Download or read book The Handbook of Dewey s Educational Theory and Practice written by Charles L. Lowery and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last twenty-five years there has been a great deal of scholarship about John Dewey’s work, as well as continued appraisal of his relevance for our time, especially in his contributions to pragmatism and progressivism in teaching, learning, and school learning. The Handbook of Dewey’s Educational Theory and Practice provides a comprehensive, accessible, richly theoretical yet practical guide to the educational theories, ideals, and pragmatic implications of the work of John Dewey, America’s preeminent philosopher of education. Edited by a multidisciplinary team with a wide range of perspectives and experience, this volume will serve as a state-of-the-art reference to the hugely consequential implications of Dewey’s work for education and schooling in the 21st century. Organized around a series of concentric circles ranging from the purposes of education to appropriate policies, principles of schooling at the organizational and administrative level, and pedagogical practice in Deweyan classrooms, the chapters will connect Dewey’s theoretical ideas to their pragmatic implications.

In Germany, the art of civics education is constantly being reconsidered and revised, in part because of the country’s history and the widespread awareness in German society of the dangers posed by education failing to do its job. Book Intention is not method belief is not evidence

Download or read book Intention is not method belief is not evidence written by Dr. Antje Gansewig and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-21 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 20 years, school interventions involving former right-wing extremists have been popular in Germany. In practice, they are advertised and conducted as both civic education and extremism prevention. This book uses an evidence-based and interdisciplinary approach to examine the potentials and challenges of this format. It provides a thematic embedding of German application, a comprehensive review of attributed impact assumptions and the state of related research. Furthermore, this research offers highly valuable, unique and comprehensive insights based on empirical evidence. It thus contributes to a better understanding of the format and its complexity. Overall, the findings give no clear indication that the involvement of former right-wing extremists in schools initiate civic education processes or prevent political extremism. Rather, the investigation found fundamental needs for additional research, modification, and sensitization. In this vein, this book makes a pioneer contribution to quality assurance and evaluation research in civic education and extremism prevention.

Book Civic Engagement as an Educational Goal

Download or read book Civic Engagement as an Educational Goal written by Bertelsmann Stiftung and published by Verlag Bertelsmann Stiftung. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern democratic society depends on the civic engagement of its citizens. Growing cultural pluralism and economic globalization have brought greater complexity to all areas of life. Young people in particular need diverse opportunities in order to enrich their experience, to learn about civic responsibility and to strengthen their communities. Furthermore, the topic is important since it shapes a path to overcome social inequalities in education and to use the untapped potential for-and declining interest in-political participation among youth. With the 2007 Carl Bertelsmann Prize for Civic Engagement as an Educational Goal the Bertelsmann Stiftung presents approaches in diverse countries and discusses how they meet the challenge to promote civic engagement in schools and early childhood education and care. The report also gives a short overview of the status quo of civic engagement in Germany and suggests some reforms for the future.

Book Raising Citizens in the Century of the Child

Download or read book Raising Citizens in the Century of the Child written by Dirk Schumann and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 20th century, declared at its start to be the “Century of the Child” by Swedish author Ellen Key, saw an unprecedented expansion of state activity in and expert knowledge on child-rearing on both sides of the Atlantic. Children were seen as a crucial national resource whose care could not be left to families alone. However, the exact scope and degree of state intervention and expert influence as well as the rights and roles of mothers and fathers remained subjects of heated debates throughout the century. While there is a growing scholarly interest in the history of childhood, research in the field remains focused on national narratives. This volume compares the impact of state intervention and expert influence on theories and practices of raising children in the U.S. and German Central Europe. In particular, the contributors focus on institutions such as kindergartens and schools where the private and the public spheres intersected, on notions of “race” and “ethnicity,” “normality” and “deviance,” and on the impact of wars and changes in political regimes.

Book Political Transformations and Teacher Education Programs

Download or read book Political Transformations and Teacher Education Programs written by Miriam Ben-Peretz and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political transformations have a decisive power to shape education systems in general and teacher education programs in particular. How these processes unfold is especially interesting in educational systems which are not generally known to Anglo-Saxon educators, like Germany, Russia, or China. Several chapters in this volume discuss the impact of statewide political transformation on teacher education programs. Political transformation is one of the important features of societies in the second half of the 20th century. Political transformations and changing ideologies are part of the history of teaching and teacher education. It is important to be aware of this process in order to keep the accumulated experience of the teaching profession alive and contribute to present day education policy and practice. Bringing ideological-political perspectives to bear on teacher education can deepen our understanding of the relation between society and teacher education. Moreover, it highlights the pivotal role that teachers play in any society. This volume presents different ways of analyzing teacher education programs through the lens of different ideologies and the influence of societal transformations.
