This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrastructural Pathology of the Cell and Matrix: Third Edition Volume 2 presents a comprehensive examination of the intracellular lesion. It discusses the analysis of pathological tissues using electron microscope. It addresses the experimental procedures made on the cellular level. Some of the topics covered in the book are the structure, distribution, and variations of rod-shaped microtubulated bodies; morphology of intracytoplasmic filaments; melanosome-producing and melanosome-containing cells in tumours; myofilaments in striated muscle; and pathological variations in size, shape, and numbers of microbodies. The intracytoplasmic and intranuclear annulate lamellae are fully covered. An in-depth account of the classification, history, and nomenclature of lysosomes are provided. The morphology and normal variations of melanosomes and anchoring fibrils are completely presented. A chapter is devoted to the endocytotic structures and cell processes. Another section focuses on the classification and nomenclature of fibrous components. The book can provide useful information to cytologists, pathologists, students, and researchers.

Book Developments in Lymphoid Cell Biology

Download or read book Developments in Lymphoid Cell Biology written by A. Arthur Gottlieb and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume the author by no means attempted to give a comprehensive view of the myriad of recent developments in immunology. The author has attempted, after introducing sufficient background in chapter 1, to highlight certain areas of lymphoid cell biology which are given less attention in current thinking but which seem to the author to offer exciting prospects for research. In other cases, the important topics of transplantation and tolerance are looked at from points of view which are somewhat less conventional in the hope that these aspects may stimulate others to look at the yet unsolved problems in these areas. In making the selection of topics and indeed in the selection of references within each chapter, the contributors and the author have attempted to select those which offered what seemed to be the best sources of information. They do not wish to minimize the important contributions of others but are guided by constraints of brevity and cogent expression.

Book Bacteriophages and Biofilms

Download or read book Bacteriophages and Biofilms written by Stephen T. Abedon and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacteriophages (phages) are the viruses of bacteria and biofilms that represent a frequent niche for bacteria, where they are embedded in extensive extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and can be structured into complex microcolonies. As a consequence of the resulting spatial structure and heterogeneity, phage-bacterial interactions within biofilms can be more complicated than those between phages and planktonic bacteria. This book presents and discusses research which provides a better understanding of the biology of phages interacting with biofilms.

Book Macrolide Antibiotics

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. Schönfeld
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2002-03-01
  • ISBN : 9783764361860
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Macrolide Antibiotics written by W. Schönfeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-03-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are only very few chemical classes of antibiotics in medical use, and these have originated over a span of more than 60 years of research. Almost half a century ago, the first member of the macrolides, erythromycin, was introduced as a treatment option for bacterial infections. Erythromycin is a very complex fermentation product obtained from the soil bacterium Saccharopolyspora ery thraea (originally named Streptomyces erythreus). The success of erythromycin, based on its efficacy and tolerability, stimulated researchers throughout the world to undertake intense efforts to understand the biology and chemistry of macrolides and to use this experience to improve the properties of this compound class. The second generation of macrolides, based on chemical modifications of erythromy cin, is currently being in broad use, especially for treatment of respiratory tract infections. We presently foresee the introduction of a new generation of macro lides, i. e. the ketolides, which have the potential to overcome rising resistance problems. This monograph is intended to give the interested reader an overview on "macrolide experience", covering important areas from basic research to clinical use. Starting from a historic overview, the essential basic parameters - efficacy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacology - are highlighted in order to introduce the reader to the rationale for clinical use of macrolides. The following group of chapters cover the complex chemistry of the macro lactone structures, giving historic background, basic structure-activity relation ships of various derivatization strategies, and perspectives for future discovery of new semisynthetic macrolide antibiotics.

Book Immunobiology of the Macrophage

Download or read book Immunobiology of the Macrophage written by David S. Nelson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immunobiology of the Macrophage presents an account of the state of knowledge of the immunobiology of the macrophage. The book's contributors—immunologists of diverse scientific and geographic backgrounds—have been encouraged to give personal accounts of developments in their special fields of interest as well as critical surveys of the backgrounds leading to these developments. The book begins with a study on the functions of macrophages in the initiation and regulation of antibody responses in vitro. This is followed by separate chapters on topics such as the role of macrophages in making antigen more immunogenic and less tolerogenic; functional distinctions between macrophages at different sites; and the role of the macrophage in antigen recognition by T lymphocytes. Subsequent chapters examine interactions between macrophages and lymphocytes in the production of interferon and other mediators of cellular immunity; macrophage cell lines and their uses in immunobiology; and cytotoxic macrophages in allograft rejection.
