Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cutting-edge resource provides a comprehensive treatment of applying delay-tolerant networking (DTN) principles to satellite-based network communications. Detailed models and analytical tools are used to evaluate performance and provide guidance in the field. This book presents the state-of-the-art in existing on-board and ground technologies that support satellite applications, such as communications protocols, algorithms, and security procedures. Readers gain key insight into the fundamental concepts of DTN applied to satellite networks (DTSNs) and case studies are provided. This book presents an authoritative introduction to the methods for computing metrics for satellite network modeling. Satellite communications are examined, including satellite links, communication protocols, and distributed multiple access schemes, such as time division, code division, and frequency division. This book focuses on ways in which DTN might make terrestrial communication and observation via earth orbiting satellites less expensive and more robust. The fundamental concepts and analysis of the Ring Road Architecture are explored. Unique analyses on the motivating factors of using Inter-Satellite Links (ISL) to form networks in disruptive environments in space are discussed. This book explores the limits of larger and complex DTSNs as the number of satellites increase and different orbital formations become possible. As satellite networks become larger in upcoming years this book provides a guide for readers to stay informed about standard protocols such as DTN that will allow seamless interoperation, cost reduction, and risk mitigation.

Book A Delay efficient Satellite Network for Multimedia Communication

Download or read book A Delay efficient Satellite Network for Multimedia Communication written by Mark Foster and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In recent years low earth orbit (LEO) satellites have begun to attract much attention. This attention is largely due to their relatively small propagation delays (5̃ to 10ms) when compared with that of geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites (1̃20 ms). However, due to the inherent nature of a LEO satellite network, transmissions very often require hopping through a large number of satellites. Anytime that a transmission must travel through a number of nodes we must consider the processing delay of each node when calculating the end-to-end delay. This thesis analyzes and observes that the total delay experienced in a LEO satellite network can sometimes result in a longer end-to-end delay than routing through a GEO satellite network. We thus proposed a hybrid satellite network of LEO and GEO satellites that might best minimize end-to-end delays. Both a LEO and a hybrid system were designed and simulated using Network Simulator (NS). The results show much smaller end-to-end delays (e.g., 46%) when transmitting through our hybrid satellite network than a strictly LEO satellite network.

Book Transport Network and Data Link Layer Protocol Designs to Improve Geo stationary Earth Orbit Satellite Data Set Transmission Performance

Download or read book Transport Network and Data Link Layer Protocol Designs to Improve Geo stationary Earth Orbit Satellite Data Set Transmission Performance written by Paul Douglas Wiedemeier and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geo-stationary earth orbit (CEO) satellites are wireless transmission media that provide near-earth Internet and Intranet data communication, but are limited to low Megabits per second transmission rates and small messages. They can provide communication infrastructure to rural earth locales, are not affected by terrorist events and natural disasters that render terrestrial channels unusable, and can replace terrestrial communication infrastructure. In this thesis, we present new designs for a transport layer data transmission protocol, a network layer routing strategy, and a data-link layer medium access control strategy. Through simulation, we show that our designs permit earth stations to transmit large data sets at high transmission rates over GEO satellites in less time than the Transmission Control Protocol variant Reno and frequency division multiplexing. Our designs can be used by organizations that wish to transmit large data sets quickly over CEO satellites that exhibit large bandwidth delay products and large bit error rates.

Book Network and Protocol Architectures for Future Satellite Systems

Download or read book Network and Protocol Architectures for Future Satellite Systems written by Tomaso de Cola and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their conception, satellite communications have been regarded as a promising tool for all environments where the terrestrial infrastructure is limited in capacity or to take advantage of the multicasting/broadcasting capabilities inherent in satellite technology. Recent advances have seen satellite technology mature to a more prominent role in the telecommunications domain. In particular, the design of novel satellite payload concepts for Geostationary (GEO) satellite platforms, as well as renewed interest in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations have made the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks almost compulsory to ensure new services meet the requirements for high user-rate and quality of experience that could not be achieved using either of the two technologies independently. From this viewpoint, convergence of satellite and terrestrial technologies also requires considering the most recent trends in networking, with special attention being paid to the potential new architectures that have been recently proposed in the framework of Future Internet. This monograph explores the main components of the scenarios above, putting particular emphasis on the networking aspects. To this end, novel protocols such as Multi Path TCP (MPTCP) and networking trends such as Information Centric Networking (ICN) are explored by demonstrating their applicability in some scenarios that deploy both satellite and terrestrial segments. Particular attention is given to smart gateway diversity schemes which advocate the use of sophisticated multi-path transmission schemes to exploit the multi-homing features offered by present day devices. The second part of the monograph is dedicated to content-based networking, which is becoming increasingly popular driven by the pervasiveness of the Internet in everyday life. In this regard, applications to satellite communications are illustrated and the technical challenges to be further addressed are highlighted.

Book Delay Tolerant Networking for Cubesat Topologies and Platforms

Download or read book Delay Tolerant Networking for Cubesat Topologies and Platforms written by Paul D. Muri and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A CubeSat is a pico-satellite platform with a volume as small as 10cm3. Universities, companies, and governments use CubeSats to conduct space technology experiments, demonstrations, and research at lower manufacturing costs. Traditionally, CubeSats communicate over amateur frequencies using point-to-point links. This severely limits both the data rate and the time window to downlink to a single ground station. However, CubeSats, as part of a spaced-based sensor network, have the potential to augment existing systems through interlinking with other spacecraft and ground stations. Through lower orbits and strategic topologies, CubeSat networks can provide data with increased temporal and spatial resolution to supplement low earth orbit missions. In this dissertation, Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) communication protocols were designed to enable hop-by-hop store and forward communications between CubeSats. From analysis and testing, it was demonstrated that DTN protocols can be applied to address the limitations of CubeSat networks such as radio frequency link margins, topology management, intermittent connections, slow downlink data-rates, long propagation delays, and constrained processing resources. The major contributions of the dissertation are a deployable high gain S-band helical prototype network simulation of low earth orbits with optimized network timing parameters, a DTN network testbed with space link channel emulation, and an implementation of DTN on CubeSat hardware.
