Book Democracy and Governance in Higher Education

Download or read book Democracy and Governance in Higher Education written by Jan De Groof and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1998-02-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early Eighties a number of themes have dominated the landscape of higher education, among them budget cuts, rationalisation in provision, accountability and quality control, closer links between higher education and the region, and a greater alertness to changes in economic and social policy. At the institutional level, the drive towards a greater degree of latitude and autonomy has found a ready echo among universities and other establishments of higher education. And this, in its turn, has posed major questions about the range of responsibilities central government and administration ought to retain or to delegate. Here is an in-depth treatment of the important legal issues emerging from these developments.

Book Assembling and Governing the Higher Education Institution

Download or read book Assembling and Governing the Higher Education Institution written by Lynette Shultz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasizes the inherently democratic nature of education; from those who practice in higher education institutions and are involved in decision-making, to those questioning the methods of reform processes in those institutions. As they are faced with increasing pressures to restructure and change their organizations in line with global institutional demands the foundations upon which their leadership and governance are based are called into question. This book takes a critical approach to understanding higher education leadership and governance. The overarching questions asked in this book are: how has higher education come to be assembled in contemporary governance practices within the context of global demands for reform and how are issues of justice being taken up as part of and in resistance to this assemblage?

Book The Proper Role of Higher Education in a Democratic Society

Download or read book The Proper Role of Higher Education in a Democratic Society written by Bowhay, Vincent and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American higher education has served to prepare students to be active participants in a democratic society. During a time of great civil upheaval following the tumultuous elections of 2016 and 2020, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and mass demonstrations following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, higher education may be the only institution left to be both responsible for and responsive to society at large. Public trust in the federal government is at near-record lows, but confidence in higher education has decreased more than any other U.S. institution since 2015. In a time where public opinion is quickly changing for the better or the worse, higher education must respond to this decline in trust in it as an institution, but also the decline in the belief that a college degree is worth the time and cost. Higher education was founded on the idea that colleges would prepare citizens for a life of public service, but they have quickly changed to a business model that largely puts profits over people. Practitioners of higher education must respond to this lack of trust and the pressures of preparing a 21st century workforce while battling the threats of a pandemic, declining enrollment, budget destabilization, and increased regulation. The Proper Role of Higher Education in a Democratic Society reexamines the purpose of higher education during rapidly changing times, offers practical advice and best practices to reclaim higher education’s most fundamental mission, and argues that if higher education is called to prepare students to serve a government by the people, the people must be prepared to govern effectively. This book provides resources and suggestions for restoring the public faith in higher education by connecting the educational experience with civic engagement outcomes. Diverse perspectives presented in this book challenge traditional notions that civic engagement is handled by one office on a college campus and is only discussed during a presidential election. Covering everything from civic engagement to diversity perspectives, this book is ideal for higher education practitioners and those interested in promoting civic engagement and democratic participation, improving assessment or accreditation standards using a civic engagement perspective, and infusing civic engagement to diversity conversations on campus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shared Governance begins with the premise that today’s higher education governance practices have lost their focus and vitality. By re-examining the original suppositions of shared governance, along with an infusion of seminal democratic values and principles, a contemporary model is envisioned. From historical perspectives on shared governance, the book then takes a view of current governance models through the lens of Critical Theory and Open Systems Thinking. Political, corporate, and school system models are briefly reviewed before moving on to application to colleges and universities. Each chapter concludes with a continuous story of a young and maturing college vice president as she grapples with a static and worn governance system at her institution. She strives to reinvigorate the notion of shared governance and to bring staff and students into the process. The final three chapters of the book each include an essay written by individuals who have served on the ground level of shared governance at their institution. These people include: an administrative assistant who helped to create a Staff Council; a Student Government Association president who took a nascent SGA and gave students a new voice; and, an associate dean who mentored students in this developmental process.

The authors analyze the relationships between universities and governments in the Arab world, and make recommendations that will help develop intellectual capacity and thereby aid the economic and social transitions so desperately needed in all Arab countries. Countries aspiring to participate fully in the global knowledge economy require dynamic university sectors operating in concert with governments that actively promote high-quality education and research and foster innovation and entrepreneurship. Successful university-government relationships can be complex and are continually evolving.

Book Theories of Democratic Governance in the Institutions of Higher Education

Download or read book Theories of Democratic Governance in the Institutions of Higher Education written by Emmanuel N. A. Tetteh and published by . This book was released on 2004-05 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integral to the goals of democracy is the premise that the citizenry must be taught the skills necessary for living in a democratic society as a means of achieving social change. In what ways can higher education live up to its civic missions? Should the security of society be of any concern to higher education, and in what ways can colleges and universities contribute to societal security management?Theories of Democratic Governance in the Institutions of Higher Education unravels the notion that "as the institutions of higher education fail to meet their democratic responsibilities, so, too, will the social and cultural infrastructures of their homeland decline to the extent that they become hostile to the democratization of the society."As a contextual framework, Emmanuel Tetteh investigates these eminent concerns, focusing on three critical premises: analysis, synthesis, and evaluation in examining five potential Breadth Theories, including three other resources that helped explore the applicability of these theories from the contemporary and historical democratic perspectives.

Book Democracy and the Academy

Download or read book Democracy and the Academy written by Robert Weissberg and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatises on democracy in higher education are hardly original undertakings in today's troubled, often acrimonious campus environments. All the "hot button" issues -- racial preferences in admissions, sexual harassment, government funding, multiculturalism, speech codes, even formulating the core curriculum -- sooner or later drag in "democracy". In fact, academic democracy has become a virtual scholarly mini-industry. The authors bring a breath of fresh perspectives to this expansive subject, a collection of analyses written by scholars seldom invited to prestigious conferences dominated by eminent presidents, trustees, provosts, and all the other educational "leaders" who normally define pubic discourse at a safe distance from the classroom. The authors eschew the customary offering of high-sounding speeches, platitudes and rhapsodizing about the democratic role of education, especially well-funded education.

Book Advancing Democratic Practice

Download or read book Advancing Democratic Practice written by Douglas Barrera and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is democratic governance and how can it benefit universities and higher education institutions in preparing students to become participating, democratic adult citizens? How can universities and other higher education institutions evaluate how they contribute to their students' education for democratic citizenship? The two authors, coming from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, one a student, the other a professor, examine how deans, rectors and university staff can operate on a day-to-day basis, describe how the journey down the road towards democratic practice tends to take shape and help readers to estimate how far their establishment has come along this road. This guide offers practical advice on starting, continuing and evaluating the journey. The guide is a result of co-operation between the Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights and the Higher Education and Research programmes.

Book Change and Legitimation

Download or read book Change and Legitimation written by Anett Schenk and published by Ibidem Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education has become a mega-topic in both political and scientific debate. Developments in systems of higher education and changes in the governance of this field have been discussed in the literature. Such changes are brought about by collective actors within institutional settings. Anett Schenk directs attention at Social Democratic governments in Sweden and in Germany, specifically in North-Rhine Westphalia in the latter case, and at the policies of higher education they have enacted from the mid-1960s to the year 2000. The empirical basis for her study is a qualitative analysis of such policy documents as inaugural speeches, governmental bills and recommendations of expert groups. The focus of the policies has shifted during the decades that were analysed from an input- to an output-orientation and from addressing issues of class to addressing those of gender segregation. These shifts are discussed against the background of a government's need for legitimation and the impact of intermediate actors on policy development.
