Book excerpt: NASA has long relied on the Delta II medium class launch vehicle (MCLV) to launch science missions. Delta II, however, is no longer in production, and no other vehicle in the relative cost and performance range is currently certified for NASA use. This report assessed: (1) NASA's and the contractor's steps to ensure resources are available to support safe Delta II oper. through 2011; (2) NASA's plans and contingencies for ensuring a smooth transition from current small and MCLV to other launch vehicles; (3) the risks associated with NASA's planned approach to fill the MCLV capability gap; and (4) technical and programmatic implications if NASA commits to new launch vehicles before they are certified and proven. Illustrations. A print on demand report.

Download or read book To Reach the High Frontier written by Roger D. Launius and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2002 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most towns did not have hospitals of their own before the mid-twentieth century, and Kentucky towns were no exception. KentuckyÕs first real hospital opened in 1823, but it was in LouisvilleÑtoo far away to serve many Kentucky communities, especially in cases of emergency. For this and other reasons, the lifespan of the average Kentuckian in the 1800s was only 40 years. Today it has grown to 75, and trained medical professionals are available to most communities throughout the state. Healing Kentucky tells how medical care changed in Kentucky over 200 years and became the much safer and better system we know today. It also describes early healing practices and methods used to care for the sick in the days before safe hospitals, even on Civil War battlefields. From cholera epidemics to polio and plastic surgery, readers will learn much about the people who shaped medicine in Kentucky.

  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1996-02-08

  • Pages : 99 pages

Download or read book Reusable Launch Vehicle written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-02-08 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key to opening the use of space to private enterprise and to broader public uses lies in reducing the cost of the transportation to space. More routine, affordable access to space will entail aircraft-like quick turnaround and reliable operations. Currently, the space Shuttle is the only reusable launch vehicle, and even parts of it are expendable while other parts require frequent and extensive refurbishment. NASA's highest priority new activity, the Reusable Launch Vehicle program, is directed toward developing technologies to enable a new generation of space launchers, perhaps but not necessarily with single stage to orbit capability. This book assesses whether the technology development, test and analysis programs in propulsion and materials-related technologies are properly constituted to provide the information required to support a December 1996 decision to build the X-33, a technology demonstrator vehicle; and suggest, as appropriate, necessary changes in these programs to ensure that they will support vehicle feasibility goals.

Book Nasa

  • Author : U S Government Accountability Office (G
  • Publisher : BiblioGov
  • Release : 2013-08
  • ISBN : 9781289291280

Download or read book Nasa written by U S Government Accountability Office (G and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has long relied on the Delta II medium class launch vehicle to launch science missions. Delta II, however, is no longer in production, and no other vehicle in the relative cost and performance range is currently certified for NASA use. Thus, NASA faces a potential gap in the availability of medium class launch vehicles that could cause design challenges, delays, or funding issues. GAO was asked to assess (1) NASA's and the Delta II contractor's, steps to ensure resources (budget, workforce, and facilities) are available to support safe Delta II operations through the last planned NASA flight in 2011; (2) NASA's plans and contingencies for ensuring a smooth transition from current small and medium class launch vehicles to other launch vehicles for future science missions; (3) the risks associated with NASA's planned approach to fill the medium launch capability gap; and (4) technical and programmatic implications to science missions if NASA commits to new launch vehicles before they are certified and proven. GAO identified and assessed transition plans and mitigation activities and interviewed responsible NASA and government officials.
