Book The Failure of Political Reform in Venezuela

Download or read book The Failure of Political Reform in Venezuela written by Julia Buxton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. The victory of former lieutenant colonel Hugo Chavez in the Venezuelan presidential elections of 1998 was criticized as a blow against the country's deep-seated democratic tradition. It is claimed that this simplistic argument fails to recognize the extent of democratic deterioration in the country and the limitations imposed by discredited political actors on a meaningful democratic reform process. The book aims to break new ground in providing unseen evidence of electoral fraud and offers a fresh perspective on the nature of democratic development.

Download or read book Reinventing Legitimacy written by Damarys Canache and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1998-07-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes for an ongoing, successful democracy in Latin America? The essays in this collection emphasize the inherent dynamicism needed to sustain democratic governance. Organized around analyses of political institutions, political parties, public administration and corruption, public opinion, and continuity and change in Venezuelan politics, the essays advance the proposition that Venezuelan democracy survived recent threats because of its capacity to reform institutions and absorb new actors. The chapter authors include prominent scholars from both the United States and Venezuela, and each grapples with two related questions: What types of reforms are necessary to sustain the process of democratization? And, are actors in the Venezuelan system capable of adopting these changes? A stimulating collection for scholars and researchers dealing with Latin American politics and for those examining democratization in the developing world.

Book excerpt: The US foreign policy decisions behind six coup attempts against the Venezuelan government – and Venezuela's heightening precarity In March 2015, President Obama initiated sanctions against Venezuela, declaring a “national emergency with respect to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by the situation in Venezuela.” Each year, the US administration has repeated this claim. But, as Joe Emersberger and Justin Podur argue in their timely book, Extraordinary Threat, the opposite is true: It is the US policy of regime change in Venezuela that constitutes an “extraordinary threat” to Venezuelans. Tens of thousands of Venezuelans continue to die because of these ever-tightening US sanctions, denying people daily food, medicine, and fuel. On top of this, Venezuela has, since 2002, been subjected to repeated coup attempts by US-backed forces. In Extraordinary Threat, Emersberger and Podur tell the story of six coup attempts against Venezuela. This book deflates the myths propagated about the Venezuelan government’s purported lack of electoral legitimacy, scant human rights, and disastrous economic development record. Contrary to accounts lobbed by the corporate media, the real target of sustained U.S. assault on Venezuela is not the country’s claimed authoritarianism or its supposed corruption. It is Chavismo, the prospect that twenty-first century socialism could be brought about through electoral and constitutional means. This is what the US empire must not allow to succeed.

Book Battle for Venezuela in Challenging Nichol s Maduro

Download or read book Battle for Venezuela in Challenging Nichol s Maduro written by Marty Woolery and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle for Venezuela in challenging Nicholás Maduro In the heart of a nation reeling from economic turmoil, political strife, and social upheaval, the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election stands as a beacon of hope and a battleground of ideologies. This pivotal moment is more than just a contest between Nicolás Maduro, the embattled incumbent clinging to power, and Edmundo González, the determined diplomat rallying a fractured opposition. It is a decisive juncture that will shape the destiny of Venezuela and its people. Against a backdrop of hyperinflation, food shortages, and mass emigration, millions of Venezuelans are heading to the polls, driven by a fervent desire for change or continuity. The air is thick with anticipation and anxiety as citizens navigate long lines and the ever-present threat of violence, hoping their votes will count in a country where past elections have been marred by allegations of fraud and suppression. Nicolás Maduro, the protege of Hugo Chávez, campaigns with the resilience of a seasoned fighter, promising to defend the Bolivarian Revolution against what he deems imperialist threats. His tenure has been marked by controversy, economic collapse, and a tightening grip on power, yet his message resonates with those who see him as the guardian of Venezuela's sovereignty. Opposing him is Edmundo González, a symbol of unity for a fragmented opposition. With a vision of democratic renewal and economic recovery, González has galvanized support from diverse political factions and the international community. His promise to restore Venezuela's democratic institutions and alleviate the humanitarian crisis has ignited hope among millions, but also faces formidable obstacles. The stakes are monumental. The world watches as allied nations like Russia, China, and Cuba throw their weight behind Maduro, while the United States and European Union call for transparent, fair elections. Independent observers, though few, strive to ensure accountability amidst a climate of tension and mistrust. This election is a crossroads, where the paths of authoritarian persistence and democratic resurgence diverge. It is a story of a people yearning for stability and prosperity, of political giants clashing in a high-stakes contest, and of a nation on the cusp of transformation. As the votes are cast and the world holds its breath, the future of Venezuela hangs in the balance, poised between enduring turmoil and the promise

Download or read book Venezuela written by Damarys Canache and published by University of Miami, North/South Center Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume claims that contrary to the minimal role usually assigned to it, political support for democracy is of the greatest significance in the politics of fragile democracies. The author presents a hierarchical model of political support, with support for democracy as the capstone, using public opinion data from Venezuela as demonstration. The election of Hugo Chavez, one time leader of a coup attempt, to the presidency is seen as prima facie evidence of the weakness of Venezuela's 40-year-old democracy. Surveys carried out by the author in Venezuela suggest that those who consider Chavez influential are also those who rate low on support for democracy.
