Book A Defense of the Nicene Definition

Download or read book A Defense of the Nicene Definition written by St. Athanasius and published by Assumption Press. This book was released on 2014-02-16 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Athanasius of Alexandria (298-373), Confessor and Doctor of the Church, was one of the principal architects of the Nicene Creed. He persisted throughout his life, in and out of persecution, in explaining and defending Christ's divinity and the teachings of the Nicene Council. In his Defense of the Nicene Definition, Athanasius defends the specific doctrine of the Council of Nicaea that the Father and the Son are "one in substance." Responding to Arian efforts to show from Scripture that Christ is a created being, Athanasius examines the witness of Isaiah and the Gospels, showing that Christ is an eternal person, because he possesses the same undivided divine substance as the Father. This translation by Bl. John Henry Newman, one of England's greatest modern theologians, combines the best of Newman's extensive scholarship of the Greek language and Early Church and his high mastery of English prose. He provides a clear and accessible entryway into the thought of one of the Church's greatest and holiest teachers.

Book Scripture in Doctrinal Dispute

Download or read book Scripture in Doctrinal Dispute written by Frances M. Young and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Scripture function in early arguments about doctrine? Historical criticism has revealed a gap between scripture and the mainstream doctrines that define Christianity today. Not the least of these are the Trinity and two natures of Christ—widely accepted since the fifth century, but seemingly unfounded in historical readings of Scripture. How did these dogmas become so integral to the faith in the first place? Frances M. Young tackles this monumental question in a culmination of decades of biblical and patristic research. The second of two volumes, Scripture in Doctrinal Dispute illuminates the role of biblical hermeneutics in the debates that forged Christian dogma on the nature of God. Young shows how the theological commitments to God as the sole creator of all else from nothing shaped fourth- and fifth-century disputes over Christology and the Trinity. Played out in the great councils of the fourth century and beyond, these conflicts drove the need to discern doctrinal coherence in scripture. The different sides relied on different prooftexts, and the rule of faith served as the criterion by which scriptural interpretation was measured—thereby forming the basis of the creeds. Nuanced and ecumenical, Scripture in Doctrinal Dispute completes Young’s magnum opus, closing the gap between scripture and Christian tradition. Young’s magisterial study holds widespread implications for not only patristics but also exegesis and systematic theology.

  • ISBN : 1625647522
  • Pages : 207 pages

Download or read book The Great Athanasius written by John R. Tyson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Athanasius is an introductory survey of the life and work of the most dynamic pastor-theologian of the fourth century. From his birth and early years in Alexandria to the "Golden Decade," the book charts the life and work of Athanasius through a close study of his main writings and other important works. Central to his story is the "Arian controversy," the Council of Nicea, and the subsequent difficulties that emerged in building a consensus around the "very God, very Man" affirmation of the Nicene Creed. The eventual triumph of the theology of the Nicene Creed was largely due to his tireless efforts, which are carefully chronicled in this work. Though a controversial figure in his own lifetime, through both his theological insight and ecclesiastical leadership, and in his fidelity to his faith convictions, Athanasius proved to be "the great" church father and theologian of his age and one of the seminal Christian thinkers of all time.

Book All That Is in God

Download or read book All That Is in God written by James E. Dolezal and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unknown to many, increasing numbers of conservative evangelicals are denying basic tenets of classical Christian teaching about God, with departures occurring even among those of the Calvinistic persuasion. James E. Dolezal’s All That Is in God provides an exposition of the historic Christian position while engaging with these contemporary deviations. His convincing critique of the newer position he styles “theistic mutualism” is philosophically robust, systematically nuanced, and biblically based. It demonstrates the need to maintain the traditional viewpoint, particularly on divine simplicity, and spotlights the unfortunate implications for other important Christian doctrines—such as divine eternality and the Trinity—if it were to be abandoned. Arguing carefully and cogently that “all that is in God is God Himself,” the work is sure to stimulate debate on the issue in years to come.
