Book Delhi Past and Present

Download or read book Delhi Past and Present written by H. C. Fanshawe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Delhi Past and Present: With Maps and Illustrations It has long been my wish to attempt to write an adequate Guide to Delhi, containing a brief General History of the city. The commencement of my notes on the subject dates from more than fifteen years back, and I had hoped to complete the material at leisure while in charge of the office of Commissioner of the Delhi Division. Distress and famine, however, in 1899 and 1900, and unforeseen events in the spring of 1901, seriously hampered my efforts in this direction; and the work which I can now offer to the public is consequently not so complete as I could have wished it to be. The first Guides to Delhi, by Mr Beresford and Mr Cooper, were both sadly incomplete and sadly incorrect; Captain Harcourt's more useful Guide has long been out of print; the little Handbook by Mr H.G. Keene, which must have been appreciated by many hundreds of visitors to the place, must also, I think, have seemed to many of them too slight a work for so large a subject. Book excerpt: A breathtakingly illustrated cartographic history of India's capital The first text of its kind to focus on Delhi Provides a comprehensive and engaging overview of mapping in Delhi, from the nineteenth century all the way up to the near-distant future: the 'master-plan' of 2021 As the first ever organized collection of Delhi's maps, containing a chronology of magnificent ancient and modern hand-drawings as well as digital maps of the city, this book is as visually stunning as it is informative. Dr Guerrieri describes each map as an individual entity. She gives the maps unique and detailed focus, elaborating on their idiosyncrasies, aesthetic details, and rich historical relevance. The evolution of planning and architecture, which elegantly unfolds through the maps, mirrors the political, social, and historical progression of the capital. Maps of Delhi is both beautiful and stimulating, while also offering deeply insightful commentary that will be appreciated by the most discerning of scholars. It is an indisputable milestone for those wanting to research the capital. The book reveals, as A.G. Krishna Menon notes in the foreword, the charm of printed maps and the many pleasures and insights they offer when they are physically handled. It is a remarkable tribute to a remarkable city."
