Book excerpt: An anecdotal, rollicking tour through America's most colorful region. From the Tidewater through Appalachia, down the Blue Ridge country and into the sunbelt, B.C. Hall and C.T. Wood take us through the American South, inviting us to listen to its music -- blues, country, gospel, and rock -- and to the voices that have shaped its extraordinary, distinctive literature. Interweaving interviews with people both ordinary and famous with thought-provoking reflections on Southern life, history, politics, humor, religion, and cultural icons, The South is a matchless, impressionistic portrait of a people and a place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between North and South chronicles the three-decade-long struggle over segregated schooling in Delaware, a key border state and important site of civil rights activism and white reaction. Historian Brett Gadsden begins by tracing the origins of a long litigation campaign by NAACP attorneys who translated popular complaints about the inequities in Jim Crow schooling into challenges to racial proscriptions in public education. Their legal victories subsequently provided the evidentiary basis for the Supreme Court's historic decision in Brown v. Board of Education, marking Delaware as a center of civil rights advancements. Gadsden's further examination of a novel metropolitan approach to address the problem of segregation in city and suburban schools, wherein proponents highlighted the web of state-sponsored discrimination that produced interrelated school and residential segregation, reveals the strategic creativity of civil rights activists. He shows us how, even in the face of concerted white opposition, these activists continued to advance civil rights reforms into the 1970s, secured one of the most progressive busing remedies in the nation, and created a potential model for desegregation efforts across the United States. Between North and South also explores how activists on both sides of the contest in this border state—adjacent to the Mason-Dixon line—helped create, perpetuate, and contest ideas of southern exceptionalism and northern innocence. Gadsden offers instead a new framework in which "southern-style" and "northern-style" modes of racial segregation and discrimination are revealed largely as regional myths that civil rights activists and opponents alternately evoked and strategically deployed to both advance and thwart reform.

Book Integrating Delaware

Download or read book Integrating Delaware written by Annette Woolard-Provine and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The personal stories of lesser-known leaders in the civil rights movement remain unwritten. Moreover, the peculiar situation of the black middle class, which produced many of these civil rights heroes, remains largely unknown. The Reddings of Wilmington, Delaware were in many ways typical of their class in twentieth-century America. Their story is important because they were ordinary, hardworking people who strove for excellence and achieved success, and who for a moment in time, helped make a difference in their community and their country."--Jacket.

Book Down and out in Philadelphia and New York

Download or read book Down and out in Philadelphia and New York written by Garret Godwin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down and Out in Philadelphia and New York by author Garret Thomas Godwin is an introspective look at two great American cities. Godwin, with an omnipotent and candid voice, philosophizes about the modern-day issues that affect these metropolises: poverty, status, crime, education, and ethnicity. Comparing the best and worst of each, Godwin gives the reader a unique and intimate view of their populace and flavor. What makes each city tick? How does the Philadelphia Art Museum compare with New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art? Whats better, Phillys soft pretzels or New Yorks hot dogs? New Yorks pride and joy is Central Park, but what about the lesser known Fairmont Park in Philly? Discover the nuances between the middle class and upper class in these two major cities, the future of pharmaceuticals, how to mix with the movers and shakers, how to keep from getting mugged, and how to avoid respiratory disease in these pollution-heavy environments. Godwins comparisons tout the highs and lows of each within a sociological context. With big-city slang and intuitive observation, Godwin leaves it up to the reader to render his or her own opinion: do we really live in a melting pot, or has America reached its crescendo?
