The first Hugo Award winner for best novel in 1953. “One of the all-time classics of science fiction.”—Isaac Asimov “Bester's two superb books have stood the test of time. For nearly sixty years they’ve held their place on everybody’s list of the ten greatest sf novels” —Robert Silverberg In a world policed by telepaths, Ben Reich plans to commit a crime that hasn’t been heard of in 70 years: murder. That’s the only option left for Reich, whose company is losing a 10-year death struggle with rival D’Courtney Enterprises. Terrorized in his dreams by The Man With No Face and driven to the edge after D’Courtney refuses a merger offer, Reich murders his rival and bribes a high-ranking telepath to help him cover his tracks. But while police prefect Lincoln Powell knows Reich is guilty, his telepath's knowledge is a far cry from admissible evidence. Alfred Bester was among the first important authors of contemporary science fiction. His passionate novels of worldly adventure, high intellect, and tremendous verve, The Stars My Destination and the Hugo Award winning The Demolished Man, established Bester as a s.f. grandmaster, a reputation that was ratified by the Science Fiction Writers of America shortly before his death. Bester also was an acclaimed journalist for Holiday magazine, a reviewer for the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and even a writer for Superman.

Book excerpt: "The first definitive biography of the now-famous architect, Hugh Morrison's Louis Sullivan: Prophet of Modern Architecture is still the best introduction to his work. This reissue provides Morrison's original text and illustrations in a larger, more modern format. It also offers an assessment of Morrison's ground-breaking research, in Timothy J. Samuelson's Introduction, and, most important, an authoritative revision of the chronological List of Buildings, including corrections of the data in light of six decades of research. Working from Morrison's original notes, Samuelson has restored a number of photographic images intended for the original edition and has replaced some photographs with alternate images that more accurately represent the buildings. He has also added a selected bibliography of important works about Sullivan"--Page 4 of cover

Book Roath Splott and Adamsdown One Thousand Years of History

Download or read book Roath Splott and Adamsdown One Thousand Years of History written by Jeff Childs and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 250 old photographs, many published for the first time, appear in this new collection covering the districts of Roath, Splott and Adamsdown. This area, along with Penylan, Tremorfa and part of Cathays, once had a collective unity as the ecclesiastical parish of Roath created in the late sixteenth century. Roath as an historical entity is much older, however. Reputed to be pre-Norman in origin, in its time it has served as a manor, parish and village as well as a latter-day Cardiff suburb. Although earlier centuries are not neglected, particular focus is given to the period 1890 to 1950, which saw the emergence and maturity of these communities so familiar to present-day Cardiffians. Scenes of streetlife, work, worship and leisure are captured in a wide variety of often striking and atmospheric images. These are amplified by the fascinating historical detail in the captions providing the reader with a vivid appreciation of the richly significant past of this part of Cardiff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Richard Nickel, whom I had the delight of knowing during hisall too brief life, is one of the unsung heroes of Chicagoarchitecture. He was not an architect himself, nor a designer. Hesimply took pictures, but what pictures! He was, for want of abetter description, one of the most sensitive of architecturalphotographers. More than that, his life--and ironically, tragically and poetically, his death--were fused to Chicagoarchitecture. How he died tells us how he lived: for the beauty inthe works of Sullivan, Wright and the others. His story is one thatmust be told." --Studs Terkel, author "He was completely understanding of architecture and genius andof the quality of the work he was dealing with. He wassingle-minded in his pursuit and dedication to quality in history, art and architecture. That is an increasingly rare quality." --Ada Louise Huxtable, former New York Timesarchitecture critic "Richard was an excellent photographer--sensitive andintelligent, and a very good craftsman". --John Szarkowski, former Director, Photography, Museumof Modern Art, New York "Richard Nickel was one of those who saw architecture, and whopassionately and skillfully pursued its portrayal. He was one of avery small number, and to make his work known would be afundamental service to architects, students, and teachers as wellas to the art of architecture." --Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., architectural historian

Book Architecture and Town Planning in Colonial North America

Download or read book Architecture and Town Planning in Colonial North America written by James D. Kornwolf and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating more than 3,000 illustrations, Kornwolf's work conveys the full range of the colonial encounter with the continent's geography, from the high forms of architecture through formal landscape design and town planning. From these pages emerge the fine arts of environmental design, an understanding of the political and economic events that helped to determine settlement in North America, an appreciation of the various architectural and landscape forms that the settlers created, and an awareness of the diversity of the continent's geography and its peoples. Considering the humblest buildings along with the mansions of the wealthy and powerful, public buildings, forts, and churches, Kornwolf captures the true dynamism and diversity of colonial communities - their rivalries and frictions, their outlooks and attitudes - as they extended their hold on the land.

Book Towards a Sustainable Northern European Housing Stock

Download or read book Towards a Sustainable Northern European Housing Stock written by L. Itard and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never were energy use and security of energy supply as high on the international political agendas as they are now. There seems to be a consensus that energy savings and sustainable energy production must have a high priority. Because the energy use in the residential and non-residential sectors account for a large part of the total energy use, new programs are being developed in order to limit the consumption of energy in these sectors and a lot of attention is put into increasing the energy efficiency of the existing building stock. Towards a Sustainable Northern European Housing Stock is based on a search and inventory of data on the existing Northern-European building stock and related policy developments. In this book, the authors try to give a realistic image of what is really known about the current quality of the building stock, the type of renovation activities that are undertaken and the policies being currently implemented. Recommendations are also made on how to improve the present situation.
