Book Kinematic Models of Deformation in Southern California Constrained by Geologic and Geodetic Data

Download or read book Kinematic Models of Deformation in Southern California Constrained by Geologic and Geodetic Data written by Lori A. Eich and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a standardized fault geometry based on the Community Block Model, we create two analytic block models of the southern California fault system. We constrain one model with only geodetic data. In the other, we assign a priori slip rates to the San Andreas, Garlock, Helendale, Newport-Inglewood, Owens Valley, Sierra Madre, and Chino faults to create a joint geologic and geodetic model, using the a priori slip rates to refine the results in areas with limited geodetic data. Our results for the San Andreas fault are consistent with geologic slip rates in the north and south, but across the Big Bend area we find its slip rates to be slower than geologic rates. Our geodetic model shows right lateral slip rates of 19.8 + 1.3 mm/yr in the Mojave area and 17.3 ± 1.6 mm/yr near the Imperial fault; the San Gorgonio Pass area displays a left lateral slip rate of 1.8 + 1.7 mm/yr. Our joint geologic and geodetic model results include right lateral slip rates of 18.6 + 1.2 mm/yr in the Mojave area, 22.1 ± 1.6 mm/yr near the Imperial fault, and 9.5 1.4 mm/yr in the San Gorgonio Pass area. Both models show high values (10-13 1 mm/yr) of right lateral slip to the east of the Blackwater fault along the Goldstone, Calico, and Hidalgo faults. We show that substantially different block geometries in the Mojave can produce statistically similar model results due to sparse geodetic data.

Book High Geologic Slip Rates Since Early Pleistocene Initiation of the San Jacinto and San Felipe Fault Zones in the San Andreas Fault System Southern California USA

Download or read book High Geologic Slip Rates Since Early Pleistocene Initiation of the San Jacinto and San Felipe Fault Zones in the San Andreas Fault System Southern California USA written by and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The San Jacinto right-lateral strike-slip fault zone is crucial for understanding plate-boundary dynamics, regional slip partitioning, and seismic hazards within the San Andreas fault system of southern California, yet its age of initiation and long-term average slip rate are controversial. This synthesis of prior and new detailed studies in the western Salton Trough documents initiation of structural segments of the San Jacinto fault zone at or slightly before the 1.07 Ma base of the Jaramillo subchron. In Special Paper 475, five new estimates of displacement are developed using offset successions of crystalline rocks; distinctive marker beds in the late Cenozoic basin fill; analysis of strike-slip-related fault-bend folds; quantification of strain in folds at the tips of dextral faults; and gravity, magnetic, and geomorphic data sets."--Publisher's website.

Book Structural Geology Algorithms

Download or read book Structural Geology Algorithms written by Richard Waldron Allmendinger and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Structural Geology has been taught, largely unchanged, for the last 50 years or more. The lecture part of most courses introduces students to concepts such as stress and strain, as well as more descriptive material like fault and fold terminology. The lab part of the course usually focuses on practical problem solving, mostly traditional me-thods for describing quantitatively the geometry of structures. While the lecture may introduce advanced concepts such as tensors, the lab commonly trains the student to use a combination of graphical methods like orthographic or spherical projection, as well as a variety of plane trigonometry solutions to various problems. This leads to a disconnect between lecture concepts that require a very precise understanding of coor-dinate systems (e.g., tensors) and lab methods that appear to have no common spatial or mathematical foundation. Students have no chance to understand that, for example, seemingly unconnected constructions like down-plunge projections and Mohr circles share a common mathematical heritage: they are both graphical representations of coordinate transformations"--Provided by publisher.

Book The San Andreas Fault System

Download or read book The San Andreas Fault System written by Robert E. Powell and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1993 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of the ten chapters in this volume critically examine the geologic evidence that constrains timing and magnitude of movement on various faults of the San Andreas system, and they develop and discuss paleogeologic reconstructions based on these constraints. The volume offers new insight into the evolution of the San Andreas fault system,
