Book Defining the New Testament Logia on Divorce and Remarriage in a Pluralistic Context

Download or read book Defining the New Testament Logia on Divorce and Remarriage in a Pluralistic Context written by Yordan Kalev Zhekov and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian marriage is a permanent union which requires the commitment of both spouses for its maintenance through fulfillment of its stipulations. The failure of the fulfillment of the latter provides legitimate grounds for divorce and remarriage of the innocent party. This work employs a fourfold approach for the development of NT ethical argumentation based on Richard B. Hays' Moral Vision of the New Testament. The author establishes the proper contextual grounds for the NT study through formulation of the Old Testament perspective on marriage as covenant. The relevant NT passages are examined through historical-critical and narrative-critical methods. A critical study of the main Christian traditions leads to an ecumenical formulation of the theological conclusions. Pragmatic implementation of the thesis follows an examination of the contemporary pluralistic context and applications in both Christian communities and the larger society within its legislative system.

Book The Indissolubility of Marriage

Download or read book The Indissolubility of Marriage written by Matthew Levering and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-researched book explains why the Catholic Church continues to teach marital indissolubility and addresses the numerous contemporary challenges to that teaching. It surveys the patristic witness to marital indissolubility, along with Orthodox and Protestant views, as well as historical-critical biblical exegesis on the contested biblical passages. It also surveys the Catholic tradition from the Trent through Benedict XVI, and it examines a Catholic argument that the Catholic Church's teaching can and should change. Then it explores Amoris Laetitia, the papal exhortation from Pope Francis on marriage, and the various major responses to it, with the issue of marital indissolubility at the forefront. Finally, it retrieves Aquinas's theology of marital indissolubility as a contribution to deepening current theological discussions. The author argues that Amoris Laetitia upholds the traditional Catholic teaching that a valid and consummated Christian marriage is absolutely indissoluble, in accord with the teachings of Jesus and the Apostle Paul, as solemnly and authoritatively taught by the Council of Trent and affirmed by later popes and the Second Vatican Council. He says that Amoris Laetitia should be interpreted and implemented in light of the doctrine of marital indissolubility: implementations that undermine this doctrine should be avoided. Levering says that numerous contemporary Catholic theologians and biblical scholars are mistakenly turning the indissolubility of marriage into contingent dissolubility based upon whether the spouses continue to act in loving ways toward each other. The sacrament's gift of objective indissolubility is thereby undermined. Fortunately, the main interpreters of Amoris Laetitia, whose views have been approved by Pope Francis, insist that the Apostolic Exhortation does not change the doctrine of marital indissolubility in any way.

Book The New Testament Logia on Divorce

Download or read book The New Testament Logia on Divorce written by V. Norskov Olsen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The New Testament on marriage and divorce has exercised a deep influence upon Western civilisation. This is especially the case with the logia on divorce which are recorded in the Gospels of Matthew v. 32, XIX 3—12, Mark X. 2—12 and Luke XVI. 18. The Apostle Paul deals with the subject in 1 Corinthians VII. 1—15. Within the Christian churches the statements in these texts are considered authoritative concerning the questions of whether or not marriage is indissoluble, and whether divorce and remarriage are allowed for one or several reasons. The purpose of this study is to examine the interpretation of the New Testament divorce texts during the Reformation period. The significance of the exegetical results achieved by the reformers can be appreciated only in the light of the medieval sacramental concept of marriage and the work of the Christian humanists; accordingly, the investigation begins with an examination of these two subjects, as well as the reaction of Roman Catholic exegetes to the interpretation of Erasmus. The interpretations of Luther and his associates and those of the prominent Reformed theologians follow. The works of representative English theologians have been studied, beginning with Willian Tyndale and Thomas Cranmer and ending with John Milton, whose works on divorce from an exegetical point of view terminate a period during which the meaning of the divorce texts was explored.” ‑From the Foreword

