Book Hydrologic Reconnaissance of the Delta River and Its Drainage Basin Alaska

Download or read book Hydrologic Reconnaissance of the Delta River and Its Drainage Basin Alaska written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-year reconnaissance study was made of a large braided glacial river and its drainage basin for which a minimum of hydrometric and meteorologic data existed. The report includes estimates of the water balance, flow-duration curves, and sediment characteristics, and descriptions of stream response to glacial melt and rain, channel geometry and channel processes. Mean annual basin precipitation is estimated at 40.4 in. and mean annual loss of permanent glacial storage is about 1 in. About 30% of this leaves the basin as evapotranspiration, 50% as stream flow, and 20% as groundwater flow. Characteristics of response to glacial melt are outlined. Flow peaks near the mouth occur within 24 hours of rainfall greater than 0.5 in./day at foothills meteorological stations; rains of less than that amount do not generally produce discernible stream response. Stream channel geometry is described in detail. Most channels on the lower floodplain are asymmetrical and are roughly triangular or parabolic, and have high width/depth ratios. At-a-station hydraulic geometry is described. Surveys and ground and aerial photography are used to describe channel changes. (Author).

Book Time and Tide

Download or read book Time and Tide written by Richard Shellhorn and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: is a story about a duck cabin on Alaska's Copper River Delta—and much more! In 1959 the Shellhorns built their place on Pete Dahl Slough, one of many intertidal waterways that braid the 50 mile marshland formed by the Copper. This wetland is a natural breeding habitat for waterfowl, and also a stopping place for migratory birds. Time and Tide Adventures on Alaska's Copper River Delta While early explorers and prospectors traversed the region, it was salmon that first drew pioneers to the outer edges of the Delta, where fishermen built camps to operate set net sites. Soon the famous Copper River and Northwestern Railroad would follow. Here is a chronicle of the early days of the Delta, beginning with Lt. Henry Allen's amazing expedition up the Copper in 1885, as well as a history of fisheries, war, roads, fires, storms, earthquakes, floods, and duck hunting. Plus change of habitat, with moose, bear, and other predators moving out on the Delta as brush and trees exploded following land uplift, and the sloughs gradually silted in. Meet characters such as Long Shorty, Curly Hoover, Kernel Korn, Eyeball Leer, and the Mayor of Pete Dahl, Don Shellhorn. Learn about duck shacks such as the Pair-A-Dice Inn, Boxcar, and Korn Hole, and the rich history hidden in their walls. Delight in the foibles of boating and hunting in the wild weather and water of the Flats. Revel in the Ode to Family and small town Alaska found in countless quotes from the Shellhorn Duck Cabin Logs, 54 years of unique recorded history, written by 458 different visitors. Full of laughter, joy, and tragedy; replete with lessons and truths; ribald and poignant; Time and Tide is the story of an Era of Adventure on the Copper River Delta.

Book Spring Breakup of the Delta River Alaska

Download or read book Spring Breakup of the Delta River Alaska written by C. W. Slaughter and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spring 'breakup' of snow and ice on the Delta River, Alaska, was monitored in 1967. Breakup on this braided river was a relatively calm event, with gradual development of open-water channels from headwaters to mouth. Air temperature data at Big Delta, near the mouth of the river, indicated an accumulation of 30 positive degree-days (F) above 32F, using mean daily values, prior to first observation of continuous open water from headwaters to mouth; a corresponding value, but using maximum daily air temperatures, was 224 degree-days (F). A photographic sequence of breakup at several points along the river is included. (Author).
