Download or read book Fluxgate Magnetometer SSM for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program DMSP Block 5D 2 Flight 7 written by Frederick J. Rich and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A triaxial fluxgate magnometer has been successfully flown on a satellite of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program. This instrument is sensitive enough to be used for scientific studies as well as for spacecraft operations. Unlike previous scientific-quality magnetometers in space, the sensor for this instrument is not mounted on a long boom but is mounted on the outer skin of the satellite, under the thermal blanket. While magnetic signals from the spacecraft are noticeable in the data, they do not significantly degrade the quality of the data. Algorithms are now available to process the magnetic field data in a quick format. This enables a researcher to locate in the data the signature of disturbances in the earth's magnetic field due to geophysical events. In particular, the signature of field-aligned currents associated with high-latitude phenomena such as aurora can be found in the data. Additional keywords: Ionospheres; Geomagnetic fields; F7 spacecraft.
Download or read book Satellite Observations of the Earth s Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-07-03 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report addresses the transition of research satellites, instruments, and calculations into operational service for accurately observing and predicting the Earth's environment. These transitions, which take place in large part between NASA and NOAA, are important for maintaining the health, safety, and prosperity of the nation, and for achieving the vision of an Earth Information System in which quantitative information about the complete Earth system is readily available to myriad users. Many transitions have been ad hoc, sometimes taking several years or even decades to occur, and others have encountered roadblocksâ€"lack of long-range planning, resources, institutional or cultural differences, for instanceâ€"and never reached fruition. Satellite Observations of Earth's Environment recommends new structures and methods that will allow seamless transitions from research to practice.

Download or read book Spies and Shuttles written by James E. David and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this real life spy saga, James E. David reveals the extensive and largely hidden interactions between NASA and U.S. defense and intelligence departments. The story begins with the establishment of NASA in 1958 and follows the agency through its growth, not only in scope but also in complexity. In Spies and Shuttles, David digs through newly declassified documents to ultimately reveal how NASA became a strange bedfellow to the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He tracks NASA’s early cooperation—supplying cover stories for covert missions, analyzing the Soviet space program, providing weather and other scientific data from its satellites, and monitoring missile tests—that eventually devolved into NASA’s reliance on DoD for political and financial support for the Shuttle. David also examines the restrictions imposed on such activities as photographing the Earth from space and the intrusive review mechanisms to ensure compliance. The ties between NASA and the intelligence community have historically remained unexplored, and David’s riveting book is the first to investigate the twists and turns of this labyrinthine relationship.
