Un día muy confundido y preocupado de ver el camino que había tomado la revolución, Juanito decidió ir a la biblioteca y retiró varios libros para conocer más la ideología que El Estado, los ideólogos y los líderes del partido en el poder imponían sobre la población. Entre más leía sobre aquella doctrina, menos entendía cómo era posible que una ideología cuya filosofía hablaba y promulgaba la liberación del ser humano, a la hora de la práctica convirtiera en esclavos y dogmáticos a toda la población. La doctrina y los adoctrinadores caminaban caminos diametralmente opuestos. La doctrina decía una cosa y los que trataban de ponerla en práctica hacían otra. Los demagogos hablaban de libertad y ellos mismos eran esclavos de su propia doctrina enajenante y seguían obligando al pueblo a ser esclavo. -Es una desgracia tener que pasarse la vida en silencio sin poder decir lo que uno piensa porque si lo hacemos nos meten a la cárcel, nos torturan, nos mandan al exilio o simplemente nos acribillan frente a un paredón-pensaba Juanito. -Yo no puedo vivir así-decía-. ¿De qué valió que miles de compañeros perdieran sus vidas en feroces combates contra el enemigo? . . . ¿De qué valieron todos aquellos años metidos en la montaña con la espalda mojada, cansados, ahuevados, durmiendo en el suelo, enfermos, con el lodo hasta la rodilla, aguantando frío y hambres? . . . “Yo no puedo vivir bajo un sistema que me obliga a aceptar dogmas y una doctrina sacada de los fantásticos sueños de un viejo tejedor de sueños. Yo no tengo por qué aceptar doctrinas enajenantes, filosofías huecas o mitos . . . This book presents the democratic practices, spaces and processes that engage directly with the theoretical assumptions advanced by the epistemologies of the South, summoning other contexts and empirical realities that attest to the possibility of a renewal and deepening of democracy beyond the liberal and representative canon, which is embedded within a world capitalist system. The chapters in this book put forward the ideas of demodiversity, of high-intensity democracy, of the articulation between representative democracy and participatory democracy as well as, in certain contexts, between both these and other forms of democratic deliberation, such as the communitarian democracy of the indigenous and peasant communities of Africa, Latin America and Asia. The challenge undertaken in this book is to demand utopia, imagining a post-abyssal democracy that permits the democratizing, decolonizing, decommodifying and depatriarchalizing of social relations. This post-abyssal democracy obliges us to satisfy the maximum definition of democracy and not the minimum, transforming society into fields of democratization that permeate the structural spaces of contemporary societies.

Rajca combines cultural studies and critical theory to explore how the aftereffects of dictatorship have been used to formulate dominant notions of human rights in the present. In so doing, he critiques the exclusionary nature of these processes and highlights who and what count (and do not count) as subjects of human rights as a result. Through an engaging exploration of the concept of “never again” (nunca más/nunca mais) and close analysis of photography exhibits, audiovisual installations, and other art forms in spaces of cultural memory, the book explores how aesthetic interventions can suggest alternative ways of framing human rights subjectivity beyond the rhetoric of liberal humanitarianism. The book visits sites of memory, two of which functioned as detention and torture centers during dictatorships, to highlight the tensions between the testimonial tenor of permanent exhibits and the aesthetic interventions of temporary installations there. Rajca thus introduces perspectives that both undo common understandings of authoritarian violence and its effects as well as reconfigure who or what are made visible as subjects of memory and human rights in postdictatorship countries.
