Book US Defence Strategy from Vietnam to Operation Iraqi Freedom

Download or read book US Defence Strategy from Vietnam to Operation Iraqi Freedom written by Robert R. Tomes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-12-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: US Defence Strategy from Vietnam to Operation Iraqi Freedom examines the thirty-year transformation in American military thought and defence strategy that spanned from 1973 through 2003. During these three decades, new technology and operational practices helped form what observers dubbed a 'Revolution in Military Affairs' in the 1990s and a 'New American Way of War' in the 2000s. Robert R. Tomes tells for the first time the story of how innovative approaches to solving battlefield challenges gave rise to non-nuclear strategic strike, the quest to apply information technology to offset Soviet military advantages, and the rise of 'decisive operations' in American military strategy. He details an innovation process that began in the shadow of Vietnam, matured in the 1980s as Pentagon planners sought an integrated nuclear-conventional deterrent, and culminated with battles fought during blinding sandstorms on the road to Baghdad in 2003. An important contribution to military innovation studies, the book also presents an innovation framework applicable to current defence transformation efforts. This book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, US defence policy and US politics in general.

Book Ministry of Defence Climate Change and Sustainability Strategic Approach

Download or read book Ministry of Defence Climate Change and Sustainability Strategic Approach written by Great Britain. Ministry of Defence and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The character of warfare is changing fast; so is the climate. Both issues are changing the way our military fight, live and train in unfamiliar ways. Linking these issues together, they both demand that we adapt to the new circumstances that we face and take transformative action now. We need to change mindsets, and the way we operate in peace, in war and in persistent competition. Now firmly a Defence problem, climate change is a significant challenge. Without adequate assessment of its effects, we leave ourselves exposed. We cannot let our capabilities become less effective against vulnerabilities we cannot see clearly. We have to afford to keep up with the pace of change. Defence is on the threshold of innovation and modernisation through the Integrated Review. The climate change and sustainability strategic approach is about embracing essential elements of this modernisation which Defence cannot afford to ignore. The imperative could not be clearer: Defence must and will act now.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Science and technology (S&T) is essential to provide the technological and knowledge advantage necessary to aid the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), collectively referred to as DND/CAF, in preparing for the risks posed by climate change and developing environmentally sustainable operations. The Defence Climate Resilience and Environmental Sustainability Science & Technology strategy (hereafter referred to as, the Strategy, or CRESST) identifies ways in which S&T efforts can help in the mitigation of DND/CAF's environmental impacts, while also supporting the adaptation of its infrastructure, workforce, and all orders of business to become more sustainable and climate resilient. The Strategy will also enable DND/CAF to leverage S&T efforts in contributing to departmental and Government of Canada climate change and sustainability targets and commitments. Encompassing a long-term perspective, the CRESST provides a guide towards opportunities for collaborative partnerships, knowledge exchange, and targeted defence research within three strategic objectives, all in the context of defence and security: 1. Conduct research to enable climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability, including in areas such as power and energy transition, pollution reduction, mitigation of environmental impacts, and informing procurement; 2. Assess challenges, risks, and opportunities associated with the environment and climate change, including through examining the impact on DND/CAF activities and forecasting energy needs and costs; 3. Conduct research to support climate change adaptation and resilience, focusing on technologies, methods and practices for adaptation, as well as Arctic-specific requirements"--Executive summary, page 2.

Book excerpt: Recent experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans have highlighted the importance of environmental considerations. These range from protecting soldier health and disposing of hazardous waste to building water supply systems and other activities that help achieve national goals in the post-conflict phase of contingency operations. The Army has become increasingly involved with environmental issues in every contingency operation and must be better prepared to deal with them. This study assesses whether existing policy, doctrine, and guidance adequately address environmental activities in post-conflict military operations and reconstruction. Findings are based on reviews of top-level policy and doctrine, analysis of operational experience, extensive interviews with diverse Army personnel, and a review of operational documentation and literature. From these sources, a database of 111 case studies was created. The research showed that environmental concerns can have far-reaching and significant impacts on the Army, both direct and indirect, especially in terms of cost, current operations, soldier health, diplomatic relations, reconstruction activities, and the ultimate success of the operation or the broader mission. Some evidence suggests that environmental problems may have even contributed to insurgency in Iraq. Recommendations include updating current policy and doctrine to fully address environmental considerations in contingency operations; ensuring that contractors are carefully selected and managed; and transmitting proactive field environmental practices and lessons throughout the Army.