Book Accompanied by a Believing Wife

Download or read book Accompanied by a Believing Wife written by Raymond F. Collins and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What light does the New Testament shed on the practice of celibacy for the sake of the kingdom? In his newest work, renowned Scripture scholar Raymond F. Collins turns his attention to the question, which, of course, has important implications for the church in our own day. Though the answer is not a simple one, and it does not necessarily translate automatically into clear contemporary ecclesial policy, it still serves as an important foundation for discussion. Collins gives careful consideration of the methodology to be used in approaching the question and to important aspects of the sociocultural context of first-century Palestine, within which the New Testament took form. He then explores what Jesus said to the disciples, several disciples' own statuses as married men, and Paul's teaching and personal example on marriage. Raymond Collins has served the church through his thoughtful and scholarly exegetical work for decades. This latest work of his will long be counted among his best.

Book The Single Life in the Roman and Later Roman World

Download or read book The Single Life in the Roman and Later Roman World written by Sabine R. Huebner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a variety of historical sources and methodological approaches, this book presents the first large-scale study of single men and women in the Roman world, from the Roman Republic to Late Antiquity and covering virtually all periods of the ancient Mediterranean. It asks how singleness was defined and for what reasons people might find themselves unmarried. While marriage was generally favoured by philosophers and legislators, with the arguments against largely confined to genres like satire and comedy, the advent of Christianity brought about a more complex range of thinking regarding its desirability. Demographic, archaeological and socio-economic perspectives are considered, and in particular the relationship of singleness to the Roman household and family structures. The volume concludes by introducing a number of comparative perspectives, drawn from the early Islamic world and from other parts of Europe down to and including the nineteenth century, in order to highlight possibilities for the Roman world.

Book Divorce in the New Testament

Download or read book Divorce in the New Testament written by Raymond F. Collins and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few New Testament texts have had their meaning debated so vigorously as those in which Jesus discusses divorce: Matthew 5:32, Matthew 19:6, 9; Mark 10:9-12; Luke 16:18; and 1 Cor 7:11. From the early Church, through there formation, and into the present day, they have continued to rouse debate within the Churches and among believers. This work focuses on one aspect of that debate; namely, what Jesus has to say regarding divorce when his sayings are interpreted in their literary and historical context. To aid in this contextual understanding, the sayings are studied in the order in which they were written down in ancient times. Not every aspect of the debate therefore is addressed - nor could it be on an issue of such personal and pastoral complexity. Yet it is the challenge of biblical scholars to study the Word of God - in all its complexity - and to try to make that Word understandable. This work is offered to scholars and believers alike in the hope of adding to that understanding.

Book A Difficult Passage

Download or read book A Difficult Passage written by Glenn A. Lafferty and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's nothing good about a divorce. It is one of the most painful experiences a person can endure. What's worse is that if one is a Christian and divorced, what he or she often finds is that the institution meant to heal the brokenhearted (the church) often sounds more like an adversary rather than an advocate. Too often they are intentionally re-classified as "second-class" Christians. Why is this so? Should this be so? A Difficult Passage is a call to rethink, in Biblical and compassionate terms, the traditional, conservative views of divorce and remarriage. Readers will navigate their way through difficult questions such as: What was God's original intent when He designed marriage? What role did history and culture play in shaping modern opinion and doctrine? Once a person is married, can they ever be considered unmarried in the eyes of God? Did God make provision for divorce as a corrective measure to insure justice for the innocent? Once divorced, can a person ever remarry? Does remarriage constitute perpetual sin? From where did the modern church get its marital views?

Book Apostasy Divorce Forty Years in the Wilderness of Divorce and Remarriage

Download or read book Apostasy Divorce Forty Years in the Wilderness of Divorce and Remarriage written by Stephen M. Weaver and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apostasy is defined as a falling away from, or a deliberate abandonment of, what had been established scriptural principles and doctrine. This is exactly where the broader Church is today on the doctrine of divorce and remarriage. Written from an Evangelical Protestant perspective we examine this apostasy and its ramifications to the broader Church, society and individuals. The authors' own 40 year journey vividly underscore the theme. Christians from the first 1900 years of the Church would not recognize today's doctrine as Christian. Jesus' exact teachings are examined in depth as are those of Paul. Jesus' definition of the divorced and remarried as adulterers is paramount to the entire discussion. Adultery is one listed reason for exclusion from the kingdom. The differences between legalism and grace are examined and explained. The outcomes to individuals, and society, are listed and backed with scripture, history, and facts; demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt.

