Book Status of the Dosimetry for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation DS86

Download or read book Status of the Dosimetry for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation DS86 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-10-04 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee on Dosimetry for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) was set up more than a decade ago at the request of the U.S. Department of Energy. It was charged with monitoring work and experimental results related to the Dosimetry System 1986 (DS86) used by RERF to reconstruct the radiation doses to the survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At the time it was established, DS86 was believed to be the best available dosimetric system for RERF, but questions have persisted about some features, especially the estimates of neutrons resulting from the Hiroshima bomb. This book describes the current situation, the gamma-ray dosimetry, and such dosimetry issues as thermal-neutron discrepancies between measurement and calculation at various distances in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It recommends approaches to bring those issues to closure and sets the stage for the recently convened U.S. and Japan Working Groups that will develop a new dosimetry for RERF. The book outlines the changes relating to DS86 in the past 15 years, such as improved numbers that go into, and are part of, more sophisticated calculations for determining the radiations from bombs that reach certain distances in air, and encourages incorporation of the changes into a revised dosimetry system.

Book Nuclear Cross Sections for 95 Mev Neutrons

Download or read book Nuclear Cross Sections for 95 Mev Neutrons written by James DeJuren and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total cross sections of twelve different elements were measured using the neutron beam from the 184-in. cyclotron, operating with deuterons. Bismuth fission ionization chambers were employed as both monitor and detector in conventional 'good geometry' attenuation measurements in the neutron flux emerging from the 3-in. diameter collimating port in the 10-ft-thick concrete shielding. The mean energy of detection of the neutrons in this experiment is estimated to be 95 Mev. Measurements were also made with a monitor and detector placed inside the concrete shielding where an intense neutron flux over a large area could be obtained. Attenuators of four different elements were placed in front of the detector in a 'poor geometry' arrangement so that attenuation was due essentially to inelastic collisions which degrade the neutron energy below the fission threshold. A second detector was placed outside the concrete shielding In the collimated neutron beam in line with the neutron source, absorber, and first detector. Attenuation in it is caused by both inelastic and elastic scattering. By this arrangement the ratio of inelastic to total cross section can be determined directly in one experiment. The nuclear radii as calculated from the observed cross section, using the theory of the transparent nucleus, vary as 1.38 x 10(exp-13) A(exp(1/3)) cm. In this energy range the ratios of the inelastic to total cross sections are all less than one-half.

Book MASS YIELDS FROM FISSION BY NEUTRONS BETWEEN THERMAL AND 14 7 MEV

Download or read book MASS YIELDS FROM FISSION BY NEUTRONS BETWEEN THERMAL AND 14 7 MEV written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiochemically determined mass-yield curves are given for the fission of U235 and U238 by l4.7-Mev neutrons. Symmetric and to a less extent, very asymmetric modes of fission are more probable at that energy than in thermal fission. Yields of four fission products from the fission of U235 have been measured as a function of neutron energy in the range thermal to 14 Mev. The yields of eleven masses have been measured from the fission of Np237 by degraded fission spectrum neutrons. The mass-yield curve is similar to that from the thermal fission of Pu239 with a ratio of peak to valley yields of approximately 175. Relative yields of one peak fission product and four valley fission products have been determdned under the following conditions: fission of U235 and Pu239 with thermal neutrons; fission of U235 Pu/sup 239/ and U238 with fission spectrum neutrons; and fission of U/235 and Pu239 with the intermediate neutron spectrum at the center of the Los Alamos Fast Reactor. Absolute yields of Moss have been determined from the fission of U235, Pu239 with thermal neutrons. (auth).

Book Prompt Neutron Fission Spectrum Mean Energies for the Fissile Nuclides and 252Cf

Download or read book Prompt Neutron Fission Spectrum Mean Energies for the Fissile Nuclides and 252Cf written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international standard for a neutron spectrum is that produced from the spontaneous fission of 252Cf, while the thermal neutron induced fission neutron spectra for the four fissile nuclides, 233U, 235U, 239Pu, and 241Pu are of interest from the standpoint of nuclear reactors. The average neutron energies of these spectra are tabulated. The individual measurements are recorded with the neutron energy range measured, the method of detection as well as the average neutron energy for each author. Also tabulated are the measurements of the ratio of mean energies for pairs of fission neutron spectra. 75 refs., 9 tabs. (LEW).

Book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes

Download or read book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Radiation Technology Repo. This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses recent developments in neutron generator (NG) technology. It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.
