Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born out of a disastrous flood and one of the first large environmental protests in the US, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area now provides a 70,000-acre connection to the natural world to four million visitors a year. This unit of the National Park Service preserves historical sites that predate English settlement in the New World and evidence of Native Americans going back 13,000 years. Established in 1965, Delaware Water Gap NRA also incorporates 40 miles of the Middle Delaware National and Scenic Recreation River, 28 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, a state forest, and state wildlife management areas. Its many natural features include the highest waterfalls in two states, plus a geological feature once recognized as a scenic Wonder of the World. See why Condé Nast Traveler named the Delaware Water Gap the most beautiful place in Pennsylvania.

Book The Old Mine Road

Download or read book The Old Mine Road written by Charles Gilbert Hine and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1963 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Mine Road, considered the first road in America designed for wheeled vehicles, was built three hundred years ago by Dutch settlers for access to the mines of the Minisink country. It began in Kingston, New York, wove through Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey, and ended near the Delaware Water Gap. Many changes have taken place in these regions since C. G. Hine recorded his observations and printed The Old Mine Road for his friends in 1908. Bulldozers have obliterated much of what he saw as he took his readers along the length of the road, describing the natural beauty of the countryside and relating the history and legends linked with the road and the people who lived on its route. This new printing is a facsimile of the first 1908 edition. Henry Charlton Beck's introduction gives a publishing history of the book and provides a biographical sketch about Hine.

Book The Appalachian National Scenic Trail

Download or read book The Appalachian National Scenic Trail written by Charles H. W. Foster and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1968, management of the Appalachian Trail shifted from control by an informal alliance of private-citizen volunteers to a designated responsibilty of the National Park Service. To protect it from adverse development, Congress had made the trail part of the national park system and endorsed an unique private/public cooperative management system involving scores of private organizations and public jurisdictions. The volunteers still have the lead role in defining the work, but public agencies have the accountability. This June 1987 history is the inside story of how the pieces of that puzzle were put together, by the chairman of a group of volunteers and state-appointed officials that crafted this model of private/public stewardship of public recreational lands.
