Book Defending South Carolina s Coast

Download or read book Defending South Carolina s Coast written by Rick Simmons and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Defending South Carolina's Coast: The Civil War from Georgetown to Little River, area native Rick Simmons relates the often overlooked stories of the upper South Carolina coast during the Civil War. As a base of operations for more than three thousand troops early in the war and the site of more than a dozen forts, almost every inch of the coast was affected by and hotly contested during the Civil War. From the skirmishes at Fort Randall in Little River and the repeated Union naval bombardments of Murrells Inlet to the unrealized potential of the massive fortifications at Battery White and the sinking of the USS Harvest Moon in Winyah Bay, the region's colorful Civil War history is unfolded here at last.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the smallest branch of the U.S. military, the U.S. Coast Guard. Historical information covers its roots in early America and the Revenue Cutter Service promoted by Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, and its work during the American Civil War, World War I, and Hurricane Katrina. The coast guard's range of missions, including performing search and rescue missions, protecting U.S. harbors from terrorist attacks, preventing smuggling of illegal drugs, maintaining navigational aids, patrolling the North Atlantic Ocean for icebergs, responding to environmental disasters such as oil spills, promoting boating safety, keeping waterways open and safe, and providing coastal defense of foreign shores such as in Iraq, are highlighted for the reader. Chapters also cover the coast guard's organization by hierarchy, including a sidebar of officer and enlisted ranks, its work as part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the duties of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Coast Guard Reserve, requirements for enlistment, training, and the Coast Guard Academy. The book also describes coast guard assets such as cutters, boats, and aircraft including the HC-130 Hercules airplane, the HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, and their duties, size, and range, and the coast guard's current and future plans to upgrade equipment. Full-color photographs, sidebars, fun facts, a graphic timeline, a glossary, and an index accompany this easy-to-read text.

Book Managed Realignment A Viable Long Term Coastal Management Strategy

Download or read book Managed Realignment A Viable Long Term Coastal Management Strategy written by Luciana S. Esteves and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managed realignment has been a preferred coastal management strategy in England in the 21st century and has also been increasingly implemented elsewhere. Climate change and environmental and financial concerns have led to a shift from the traditional ‘hold-the-line’ approach of coastal protection towards more flexible soft engineering options. Managed realignment is a relatively new soft engineering alternative aiming to provide sustainable flood risk management with added environmental and socio-economic benefits by creating space for coastal habitats to develop more dynamically. The natural adaptive capacity of coastal habitats and the ecosystem services they provide underpin the sustainability of managed realignment. However, many definitions of managed realignment exist and the understanding of what the term actually represents in practice has evolved through time and varies regionally. This book clarifies the definitions and terminology used in the literature and proposes that managed realignment is used as a general term that encompasses the many different methods of implementation worldwide, including: removal, breach and realignment of defences; controlled tidal restoration (which includes regulated tidal exchange and controlled reduced tide); and managed retreat. These methods of implementation are explained and illustrated with examples from around the world. In addition to a general overview of emerging policies and current practices, specific chapters discuss approaches adopted in different locations, including the Netherlands, the UK and Maui (USA). The UK experience is presented from the perspectives of three sectors: the National Trust (a charity organisation that owns 10% of the coastline of England and Wales), the Environment Agency (the organisation responsible for implementing government policy concerning flood and erosion risk) and a private consultant involved in the planning, design and delivery of managed realignment projects. Taking a wider perspective to consider the range of implementation methods, the viability of managed realignment as a long-term coastal management strategy is discussed. Recent national and regional strategies worldwide give managed realignment an increasing role in climate change and flood risk management. Gaining stakeholders and public support is fundamental for the success of emerging coastal management strategies. However, public perception and stakeholders engagement are often cited as a factor limiting the wider uptake of managed realignment. Results from a recent survey are used to benchmark the current thinking about the potential, the performance and the limitations of managed realignment in the UK and elsewhere. Current opinions about managed realignment are often not clearly defined, partly due to many projects being relatively recent. There is a general perception of great potential to provide sustainable flood risk management with added environmental benefits. However, the views of stakeholders are considerably more negative and notably contrast with the views of practitioners and researchers. The only clear and dominant agreement across all groups of respondents is that better understanding about the long-term evolution of sites is needed.

Book The Personnel of Sea Coast Defense Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Personnel of Sea Coast Defense Classic Reprint written by Peter Smith Michie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Personnel of Sea-Coast Defense This table shows at a glance, that this force is entirely inade quate for the defense of the sea-coast fortifications designed to protect our cities and harbors. For, considering the Atlantic coast alone, it appears that but three batteries are assigned to the great Northern bay extending from New Brunswick to Cape Cod, but two batteries at St. Augustine for the whole Southern bay from Cape Hatteras to Key West, while the great Central bay from Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras, though rich in fine harbors and great cities, has but twenty-two batteries distributed among eight garrisoned works. But a single battery comprising 44 officers and men cannot be called a protection for the whole coast of Maine; neither can two batteries insure the safety of Boston, and the Massachusetts coast; nor is New York defensible, with but two batteries covering the East River approach and with but seven at the most, that by the Narrows. Indeed these scattered fragments of the regiments of artillery are not garrisons, but rather care takers of the works at which they are stationed, and so long as the Artillery retains its present numerical strength, the coast and frontier must remain inadequately defended.
