Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If California were its own country, it would have the world's fifth largest immigrant population. The way these newcomers are integrated into the state will shape California's schools, workforce, businesses, public health, politics, and culture. In Immigrant California, leading experts in U.S. migration provide cutting-edge research on the incorporation of immigrants and their descendants in this bellwether state. California, unique for its diverse population, powerful economy, and progressive politics, provides important lessons for what to expect as demographic change comes to most states across the country. Contributors to this volume cover topics ranging from education systems to healthcare initiatives and unravel the sometimes-contradictory details of California's immigration history. By examining the past and present of immigration policy in California, the volume shows how a state that was once the national leader in anti-immigrant policies quickly became a standard-bearer of greater accommodation. California's successes, and its failures, provide an essential road map for the future prosperity of immigrants and natives alike.

Book A Portrait of Race and Ethnicity in California

Download or read book A Portrait of Race and Ethnicity in California written by Public Policy Institute of California and published by Public Policy Instit. of CA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document examines differences in socioeconomic status by racial and ethnic groups in California, exploring changing patterns over time. It analyzes trends and outcomes in demography, geographic distribution, health, education, crime, labor markets, economic status, and political participation. Data on educational outcomes include: education of mothers; English language ability; preschool activities of children ages 3 and 4; reading and math proficiency for grade 4 and 8 public school students; high school completion rates; college completion rates; and measures of basic skills in the adult population. The educational outcomes of Hispanics and African Americans are the lowest among all racial and ethnic groups. Most recent population growth has occurred among Hispanics and Asians. Most counties were predominantly White in 1970, but between 1970-98, the share of Whites declined in all but one county. African Americans have the worst health status of any group. Hispanics often have less access to health care and lower health status than Whites. Health indicators for Asians are similar to those for Whites. Nonwhites generally have lower earnings than whites. Hispanics and African Americans have particularly high unemployment rates. Asian and White family incomes are substantially higher than those for African Americans and Hispanics. The ethnic distribution of those arrested and incarcerated has shifted dramatically. The proportion of Hispanics incarcerated has risen at a faster rate than has the Hispanic proportion of the general population. African Americans experience the highest risk of arrest and incarceration and are most likely to experience violence. Whites are over-represented in the voting population. Asians and Hispanics have the lowest participation rates. An appendix presents additional sources of information. (Contains 103 bibliographic references.) (SM)

Book Social Work with Latinos

Download or read book Social Work with Latinos written by Melvin Delgado and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus on Latinos in the United States has generally overlooked key social-economic-political dimensions that are not only growing in importance, but may ultimately hold an important key to how well this group does in the immediate and distant future in the country. The approximate ten-year period since this text's initial publication has witnessed an increase in scholarship and new social-political-economic developments regarding this population group. Social Work with Latinos, Second Edition captures these advances and adds to the existing body of work in this area. In particular, this revised edition provides an up-to-date demographic profile; identifies the rewards and challenges for the development of social work interventions focused on Latinos; includes a conceptual foundation from which to develop social work strategies for outreach, engagement, service-provision, and evaluation; features a series of case illustrations to highlight how cultural competency/humility can unfold to better reach this population group; grounds the Latino experience within a social, economic, cultural, and political context; and provides recommendations for social work education, research and practice.
