Book English Irish Delftware 1570 1840

Download or read book English Irish Delftware 1570 1840 written by Aileen Dawson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tin-glazed earthenware has been made in Europe since the 15th century. In Britain, floor tiles and drug pots were made in Aldgate, London in the 16th century by immigrant potters from the Low Countries. In the early 17th century, factories making dishes and other wares were set up in London close to the River Thames. Their products were initially much influenced by Chinese porcelain as well as by Italian maiolica. Manufacture spread from London to centres such as Bristol, Liverpool and Dublin. Known as 'gally ware' in the 17th century, this type of pottery has come to be known as 'delftware' from the Dutch town of Delft which was renowned for its manufacture ... The British Museum collection of delftware, which was established in the later part of the 19th century, is one of the finest in the world. It is especially notable for the number of pieces bearing dates and for those which document historical personages and events. This beautifully illustrated book will feature more than 140 items from this extensive collection and include pieces which have never before been fully described or published in colour."--Publisher's description.

Book Delftware

Download or read book Delftware written by Michael Archer and published by H.M. Stationery Office. This book was released on 1997 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tin-glazed pottery was imported from the Mediterranean over 500 years ago, but Delftware, with its distinctive blue-and-white designs influenced by Chinese porcelain, was first made in Northern Europe in the Netherlands, and subsequently in the burgeoning English potteries for the affluent middle classes. Changing fashions and the emergence of new materials and manufacturing techniques forced the obsolescence of Delftware by 1840, and pieces today command very high prices. Every piece in this catalogue is illustrated, in many cases with more than one view. The book also contains authoritative essays which provide a wider context for Delftware.

Book Dragons Tigers and Bamboo

Download or read book Dragons Tigers and Bamboo written by George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art. Macdonald Collection and published by Douglas & McIntyre. This book was released on 2009 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early seventeenth century when the secret of porcelain was first carried from China to Japan by Korean potters, Japan has produced some of the world's most exquisite porcelains. The Kakiemon masters in Arita on the island of Kyushu gained particular renown for the quality of their colourful overglaze enamels and artistic designs. Through exports Kakiemon ware had a profound impact on the development of European porcelain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, inspiring ceramic manufacturers in both continental Europe and England to reach new levels of technical and artistic achievement. Dragons, Tigers and Bamboo highlights 170 masterpieces from the Bill and Molly Anne Macdonald Collection at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto, Canada. This extraordinary collection illustrates many different aspects of the historical interaction between Japanese and European porcelain during the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is unquestionably the best cross-cultural porcelain collection in Canada and is among the best of its kind in the world. Illustrated with more than 160 full-colour photographs commissioned for this volume, Dragons, Tigers and Bamboo for the first time makes the Macdonald Collection accessible to an international audience.

Book Historical Archaeology of Gendered Lives

Download or read book Historical Archaeology of Gendered Lives written by Deborah Rotman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-25 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last half of the nineteenth century, a number of social and economic factors converged that resulted in the rural village of Deerfield, Massachusetts becoming almost entirely female. This drastic shift in population presents a unique lens through which to study gender roles and social relations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The lessons gleaned from this case study will provide new insight to the study of gender relations throughout other historical periods as well. Through an intensive examination of both historical and archaeological evidence, the author presents a clear picture of the gendered social relations in Deerfield over the span of seventy years. While gender relations in urban settings have been studied extensively, this unique work provides the same level of examination to gender relations in a rural setting. Likewise, where previous studies have often focused only on relations between married men and women, the unique case of Deerfield provides insight into the experiences of single women, particularly widows and “spinsters”. This work presents a unique contribution that will be essential for anyone studying the historical archaeology of gender, or gender roles in the Victorian era and beyond.
