Book excerpt: In 2001, the DoD identified performance based logistics (PBL) as the preferred weapon system support strategy. Within DoD, PBL is the purchase of performance outcomes, such as system availability, rather than the purchase of individual elements of logistics support -- such as parts, repairs, and engineering support. Although PBL initially arose from efforts to reduce support costs, questions have arisen about whether PBL has reduced support costs as originally intended. This report evaluates the extent to which DoD has used business case analyses to guide decisions related to PBL arrangements and the impact PBL arrangements have had on weapon system support costs. Includes recommendations. Charts and tables.

Book United States Army Logistics

Download or read book United States Army Logistics written by Steve R. Waddell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can train men to fight. You can plan for the invasion. But you can't have success on the battlefield if you cannot move the men and material into position. Success is not possible without logistical support and capabilities. The U.S. Army's logistics system began with practically nothing and through numerous conflicts and periods of peace has developed into a first rate supply system capable of supporting the global military commitments of the present day. This work presents the history of U.S. Army logistics as one of evolution, trial and error, and occasionally revolutionary change over a period of two hundred plus years. It is important that logisticians and combat leaders alike understand how the United States Army logistical system developed; the challenges that had to be overcome; and the successes and failures encountered along the way. Creating the U.S. Army in 1775 proved to be easy compared to the task of keeping the army adequately supplied over the short and long term. The availability of resources, industrial capacity, size of the army, geographic scope of operations, organization of the logistics system, competent leadership, congressional support, funding, and new technology have, and continue to impact the logistical system on a daily basis. Each new period of peace or war has brought new challenges and requirements. This work is broken into two key parts. First, to inform the reader on the basic history of U.S. Army Logistics. Second, to identify the key factors that influenced the development of the logistical system.

Book Defense Logistics for the 21st Century

Download or read book Defense Logistics for the 21st Century written by William G. T. Tuttle and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last comprehensive study of defense logistics was published in 1959. In the ensuing forty-five years a revolutionary change in information technology and defense strategy has swept the field and mandated a new understanding of the objectives and principles of military logistics. The author, renowned defense logistics expert General William Tuttle, covers all aspects of the subject including force projection, force sustainment, and minimizing the logistics "footprint" in battle spaces. Within these objectives, he includes five principles that are employed to assess the effectiveness of the process and identifies their shortfalls and remedies. He also illuminates the major influences of culture and politics on defense logistics and proposes ways to minimize their adverse impact on combat readiness. Written for defense logistics leaders--those currently coping with the challenges and those logisticians aspiring to lead--and for everyone involved in the complexities of planning and strategy, this up-to-date volume is sure to become a hallmark in the field.

Book Military Logistics Made Easy

Download or read book Military Logistics Made Easy written by James H. Henderson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You already know that logistics is hard, it should not be, but it just is. The key components to supply and movement consist of receive, store, issue, and move. It should be that simple. Bottom line: it just is not that simple. There are too many moveable parts where the synergy of the operation could provide a scenario where the combined requirements needed to sustain a theater are greater than the sum of their individual effects or capabilities. . This book outlines some of these logistical components and their doctrinal relationship to the operation, as well as provides some new ideas. . The chapters are formatted in a fashion that offer the reader the doctrinal concept that the operation or function is based on, and then presents new theories on how to better execute the logistical function or capability as it relates to the operation. . The goal is to discuss those hard logistical topics and their conception to improve the general knowledge and understanding on "why it happens", and "how we can improve the outcome".
