Book Fluorescence of Doped Crystals of Anthracene Naphthalene and Phenanthrene Under High Pressures the Role of Excimers in Energy Transfer to the Guest Molecules

Download or read book Fluorescence of Doped Crystals of Anthracene Naphthalene and Phenanthrene Under High Pressures the Role of Excimers in Energy Transfer to the Guest Molecules written by Peter F. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluorescence spectra of crystals of anthracene, naphthalene, phenanthrene doped with other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been studied at pressures as great as 50 kbar. The most significant effects of pressure on the spectra of the host crystals are a loss of intensity of the normal fluorescence with increasing pressure and the almost simultaneous appearance of a broad, featureless emission at energies about 3000 to 6000/cm lower than that of the normal fluorescence. This emission is assigned as the fluorescence of excimers formed upon optical excitation of the crystals under high pressure. The growth of the intensity of the excimer emission with increasing pressure, relative to the intensity of the normal fluorescence, is the same in doped crystals as in pure crystals. The intensities of the guest molecule fluorescences relative to the intensity of the normal host fluorescence in the various doped crystals increase with pressure at about the same rate as the intensity of the excimer emission. These observations are interpreted as indicating that excimers are the lowest-energy excited singlet species of aromatic molecular crystals at these pressures and that, when the excimer concentration is appreciable, the path of energy transfer is from the host via excimers to the guest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were presented at an international symposium on Topics in Surface Chemistry which was held in Bad Neuenahr, West Germany., September 7-9, 1977. The symposium was sponsored by IBM Germany. It has been recognized for many years that our understanding of bulk phenomena and their subsequent exploitation depends largely on our ability to define correlations between microscopic structure and the physical and chemical phenomena of interest. The role played by surface phenomena in the overall behavior of a material has been a subject for speculation for a long time, but only during the last decade or so have experimental and theor etical tools been developed which make it possible to investigate surface structure and related surface phenomena uniquely. Numerous surface spectroscopies have been developed in recent years intended to describe the geometric, vibrational and electronic structure of a surface. Our present understanding of surface, thin film and interfacial phenomena in solid state physics owes much to these developments. In chemistry much of the interest in surface science has come from the obvious implications to such important and diverse fields as catalysis and corrosion. It takes little imagination to recognize that there are many other areas where advances in surface science can be brought to bear.

Book Triboluminescence

Download or read book Triboluminescence written by David O. Olawale and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book expounds on progress made over the last 35 years in the theory, synthesis, and application of triboluminescence for creating smart structures. It presents in detail the research into utilization of the triboluminescent properties of certain crystals as new sensor systems for smart engineering structures, as well as triboluminescence-based sensor systems that have the potential to enable wireless, in-situ, real time and distributed (WIRD) structural health monitoring of composite structures. The sensor component of any structural health monitoring (SHM) technology — measures the effects of the external load/event and provides the necessary inputs for appropriate preventive/corrective action to be taken in a smart structure — sits at the heart of such a system. This volume explores advances in materials properties and structural behavior underlying creation of smart composite structures and sensor systems for structural health monitoring of critical engineering structures, such as bridges, aircrafts, and wind blades.

Book Relaxation of Elementary Excitations

Download or read book Relaxation of Elementary Excitations written by R. Kubo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Proceedings of the Taniguchi International Symposium on "Relaxation of Elementary Excitations" which was held October 12-16,1979, at Susono-shi (at the foot of f1t. Fuji) in Japan. The pleasant atmosphere of the Symposium is evidenced in the picture of the participants shown on the next page. The purpose of the symposium was to provide an opportunity for a limited number of active researchers to meet and to discuss relaxation processes and related phenomena not only of excitons and phonons in solids but also electronic and vibrational excitations in molecules and biological systems. First, the lattice relaxation, i.e., multi-phonon process, associated with electronic excitation, which plays important roles in self-trapping of an exciton and a particle (electron and hole) and also in degradation of semi conductor lasers, is discussed. Second, this lattice relaxation is studied as the intermediate state interaction in the second-order optical responses, i.e., in connection with the competitive behavior of Raman scattering and luminescence. Third, relaxation mechanisms and relaxation constants are by spectroscopic methods as well as by genuine nonlinear optical determined phenomena. Conversely the relaxation is decisive in coherent nonlinear optical phenomena such as laser, superradiance, and optical bistability. Fourth, the role played by relaxation processes is discussed for optical phenomena in macromolecules and biological system such as photosynthesis.

Download or read book Quantitative EPR written by Gareth R. Eaton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need in both industrial and academic research to obtain accurate quantitative results from continuous wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments. This book describes various sample-related, instrument-related and software-related aspects of obtaining quantitative results from EPR expe- ments. Some speci?c items to be discussed include: selection of a reference standard, resonator considerations (Q, B ,B ), power saturation, sample position- 1 m ing, and ?nally, the blending of all the factors together to provide a calculation model for obtaining an accurate spin concentration of a sample. This book might, at ?rst glance, appear to be a step back from some of the more advanced pulsed methods discussed in recent EPR texts, but actually quantitative “routine CW EPR” is a challenging technique, and requires a thorough understa- ing of the spectrometer and the spin system. Quantitation of CW EPR can be subdivided into two main categories: (1) intensity and (2) magnetic ?eld/mic- wave frequency measurement. Intensity is important for spin counting. Both re- tive intensity quantitation of EPR samples and their absolute spin concentration of samples are often of interest. This information is important for kinetics, mechanism elucidation, and commercial applications where EPR serves as a detection system for free radicals produced in an industrial process. It is also important for the study of magnetic properties. Magnetic ?eld/microwave frequency is important for g and nuclear hyper?ne coupling measurements that re?ect the electronic structure of the radicals or metal ions.
