Download or read book Department of Energy Progress Made Overseeing the Costs of Contractor Postretirement Benefits but Additional Actions Could Help Address Challenges written by Mark E. Gaffigan and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-12 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dept. of Energy (DOE) relies on contractors to conduct its mission activities. DOE reimburses these contractors for allowable costs, including the costs of providing pension and other postretirement benefits, such as retiree health care plans. Since the economic downturn, DOE has had to devote significantly more funding toward reimbursing these benefit costs, in part because of a decline in interest rates and asset values that has increased contractor pension contributions. In a challenging budgetary environment, further growth in these costs could put pressure on DOE's mission work. This report examines (1) the level of control DOE has over contractor pension and other postretirement benefit costs under its current business model and (2) the changes DOE has adopted since the national economic downturn to manage those costs and the extent to which those changes have enhanced its approach. Includes recommendations. Tables and figures. This is a print on demand report.

This book was released on 1989-02-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilization management (UM) has become a strong trend in health care cost containment. Under UM, some decisions are not strictly made by the doctor and patient alone. Instead, they are now checked by a reviewer reporting to an employer or other paying party who asks whether or not the proposed type or location of care is medically necessary or appropriate. This book presents current findings about how UM is faring in practice and how it compares with other cost containment approaches, with recommendations for improving UM program administration and clinical protocols and for conducting further research.

Book excerpt: As more and more Canadian boomers are approaching retirement, the transition from accumulating assets in their working years to creating a reliable stream of income in retirement is becoming a top-priority issue for a huge segment of the population. Based on the author's specialized experience in retirement income planning, this book will help readers to work through the many stages of their retirement and adapt their income plans to account for constantly changing health and family issues. The book will help you to: Combine government and personal sources of income most efficiently Determine which assets to use first and which to defer Preserve government benefits and entitlements that are in many cases needlessly wasted or lost Create results that are more survivor- and estate-friendly than traditional approaches Greatly reduce taxes on retirement income and to the aggregate estate. Your Retirement Income Blueprint lays out a six-step process for "taking apart" accumulated assets, making the most out of what you have taken a lifetime to save, and creating an income that lasts as long as you do.
Download or read book Confronting Managerialism written by Robert R. Locke and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting Managerialism offers a scathing critique of the influence of neoclassical economics and modern finance on business school teaching and management practice. Locke and Spender show that responsible management has given way to 'managerialism', whereby an elite caste of businessmen disconnected from any ethical considerations call the shots. The book traces the loss of managers' earlier social concerns, amply encouraged by management education's transformation since the 1960's, especially in the US. It also questions not only the social ethics of the US management caste but its management efficacy compared to systems of management that are highly employee participatory and dependent, such as in Germany and Japan. A unique, topical and controversial look at a subject that impacts us all.
Download or read book Regulating Mergers and Acquisitions of U S Electric Utilities Industry Concentration and Corporate Complication written by Scott Hempling and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when electric utility monopolies pursue their acquisition interests—undisciplined by competition, and insufficiently disciplined by the regulators responsible for replicating competition? Since the mid-1980s, mergers and acquisitions of U.S. electric utilities have halved the number of local, independent utilities. Mostly debt-financed, these transactions have converted retiree-suitable investments into subsidiaries of geographically scattered conglomerates. Written by one of the U.S.’s leading regulatory thinkers, this book combines legal, accounting, economic and financial analysis of the 30-year march of U.S. electricity mergers with insights from the dynamic field of behavioral economics.
