Book The Malay House

Download or read book The Malay House written by Wan Burhanuddin B. Wan Abidin and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malay house is defined and described in the Malaysian context . Underlying principles or rules that make up the· house are derived from the analysis of its physical, spatial and functional elements and the variations that these elements exhibit. Tho rules are tested in the reconstruction of the Malay house. Changes based on hypothetical cases are then introduced to find out how the house would transform under these new sets of requirements. It is found that it is possible for a person, having not seen a Malay house prior to this, to reconstruct one based on the rules stated in this work. It is also found that new systems have to be added to the existing systems in the Malay house to meet the requirements for change. The addition of new systems however, do not mean the destruction of the tradition. It is hoped that this prototype would be the basis for further research in the Malay house.

Book Malay House and Its Woodcarving

Download or read book Malay House and Its Woodcarving written by Hazman Hazumi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the Malay house and its woodcarving looks for the governing factors responsiblefor the aesthetic characteristics of the Malay traditional architecture and arts. It views the Malay traditional house and woodcarving as important cultural heritage belong to the traditional Malay society that must be preserved. By conducting a fieldwork in various states in the Malay Peninsula, as well as nearby regions, a catalogue of visual documentation and archival data were accumulated over the course of the study. These data served as the primary data from which distinguished visual characteristics of the Malay house and woodcarving were extracted. The fieldwork was followed by a series of detailed analytical studies on the underlying geometrical principles of the traditional Malay house structures and woodcarving panels. By employhing both geometric and arithmetic proportional analyses on selected samples of the Malay house and woodcarving, the study revealed the existence of an integrated underlying principle govering the form, structure and composition of both the house and woodcarving panels. The results of the analyses provided conclusive evidence that the Malay traditional house adhered to the principles of dynamic geometries, which governed iits overall form, scale and commensurability between the house and its architectural elements. Based on this finding, the study embarked on a hands-on project in the form of the design and construction of a contemporary house employing principles based on the design wisdom of the traditional Malay house. The outcome of the project suggests that reviving the principles of the Malay traditional house is possible and can be beneficial for future generations.

Book Sustainable Houses and Living in the Hot Humid Climates of Asia

Download or read book Sustainable Houses and Living in the Hot Humid Climates of Asia written by Tetsu Kubota and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides information on the latest research findings that are useful in the context of designing sustainable houses and living in rapidly growing Asian cities. The book is composed of seven parts, comprising a total of 50 chapters written by 53 authors from various countries, mainly in the Asian region. Part I introduces vernacular houses in different Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Nepal, China, Thailand and Laos. Parts II and III then explore in depth indoor adaptive thermal comfort and occupants’ adaptive behavior, focusing especially on those in hot-humid climates. Part IV presents detailed survey results on household energy consumption in various tropical Asian cities, while Part V analyses the indoor thermal conditions in both traditional houses and modern houses in these countries. Several real-world sustainable housing practices in Asian cities are reviewed in the following part. The final part then discusses the vulnerability of expanding Asian cities to climate change and urban heat island. Today, approximately 35-40% of global energy is consumed in Asia, and this percentage is expected to rise further. Energy consumption has increased, particularly in the residential sector, in line with the rapid rise of the middle class. The majority of growing Asian cities are located in hot and humid climate regions, and as such there is an urgent need for designers to provide healthy and comfortable indoor environments that do not consume non-renewable energy or resources excessively. This book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in sustainable house design in the growing cities of Asia.
