Book Countdown to Socialism

Download or read book Countdown to Socialism written by Anthea Jeffery and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-19 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With growth stalling, joblessness at crisis levels, and governance unravelling, most South Africans cannot fathom why the ANC does not embark on meaningful reform. The answer lies in what is seldom raised: the ruling party's unwavering determination to take the country by incremental steps from capitalism to socialism. This transformation is being implemented via a Moscow-inspired 'national democratic revolution' (NDR) dating back many decades. Despite the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, the ANC/SACP alliance still sees the NDR as offering the 'most direct route' to socialism in South Africa – and hence as its bedrock strategy. The NDR has been implemented in many different spheres since 1994. By way of example, NDR interventions have already made millions of people unemployable and the mining sector largely 'uninvestable'. They now aim at land expropriation without compensation (EWC) and the effective nationalisation of private healthcare and pensions. The NDR is the key to understanding ANC rule over some 30 years – yet most South Africans have been kept in the dark on it. This book aims to fill that gap. Written in clear and simple language, it provides an indispensable primer on the NDR and its role in the countdown to socialism in South Africa.

Book Mzala Nxumalo Leftist Thought and Contemporary South Africa

Download or read book Mzala Nxumalo Leftist Thought and Contemporary South Africa written by Robert J. Balfour and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a tribute to the revolutionary intellectual and leader Mzala Nxumalo, this book discusses the significance of his work in the context of contemporary South African left politics. It explores the history and struggle of the apartheid era that preceded the advent of democracy to analyze a crucial aspect of the national question – that is, the quest for the establishment of a united South Africa to overcome racist and sexist policies that create and nurture divisions among black people. The subjects in this book deal with a wide range of topics, including the new social, economic and political challenges facing democratic South Africa; the need to reexamine the critique of capitalism in the 21st century; the relationship between race, class and community struggles; and the ecological challenges under capitalism. Book The Fall of the ANC Continues

Download or read book The Fall of the ANC Continues written by Prince Mashele and published by Pan Macmillan South africa. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘On the basis of the current state of politics in South Africa – of corruption, factionalism, the use of politics as a means of accumulation, all of which are abundant in the ANC – we have come to the conclusion that, if the party does not make a serious U-turn, it will ruin itself, and our country at the same time. This will not go on forever, for newer generations will, to avoid further ruin, act to bring about political change. We have faith in the rational capacity of human beings, even as we know that history reminds us that humankind can sometimes be foolish.’ Political governance in South Africa has collapsed. Scandals of corruption, evidence of nepotism, rampant maladministration in provinces, incompetence in public offices and a general decline in the quality of leadership are there for all to see. In the authors’ view, this state of affairs has its origins in the messiness and collapse of the African National Congress. As helplessness deepens in our society, concerned citizens ask: What will happen to South Africa? The Fall of the ANC Continues: What Next? seeks to answer this question of the fate that awaits the country.

Book South Africa Limits To Change

Download or read book South Africa Limits To Change written by Hein Marais and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2001-09-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the rich structural and political understandings of radical South African intellectuals, this book explains why the South African government has been unable to breach the boundaries of change erected by the privileged classes. It reveals why it has adopted conservative economic policies, and why the country's popular movement has failed to press home more radical opinions. Hein Marais compellingly probes the hidden dynamics of South Africa's transition, arguing that the democratic breakthrough was much less open-ended than generally believed.

Book Up in Arms

Download or read book Up in Arms written by Raenette Taljaard and published by Jacana Media. This book was released on 2012 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the personal story of a young female parliamentarian who entered public life with expectations awakened by Nelson Mandela's presidency, only to become disenchanted with party politics and with the moral meltdown she experienced within Parliament during those years. Documenting South Africa's arms deal--a controversial series of financial and political scandals--this stirring work serves as a reminder that it was not only reputations that were damaged by the saga, but also core institutions of the country's new democracy. Chief among them was Parliament, which, when faced by the challenge to hold those responsible accountable, failed dismally to engage the core ethical and moral concerns--among them, corruption--that continue to plague the country. An insider's look into political drama and intrigue, this memoir details the momentous series of events in the life of South Africa's second democratic Parliament.

Book The South African Communist Party

Download or read book The South African Communist Party written by Thomas Stanley Kolasa and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe in the early 1990s, communist parties are widely regarded as passe or irrelevant. But these parties still exist, act and sometimes thrive in various corners of the world. This comprehensive history describes how the South African Communist Party has not only survived but flourished in a harsh political environment. Formed in 1921 as an umbrella organization of leftist groups, the SACP for decades fought against the racist Apartheid regime, ascending to power in 1994 with its senior alliance partner, the African National Congress. Approaching its centennial, the SACP now faces possibly its greatest challenge: working towards a socialist future for South Africa while governing a diverse and complex capitalist country.

Book Defending Identity

Download or read book Defending Identity written by Natan Sharansky and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is better prepared to confront challenges and defend principles in a volatile modern world? Those with strong national, religious, ethnic, or tribal identities who accept democracy, or democrats who renounce identity as a kind of divisive prejudice? Natan Sharansky, building on his personal experience as a dissident, argues that valueless cosmopolitanism, even in democracies, is dangerous. Better to have hostile identities framed by democracy than democrats indifferent to identity. In a vigorous, insightful challenge to the left and right alike, Natan Sharansky, as he has proved repeatedly, is at the leading edge of the issues that frame our times.
