Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American writer Sarah Orne Jewett's compilation of works is titled "Deephaven and Selected Stories and Sketches." Originally published in 1877, the book demonstrates Jewett's astute observation of rural life and her talent for capturing the subtleties of interpersonal interactions. "Deephaven," a compilation of connected stories set in a fictional New England coastal hamlet, is the book's main attraction. Jewett creates a realistic picture of the people and dynamics of Deephaven through vivid and in-depth descriptions. The chosen tales and illustrations that Jewett created after "Deephaven" exhibit her talent for capturing the intricacies of human nature as well as the allure of small-town living. "Deephaven and Selected Stories and Sketches" is praised for its sensitive portrayals of human relationships, vivid portrayals of rural life, and late 19th-century contribution to American literary realism. The anthology is still a living example of Jewett's skill as a writer and her ability to convey the atmosphere of her day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Trends in Narratology offers an overview of cutting-edge approaches to theories of storytelling. The introduction details how new emphases on cognitive processing, non-prose and multimedia narratives, and interdisciplinary approaches to narratology have altered how narration, narrative, and narrativity are understood. The volume also introduces a third post-classical direction of research ‐ comparative narratology ‐ and describes how developments in Germany, Israel, and France may be compared with Anglophone research. Leading international scholars including Monika Fludernik, Richard Gerrig, Ansgar Nünning, John Pier, Brian Richardson, Alan Palmer, and Werner Wolf describe not only their newest research but also how this work dovetails with larger narratological developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the conventional understandings of literary naturalism defined primarily through its male writers, Donna M. Campbell examines the ways in which American women writers wrote naturalistic fiction and redefined its principles for their own purposes. Bitter Tastes looks at examples from Edith Wharton, Kate Chopin, Willa Cather, Ellen Glasgow, and others and positions their work within the naturalistic canon that arose near the turn of the twentieth century. Campbell further places these women writers in a broader context by tracing their relationship to early film, which, like naturalism, claimed the ability to represent elemental social truths through a documentary method. Women had a significant presence in early film and constituted 40 percent of scenario writers--in many cases they also served as directors and producers. Campbell explores the features of naturalism that assumed special prominence in women's writing and early film and how the work of these early naturalists diverged from that of their male counterparts in important ways.
