Download or read book The Fall and Rise of National Interest written by Serena Giusti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to make NI more accessible and viable, especially as a critical device for better understanding contemporary politics. The purpose is to refresh the debate on NI and to explore this fascinating concept, appreciating its multifaceted and malleable nature. Throughout time, NI has been presented as an ambiguous but obstinate concept in politics, political discourse, and theoretical elaboration. NI has constantly resurfaced, and many designate themselves as its protectors. Its increasing relevance, pertinence and recurrence make it clear that it can no longer be ignored in political analysis.

Book excerpt: Claudio Monteverdi is now recognized as the towering figure of a critical transitional moment of Western music history: relentless innovator in every genre within chamber, church and theatre music; self-proclaimed leader of a 'new dispensation' between words and their musical expression; perhaps even 'Creator of Modern Music'. During recent years, as his arrestingly attractive music has been brought back to life in performance, so too have some of the most outstanding musicologists focussed intensely on Monteverdi as they worked through the 'big' questions in the historiography and hermeneutics of early Baroque music, including musical representation of language; compositional theory; social, institutional, cultural and gender history; performance practices and more. The 17 articles in this volume have been selected by Richard Wistreich to exemplify the best scholarship in English and because each, in retrospect, turns out to have been a ground-breaking contribution to one or more significant strands in Monteverdi studies.

Book Robert Burton on the Melancholic Plague

Download or read book Robert Burton on the Melancholic Plague written by Cláudio Alexandre S. Carvalho and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an innovative perspective on the melancholic character of English divine, writer and academic Robert Burton (1577–1640) and how it shaped his confrontations with political and academic powers. Delving on his historical context, personal struggles and earlier literary pieces, this enquiry provides a new reading of The Anatomy of Melancholy, revealing its deeper purposes and how these prefigure the tensions at the heart of modern discourses—therapeutic, political, and economic. Along with Burton’s observations on melancholy, the book highlights the emergence of "melancholic observation", a new kind of reflexive and critical stance on the pressing issues of his time This is well expressed in Burton's presentation of 'melancholizing' as a creative activity, which uses the existential stance as the grounding for utopian imagination and projects performative ways to expose the limitations of political and academic powers. Beyond its analysis of Burton's melancholic character, the book provides a wealth of knowledge that enhances the study and teaching of various subjects. It illuminates the transformation of Renaissance medicine and its embeddedness within religious, academic, and literary discourses and practices, offers insights into historical figures associated with the concept of melancholy, explores shifts in philosophical readership during the era, and uncovers the precursors of psychotherapy. By connecting these diverse subjects, it provides an interdisciplinary approach that enriches our understanding of the cultural and intellectual landscape of the time. Robert Burton on the Melancholic Plague invites readers on an intellectual journey through the profound complexities of Robert Burton's masterpiece, The Anatomy of Melancholy. By intertwining existential, socio-political, geographic, economic, and artistic dimensions of Burton’s work, it opens new avenues of exploration, gaining valuable insights into the motivation and depth of his work.

Book Books on Military Architecture Printed in Venice

Download or read book Books on Military Architecture Printed in Venice written by Paul Breman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the great days of Italian fortification literature – the century from Valle's first Venetian edition in 1524 to the appearance of Tensini in 1624 – Venice accounted for roughly as many titles as the rest of Europe together. Books on fortification were a natural for the enterprising printer-publishers of this city-state, free from the constraints of small-minded princes and their paranoid insistence on "state secrets". This annotated catalogue describes 350 books, published until the time when Venice ceased to be an independent state. It provides massive documentation taking into account the many "ghosts" created by misprints or over-zealous bibliographers and gives full collations, extensive annotations and locations of copies of all entries. An index of printers and a "bibliographie raisonnée" of the sources used, appear at the end. The thirty-five illustrations are chosen for their relevance to the subject and range from early bastion traces to emblematic portraits.
