Book excerpt: The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center (2016) found that approximately half of the entering freshmen in fall of 2010 within the United States earned their baccalaureate degrees within six years; an even smaller percent of students completed their degrees in the two-year sector. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which individuals benefitted from pursuing postsecondary education, even without degree attainment. Analyzing nonpecuniary benefits that likely impact quality of life, this study used ELS:2002 survey data to determine the benefits of receiving up to 60 credit hours of postsecondary education, more than 60 credit hours of postsecondary education, an associate's degree or certificate, and a bachelor's degree, compared to pursuing no higher education. Propensity score weighting was used to ensure a more accurate regression analysis and best determine the benefits for varying levels of educational attainment. Analyses revealed that those who earned any college credit were more likely to value relationships and education, while earning a degree helped their careers.

This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the declining international ranking in the percentage of young adults with a postsecondary credential, President Obama, philanthropic and policy organizations, and states have set bold goals essentially to double the number of postsecondary degrees and certificates produced in the next 8 to 13 years. Behind this commitment to increased attainment is a value proposition for policymakers and the general public that achieving these goals will lead to social and economic benefits for individuals, states, and the nation. The movement to increase the percentage of U.S. citizens with a high quality postsecondary degree or credential has proceeded alongside a prolonged economic downturn in which state appropriations have fallen below enrollment growth and inflation. Nationally, state and local support per student is down 12.5 percent in constant dollars from FY 2006 to FY 2011. Meanwhile, despite substantial annual tuition increases in most states, between FY 2006 and FY 2011, student full time enrollment increased an average of 16.9 percent nationally. And bachelor's degree production during the period of this study, FY 2005 to FY 2010, grew by 12.7 percent. Increases in both the demand for and the cost of higher education have resulted in a growing number of students relying on student loans to finance postsecondary education. In academic year 2010-11, the percentage of undergraduates who took out federal Stafford loans reached 34 percent compared to 28 percent ten years earlier. This trend, along with higher unemployment rates for recent college graduates4, has led some to question the value of a college degree. The media have reported stories of Americans struggling to find jobs and to pay off their student debt after graduation. Other stories cite a few high profile examples of entrepreneurs who are not college graduates; one entrepreneur has even offered "fellowships" for students to drop out of college and pursue start-up ideas. Despite such skepticism, the evidence clearly demonstrates the value of a college education. According to our analysis of U.S. Census data, those who obtain a bachelor's degree have a median income of $50,360 compared to a median of $29,423 for people with only a high school diploma. An associate's degree leads to a median income of $38,607, more than $9,000 higher than a high school diploma. Those with a graduate degree have a median income of $68,064, 35.2 percent more than those with a bachelor's degree. Additionally, The College Advantage: Weathering the Economic Storm, from the Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce, shows that workers without a college degree have been significantly worse off in the recent economic downturn than those who have attended college. Four out of every five jobs lost in the recession were held by workers with no postsecondary education experience. Although the unemployment rate for recent college graduates is higher than for older workers with comparable education levels, their unemployment rate of 6.8 percent is still more than 17 points lower than for new high school graduates, which is at 24 percent.

Book Trends in Undergraduate Career Education Issue Brief NCES 2005 012

Download or read book Trends in Undergraduate Career Education Issue Brief NCES 2005 012 written by Lisa Hudson and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation in postsecondary education has increased in recent years. However, since students' postsecondary curricular choices are based in part on labor market demand and this demand typically varies across occupations, not all areas of postsecondary education are likely to increase at the same rate. This Issue Brief examines trends in awarded credentials in career-related areas of study at the subbaccalaureate and baccalaureate levels over a 16-year time period, from 1984-85 to 2000-01. The data used in this Issue Brief are from the Completions Survey of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and its predecessor, the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS). The credential counts in these completions files are categorized here by level, as subbaccalaureate (postsecondary certificates and associate's degrees) and baccalaureate (bachelor?s degrees), and by curricular area, based on whether the credential is in an academic field (the traditional liberal arts and sciences) or a career field (occupationally related areas such as engineering, education, and health care). The number of students receiving undergraduate credentials increased from 1984-85 to 2000-01 in both career education and academic education. Other career areas (e.g., protective services, consumer and personal services) became a larger proportion of undergraduate credentials. Finally, the direction of change at the subbaccalaureate and baccalaureate levels was sometimes similar (e.g., agriculture/natural resources, engineering/architectural science), suggesting parallel changes in skill demands in some areas of the labor market at the subbaccalaureate and baccalaureate levels, while in other areas trends differed (e.g., computer science, health care), suggesting different subbaccalaureate and baccalaureate labor markets. Table 1 describes the percentage of credentials awarded in each career area by education by level and curricular focus.

Book excerpt: How is it possible that both university graduates and unfilled job openings are both at record-breaking highs? Our world has changed. New and emerging occupations in every industry now require a combination of academic knowledge and technical ability. With rising education costs, mounting student debt, fierce competition for jobs, and the oversaturation of some academic majors in the workforce, we need to once again guide students towards personality-aligned careers and not just into college. Extensively researched, (Re)Defining the Goal deconstructs the prevalent "one-size-fits-all" education agenda. The author provides a fresh perspective, replicable strategies, and outlines six proven steps to help students secure a competitive advantage in the new economy. Gain a new paradigm and the right resources to help students avoid the pitfalls of unemployment, or underemployment, after graduation.

Book Understanding the Nature of Motivation and Motivating Students through Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Download or read book Understanding the Nature of Motivation and Motivating Students through Teaching and Learning in Higher Education written by David Kember and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon three interrelated open naturalistic studies conducted to better characterise the motivational orientation of students in higher education. Open semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with undergraduates, students at community colleges and students in taught postgraduate courses in Hong Kong. The analysis used an exploratory grounded theory approach and resulted in a motivational orientation framework with six continua with positive and negative poles. On enrolment students had positions on the six facets of motivation, which shifted as they progressed through their degree according to their perceptions of the teaching and learning environment. The framework can, therefore, be used to explain both initial decisions to enrol and motivation to continue studying. The interviews included descriptions of teaching approaches and learning activities and their effects on motivation. This made it possible to describe a teaching and learning environment conducive to motivation, with eight supportive conditions. Each facet of the teaching and learning environment is illustrated with quotations from the three groups of students, resulting in a guide to configuring a teaching and learning environment conducive to motivating students. The emerging community-college sector in Hong Kong is used as a case study of the effects on student motivation of the expansion of the higher education sector through private colleges. Cultural issues are discussed, particularly the performance of Asian students relative to those in the West.
