Book excerpt: Rarely is one's life as it appears to onlookers observing from afar. When observing the life and family of NBA great Michael Jordan, words such as chaos and dysfunction are not words that any of us would associate with the great icon. Yet, this 224-page hardcover autobiography written by his older sister, Deloris E. Jordan, depicts a life of situations that are nothing less than chaotic and dysfunctional at times. While paying homage to the world icon and his great accomplishments, the author also recounts her family's life before her youngest brother became one of the most recognizable athletes, men, and legendary economic figures in the world. Recalling the charismatic charm and risk-taking adventurers of an athlete known for his flying capabilities, she writes earnestly of childhood enjoyments as well as familial discord before ushering us down the road of her own personal experiences. Experiences that tarnished her childhood, destroyed her adolescent dreams, and left her trying to escape the damage of it all still, thirty-plus years later. Many books have and will be written about Michael and the Jordan family, but none of them can tell this author's perspective or personal story better than the author herself. Retracing her journey to wellness, Deloris E. Jordan writes with uncompromised truth and grave transparency in hopes that others will learn from her familial experiences and be spared some of their pain.

Her galvanizing message on encouraging responsibility and a passion for excellence has inspired parents across the country. Being the mother of basketball's greatest player has given Deloris Jordan a platform, but it's her experience bringing up an accomplished family in a challenging environment, along with her deep commitment to church and community, that gave her the expertise she passes on in this invaluable handbook for parents of children of all ages. Using warm anecdotes and never-before-told family stories, Jordan paints a realistic and uplifting portrait of the potential power of parents. She explores the universal goals that parents set for their children -- self-discipline, responsibility, perseverance, moral values, and the desire to achieve -- and explains the practical tools and strategies theJordan family uses to realize those goals. And through personal examples and wise, plainspoken insight, Deloris Jordan challenges, guides, and encourages parents who long to do everything they can to help their children learn, grow, prosper, and succeed.

Book excerpt: This book will help readers understand more about gerontological nursing, how the different nursing specialties interact, and the necessity for multidisciplinary team approaches to improve systems in the industry. The book also highlights some of the many individuals who have contributed to reaching for higher care levels in nursing homes. Innovative processes such as the Eden Alternative and the Quality Indicator Survey process are introduced, which will assist people to understand the wide range of ways in which the system can be improved. As the author emphasizes throughout the book, the psychology of "kindness" is essential and needs to be demonstrated by everyone in the gerontological field, from care-providers to families and patients. Emotions can run high as patients and families may be frightened, confused, and concerned about making good decisions, while the care providers are themselves working hard to provide appropriate care while coping with multiple demands. Consideration and humor are, in fact, most important for creating a positive atmosphere for those in nursing homes.

Book The Book of Dolores

  • Author : William T. Vollmann
  • Publisher : powerHouse Books
  • Release : 2013-10-29
  • ISBN : 1576876578
  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book The Book of Dolores written by William T. Vollmann and published by powerHouse Books. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William T. Vollmann has travelled to Soviet-occupied Afghanistan with Islamic commandos, shivered out a solitary stretch at the North Magnetic Pole in winter, hopped freight trains, studied the stately ancient beauties of Japanese Noh theater, and made friends with street prostitutes all over the world-all in the interest of learning a little more about life. Now in his mid-fifties, Vollmann sets out on what may well be impossible for a heterosexual genetic male: to envision himself as a woman. In these photographs, block prints, and watercolor drawings, he portrays his alter ego, Dolores, with whimsicality, and sometimes with cruelty-for Dolores would like to be attractive, or at least to "pass," but the ageing male body in which she remains confined requires lowered expectations. Meanwhile, the drawings and block prints, composed with the artist's glasses off, show Dolores as she imagines herself to be. The Book of Dolores brings the genre of self-portraits to a new level of vulnerability and bravery. In the process, it offers virtuoso performances of nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first-century photographic techniques, including the seductively difficult gum bichromate method. Each section of the book is accompanied by an essay on motives and techniques.