Book Jesus Divorce and Remarriage

Download or read book Jesus Divorce and Remarriage written by Gordon J. Wenham and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did Jesus really say about divorce and remarriage? Challenging the evangelical near-consensus that Jesus permitted divorce and remarriage in certain circumstances, Gordon Wenham argues that while Jesus permitted separation in cases of sexual immorality, he did not permit divorce and remarriage. Presenting a revisitation and expansion of several decades of thought and debate on the topic, Wenham builds his case from a close reading of Jesus' teaching in the Gospels, showing how his teaching pushed against the culture of his day. In addition, Wenham brings in insights from ancient Near Eastern marriage laws, the Old Testament, the writings of Paul, and the earliest Christian interpreters of the Gospel divorce texts. Readers will be challenged by a careful biblical argument that provides a counterpoint to the majority view. No study on divorce and remarriage will be complete without considering Jesus, Divorce, and Remarriage.

Book Christian and Divorced

Download or read book Christian and Divorced written by Eitan Bar and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JUST RELEASED: A Brand New 2024 Release! Christian interpretations frequently overlook the Jewish cultural context of New Testament teachings and the background of the Old Testament, particularly noticeable in many Christian pastors' teachings on the controversial issue of divorce and remarriage in the Bible. Imagine a world where Moses' divorce permissions and Jesus' teachings in the New Testament aren't conflicting. Envision realizing that a lack of understanding of ancient laws, customs, and beliefs, such as the issue of the 'Agunah' - the very topic Jesus and the Pharisees frequently debated - has twisted the fundamentalist, often self-contradictory view of divorce and remarriage. And what if I told you that part of this confusion also stems from problematic modern Bible translations? You've likely encountered the notion that Jesus only condoned divorce in cases of adultery but not in other instances, such as abusive or toxic relationships. Or perhaps you've heard that "God hates divorce" - a poor mistranslation of Malachi 2:16. These and other verses, often taken out of their proper context, have been weaponized to demonize divorce as an inexcusable sin. In reality, divorce was intended to protect the well-being of the individuals in the marriage. This concise, straightforward book navigates the intricate biblical perspectives on the sensitive subjects of divorce and remarriage, offering a counterargument to the popular Christian Fundamentalism's view on divorce. We're not merely brushing over the topic; we're delving into the detailed intricacies of pertinent Bible verses, grounding them in both biblical and societal contexts. Prepare for a revealing journey into the original Hebrew and Greek meanings of these texts, which will offer you a deeper, non-Westernized, unfiltered understanding. Get ready to challenge and redefine your perceptions of what the Bible says about divorce! Upon completing this book, you'll be equipped with the intellectual tools needed to both understand and refute common misconceptions about the Bible's stance on divorce and remarriage. This includes the ability to critically evaluate and challenge the classic perspective of Christian fundamentalism, as illustrated by quotes like the following: "I don't think the Bible allows divorce and remarriage ever while the spouse is living. That's my radical, crazy, conservative, narrow, hard-nosed, very needed view in our divorce-happy culture." (Pastor John Piper) "Without exception, divorce is a product of sin, and God hates it. He never commands it, endorses it or blesses it." (Pastor John MacArthur) The book is divided into three main parts: Part I: Divorce & Remarriage in the Old Testament Part II: Divorce & Remarriage in the New Testament Part III: Divorce & Remarriage According to RationalityAbout the authorDr. Eitan Bar, a Jewish-Christian scholar with advanced Bible, apologetics, and theology degrees, is a unique combination. As a native Hebrew speaker and a Jewish Bible scholar, he combines his Jewish background with his Christian education and faith to offer a fresh perspective on various biblical topics. This book is part of Dr. Bar's series of "micro-books."
