Population size and structure are crucial factors affecting opportunities, pressures, and constraints of society. The high fertility and rapid population growth in low-resource countries have hampered socio-economic development. However, as fertility began to fall rapidly since the middle of the 20th century, many post-demographic-transition countries are undergoing rapid population ageing and encountering labour shortages Sabah is the second-most populous state in Malaysia, with about 4 million population in 2020. It has registered the second-highest population growth rate over the past four decades, brought about by the influx of migrant workers due to the severe labour shortage. The number of non-citizens grew from 420 thousand in 1990 to 1.094 million in 2020. Non-citizens made up close to 30% of the state population during 2013 – 2018, up from around 26% in 2009 – 2010. However, the negative growth of the non-citizens in Sabah during 2018 – 2020 has resulted in zero growth of the state population. This book is a sequel to the series on “Revisiting Population- Development Nexus: The Past in Its Future, 2016”, and “Demographic Transition and Socio-economic Development in Malaysia, 2020”by the Universiti Malaysia Press. Given Sabah’s unique socio-demographic situation, this book will provide a comprehensive analysis of the demographic situation, emphasizing the young generation and the changing roles and status of women in Sabah. The book consists of 14 chapters, covering population situation analysis at the state and district levels; functional population projection; gender differentials in education, employment, and income; internal and international migration; marriage; fertility and fertility preferences; family planning; family and gender roles; youth in development; adolescent sexual and reproductive health; women and youth in the hotel industry; and growth of the non-citizen population. The performance of former European and American colonies (Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, and the Philippines) has been less impressive. Some scholars have attributed the difference to better infrastructure and greater access to education in Japan’s colonies. Anne Booth examines and critiques such arguments in this ambitious comparative study of economic development in East and Southeast Asia from the beginning of the twentieth century until the 1960s. Booth takes an in-depth look at the nature and consequences of colonial policies for a wide range of factors, including the growth of export-oriented agriculture and the development of manufacturing industry. She evaluates the impact of colonial policies on the growth and diversification of the market economy and on the welfare of indigenous populations. Rather than focusing on the metric of achieving independence, the project evaluates the quality of societies after independence, including such elements as economic strength and political resilience, and it analyzes what factors contribute to different outcomes. The study finds that the single most determinative factor in the success of any independence movement is frequently beyond the control of such a movement, often relating to the global and historical contexts in which the movement finds itself. However, a whole host of factors are within the control of such a movement, but movements do not always seek to act on many of them. Activists become so convinced in the justness of the independence cause that they do not focus on actions that would contribute to greater success after independence.

Increased life expectancy and lower fertility rates are changing the population structure worldwide in a major way: the proportion of older persons is rapidly increasing, a process known as population ageing. The process is inevitable and is already advanced in developed countries and progressing quite rapidly in developing ones. The 2007 Survey analyses the implications of population ageing for social and economic development around the world, while recognising that it offers both challenges and opportunities. Among the most pressing issues is that arising from the prospect of a smaller labour force having to support an increasingly larger older population. Paralleling increased longevity are the changes in intergenerational relationships that may affect the provision of care and income security for older persons, particularly in developing countries where family transfers play a major role. At the same time, it is also necessary for societies to fully recognise and better harness the productive and social contributions that older persons can make but are in many instances prevented from making. The Survey argues that the challenges are not insurmountable, but that societies everywhere need to put in place the policies required to confront those challenges effectively and to ensure an adequate standard of living for each of their members, while respecting and promoting the contribution and participation of all.

Book excerpt: Evolution in economy, technology and social institutions over time have given rise to boundaryless and Protean careers that promote mobility and self-direction in managing one’s career. This has led to the phenomenon of career change whereby individuals undertake a shift from one field of work to a completely different field of work. In career change research, career changers have been studied as a collective, singular group undergoing a similar change experience, which neglects individual differences that may contrast the experience of change from one changer to another. Furthermore, the emotional experience that accompanies a career change has been examined with a primary focus on the role of positive emotions, which overlooks the role of negative emotions in career change. Thus, this book sheds light on three key narratives of career change; Rejectors, Navigators and Seekers, that were identified in a phenomenological study of career change amongst Malaysian working adults. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 career changers across age, gender and ethnicity with a focus on how they made sense and meaning of their lived experience of career change within their environment and context. Each career change narrative was found to have different characteristics, motivations and behaviors respectively, which shaped their unique career change process. Negative emotions were also revealed as key drivers of the career change process, although each narrative expressed different types of negative emotions.Finally, the book also introduces an adaptive perspective to career development by way of the Adaptive Career Construal Model (ACCM) which was proposed based on the continuous bi-directional relationship between career decisions and career outcomes.
