Using Wavelets as an Alternative to Fourier Analysis for Transient Dynamic Data

Download or read book Spectral Analysis Techniques Using Wavelets as an Alternative to Fourier Analysis for Transient Dynamic Data written by Kenneth R. Kimble and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various dynamic data analysis tools for one-dimensional time-domain signals are employed to determine the frequency content of a signal for mechanical analysis. When tied to the fundamental frequency of the various components comprising the machinery being evaluated, this information gives an indication of the state or health of the machine. Current techniques for evaluating dynamic data for potential mechanical problems are primarily centered around the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and the Shon Time Fourier Transform (STFT). However, the use of Fourier analysis for frequency component extraction is restricted to bandlimited stationary signals. Because of the stationary requirement, small transients may not be detected due to a smoothing effect of the FFT, or the FFT spectrum may be smeared due to frequency ramping and abrupt incidents or discontinuities in the signal. Various techniques have been employed to overcome the limitations of the FFT for non-stationary data. These techniques include windowed Fourier analysis (including the STFT) and a background in wavelet theory based upon the analyzing function basis approach so that wavelet theory may be contrasted against Fourier analysis. A model signal with stationary and transient characteristics is developed to permit comparisons of various analysis techniques based upon a known analytic signal which resembles a real vibration signal. Some applications of wavelets to other transient signals are also provided. (AN).

Book Advances in Turbulence V

Download or read book Advances in Turbulence V written by Roberto Benzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the auspices of the Euromech Committee, the Fifth European Turbulence Conference was held in Siena on 5-8 July 1994. Following the previous ETC meeting in Lyon (1986), Berlin (1988), Stockholm (1990) and Delft (1992), the Fifth ETC was aimed at providing a review of the fundamental aspects of turbulence from a theoretical, numerical and experimental point of view. In the magnificent town of Siena, more than 250 scientists from all over the world, spent four days discussing new ideas on turbulence. As a research worker in the field of turbulence, I must say that the works presented at the Conference, on which this book is based, covered almost all areas in this field. I also think that this book provides a major opportunity to have a complete overview of the most recent research works. I am extremely grateful to Prof. C. Cercignani, Dr. M. Loffredo, and Prof. R. Piva who, as members of the local organizing committee, share the success of the Conference. I also want to thank Mrs. Liu' Catena, for her invaluable contribution to the work done by the local organizing committee and the European Turbulence Committee in the scientific organization of the meeting. The "Servizio Congressi" of the University of Siena provided perfect organization in Siena and wonderful hospitality. The Conference has been supported by CNR, Cira, Alenia, the Universities of Rome "Tor Vergata" and "La Sapienza".
