Book Demonstration of TRAF NETSIM for Traffic Operations Management

Download or read book Demonstration of TRAF NETSIM for Traffic Operations Management written by Joan D. Sulzberg and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The utility of the simulation package TRAF-NETSIM to the traffic engineer is assessed and demonstrated by means of a case study. The methodology employed in performing the analysis is presented in a way that will aid future users of TRAF-NETSIM. The advantages and disadvantages ofTRAF-NETSIM are documented along with the human resource requirements for a first-time application of the program. TRAF-NETS1M permits the engineer to compare alternative control and design strategies for a traffic intersection, corridor, or network and allows the user to design and test within the office environment the simulation of many traffic options. TRAF-NETSIM attempts to be as realistic as possible. Lanes can be channelized for turns only or designated for carpool or bus activity: Pedestrian activity, long- and short-term events, and bus routes can be simulated as well. Creativity permits the engineer to evaluate unusual networks when required. The output ofTRAF-NETSIM provides the user with a host of measures of effectiveness to compare traffic options. Delay time/vehicle, number of phase failures, speed, vehicle miles, stops/vehicle trip are some of the measures of effectiveness that can be used to evaluate networks.

Book Integrated Traffic Simulation Model Phase I

Download or read book Integrated Traffic Simulation Model Phase I written by E. Lieberman and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Executive summary: This document presents a summary description of the work effort performed and of the end-product produced under the subject contract. It is written for a general audience and is oriented toward both administrative and technical personnel. This report contains three sections: 1) An introduction which reviews the utility of traffic simulation and its role as a key element in the transportation management process. The need for an integrated traffic simulation model is discussed and, finally, the objectives of the TRAF system are stated. 2) The conceptual design of TRAF is presented. Two components of the TRAF software system are identified and discussed: a) The TRAF Integrated Model and b) The TRAF Operating System. 3) A brief summary of the other volumes is presented. This volume is the first in a series of five. The others are: Vol. 2 80/087 Design of the TRAF Operating System (TOS); Vol. 3 80/088 TRAF Operating System Users Guide; Vol. 4 80/089 Revisions to UTCS-1 Traffic Simulation Model to Enhance Operational Efficiency; and Vol. 5 80/090 TRAF Operating Systems Program Documentation.

Book Managing Technology Transfer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB Special Report 256 - Managing Technology Transfer: A Strategy for the Federal Highway Administration addresses how the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration selects research products for technology transfer and transfers those products to the highway industry, in particular the state and local agencies that own, operate, and maintain the nation’s highways.

Book A Tool to Aid the Comparison of Improvement Projects for the Virginia Department of Transportation

Download or read book A Tool to Aid the Comparison of Improvement Projects for the Virginia Department of Transportation written by Yacov Y. Haimes and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this effort is to assist the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in improving the comparison in planning of potential primary and secondary roadway improvement projects. Historical projects that have been implemented or considered for implementation have been used as a case study data set. Methods are proposed for estimating cost, performance gain and crash risk reduction of future roadway projects, with the main focus being the presentation of trade offs among these criteria. If, in a particular case, more accurate and/or appropriate data is available for one or more of these criteria (e.g. from a simulation study that has been performed), then this information can easily be used to supplement or replace the estimations proposed here. The project comparison instrument combines three major decision making attributes in project selection: crash risk, performance, and project cost. By quantifying these attributes across a number of proposed highway improvement projects, projects can more readily be compared to one another, and a more holistic view of potential projects is achieved. This is an important step when choosing a portfolio of projects each year. In order to compare projects, attributes are quantified in the following manner for planning level decisions. Crash risk reduction is calculated as the number of crashes avoided per year at the project site. Particular roadway improvements are typically assumed to decrease the expected number of crashes by a statistically determined and pretabulated percentage. Performance gain is quantified by the vehicle minutes of travel time avoided in the peak hour. Finally, cost is modeled as the sum of preliminary engineering, right of way and construction costs. Once the objectives are quantified, they can be graphically displayed in a Project Comparison Chart. Examples for applying this approach are given in the text and in the accompanying workbook.
