Book Population Analysis and Modeling of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd with Comparisons to Other Alaskan Rangifer Populations

Download or read book Population Analysis and Modeling of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd with Comparisons to Other Alaskan Rangifer Populations written by Joseph G. Doerr and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters thesis. The population dynamics of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd in northwest Alaska were examined with particular reference to the pronounced decline of the herd between 1970-76. After comparisons of population data from other caribou herds were made a model for analyzing and predicting population trends was developed.

Download or read book Reindeer and Caribou written by Morten Tryland and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive presentation of health and diseases in reindeer and caribou, or just Rangifer, a key Circumarctic species with broad social and ecological value. It is an essential reference for anyone interested in the biology and health of wild or semi-domesticated reindeer and caribou, and is more broadly relevant for those with interests in other species of free-ranging and captive cervids. Beginning with a general introduction to Rangifer as a species, it then focuses on Rangifer "health" as a concept and describes the determinants of health at an individual and population level. Chapters cover a range of topics from nutrition and feeding to stress, non-infectious and infectious diseases, meat hygiene, capture and restraint, diagnosis and treatment of health issues, and finally, potential impacts of climate change on health of Rangifer. Reindeer and Caribou: Health and Disease compiles extensive research and experience-based information on issues ranging from drug doses for chemical immobilization, blood chemistry values, and raising an orphaned calf. In addition, it contains hundreds of high quality colour illustrations that contribute to its value as a diagnostic resource for recognizing various parasites, pathogens and signs of disease, both in live and dead animals. Each chapter is followed by a comprehensive list of references and a list of contact information for all the contributors, identifying world experts in the different areas of health for this circumpolar and fascinating species. This book is compulsory reading and an indispensable resource for anyone dealing with health in reindeer and caribou, including veterinarians, wildlife biologists and managers, reindeer herders/game ranchers, zoological husbandry personnel, and students with wildlife health.

Book A Faunal Review of Aleocharine Beetles in the Rapidly Changing Arctic and Subarctic Regions of North America Coleoptera Staphylinidae

Download or read book A Faunal Review of Aleocharine Beetles in the Rapidly Changing Arctic and Subarctic Regions of North America Coleoptera Staphylinidae written by Jan Klimaszewski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-27 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arctic and Subarctic North America is particularly affected by climate change, where average temperatures are rising three times faster than the global average. Documenting the changing climate/environment of the north requires a structured knowledge of indicator taxa that reflect the effects of climate changes.Aleocharine beetles are a dominant group of forest insects, which are being used in many projects as indicators of environmental change. Many species are forest specialists restricted to certain microhabitats, some are generalists and others are open habitat specialists. They represent many ecological niches and, as such, are good indicators for many other species as well. The majority of Canadian aleocharine beetle species (about 600 spp.) has been studied and published by Jan Klimaszewski et al. (2018, 2020), mainly from southern, central, and western Canada, while the northern taxa remain poorly known and documented. The aim of the present book is to summarize the knowledge on this insect group in the Arctic and Subarctic North America and to provide a diagnostic and ecological tool for scientists studying and monitoring insects in northern Canada and Alaska. The book includes a review of the literature, information on 238 species and their habitats, taxonomic review, images, and identification tools.
