Book Degradation of Synthetic Based Drilling Mud Base Fluids by Gulf of Mexico Sediments Final Report

Download or read book Degradation of Synthetic Based Drilling Mud Base Fluids by Gulf of Mexico Sediments Final Report written by United States Department of the Interior and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important consideration in the environmental assessment of deep-sea drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico is the discharge of cuttings coated with synthetic-based fluids (SBF). Synthetic-based fluids are one type of nonaqueous drilling fluid and are used in drilling mud to lubricate the drill bit, control reservoir pressure, and bring rock chips, or cuttings, to the surface. Synthetic-based fluids, which can be composed of linear alpha olefins, internal olefins, esters, or paraffins, are released into the marine environment as a residue on the cuttings as they are discharged. This study addressed the fate of the synthetic base fluid portion of the drilling mud in Gulf of Mexico sediments by determining the potential of marine sediment microbes to degrade representative SBF under deep-sea conditions. A model to predict how fast the sediment will recover under realistic conditions was developed to form a scientific basis for evaluating impacts from the discharge of SBF in the deep-sea. This study also examined the effect of the discharge on the microbial ecology of the sediments.

Book excerpt: The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is a agency within the U.S. Department of Interior. BOEM has four sections that cover the United States' waters: Alaska OCS Region, Pacific OCS Region, Gulf of Mexico OCS Region and the Atlantic OCS Region. The Gulf of Mexico OCS Region is responsible for almost 160 million acres of lands off the coast of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Currently, more than 31 million acres are leased for gas and oil development, and six million are actually producing oil and natural gas. The Gulf of Mexico Region is in charge of addressing the Environment, Leasing and Plans, and Resource Evaluation. The publish a variety of documents with topics such as: Marine Biology, Natural Gas, Oil Spills, Transportation, Chemical Products, etc. This is one of those publications.

Book Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids

Download or read book Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids written by Ryen Caenn and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The petroleum industry in general has been dominated by engineers and production specialists. The upstream segment of the industry is dominated by drilling/completion engineers. Usually, neither of those disciplines have a great deal of training in the chemistry aspects of drilling and completing a well prior to its going on production. The chemistry of drilling fluids and completion fluids have a profound effect on the success of a well. For example, historically the drilling fluid costs to drill a well have averaged around 7% of the overall cost of the well, before completion. The successful delivery of up to 100% of that wellbore, in many cases may be attributable to the fluid used. Considered the "bible" of the industry, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids, first written by Walter Rogers in 1948, and updated on a regular basis thereafter, is a key tool to achieving successful delivery of the wellbore. In its Sixth Edition, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids has been updated and revised to incorporate new information on technology, economic, and political issues that have impacted the use of fluids to drill and complete oil and gas wells. With updated content on Completion Fluids and Reservoir Drilling Fluids, Health, Safety & Environment, Drilling Fluid Systems and Products, new fluid systems and additives from both chemical and engineering perspectives, Wellbore Stability, adding the new R&D on water-based muds, and with increased content on Equipment and Procedures for Evaluating Drilling Fluid Performance in light of the advent of digital technology and better manufacturing techniques, Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids has been thoroughly updated to meet the drilling and completion engineer's needs. Explains a myriad of new products and fluid systems Cover the newest API/SI standards New R&D on water-based muds New emphases on Health, Safety & Environment New Chapter on waste management and disposal

Book Fate and Effects of a Spill of Synthetic Based Drilling Fluid at Mississippi Canyon Block 778

Download or read book Fate and Effects of a Spill of Synthetic Based Drilling Fluid at Mississippi Canyon Block 778 written by U. S. Department U.S. Department of the Interior and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is a relatively new activity. The challenging conditions of deep water require new technologies and new drilling products (USDOI, MMS, 2002a). As a result, the spill scenarios and potential biological impacts may differ from those that occur in shallower waters. An actual spill associated with ultra-deepwater drilling presented an opportunity to evaluate such spills.
